10:01 am
largest union joined the protests and calls and general strike. also coming up germany faces it's most disruptive strike action in 3 decades. public transport rail and airport staff nationwide are walking off the job to the man more paid to calendar of cost of living. crisis and controversy surrounds a visit by taiwan, former president, managing go to china. and the 1st time a former or sitting president has been to the mainland in 70 years. and his peers finding continues and eastern ukraine, existing graveyards across the country are being expanded for the growing number of more weight. ah, article freely it's good to have you with us israel,
10:02 am
if you are reporting that prime minister benjamin netanyahu is set to suspend controversial plans to overhaul the judiciary that's according to sources in his liquid party opposition to the plans escalated on sunday afternoon and yahoo! fired as defense minister for speaking out against the proposed reforms. israel has seen sustained protests since the overhaul was announced. months ago. the plan would allow parliament to override supreme court decisions. more on this, let's go straight to rebecca readers who's in jerusalem. rebecca, now ya has postponed his statement. is he going to address the nation today? that's right, nicole. we were expecting him around about 10 o'clock this morning that was postponed to 1030 and has been postponed. again. we can only assume that the talks that are going on behind the scenes are heated, that there is no consensus what we were expecting. and what was being widely reported from sources late from his own la code party was that benjamin netanyahu
10:03 am
was indeed going to bow to pressure the building pressure that's happening within the country to suspend the legislation or to put the suspend the vote on the legislation that was due to take place today we were hearing that he was going to make an announcement to say that that would indeed be what was happening. but as i said, this is keeps being postponed. so we can only imagine that there are fierce negotiations going on behind the scenes. we are starting to hear rumors, but i really hastened to add that these are all rumors. we have nothing confirmed that some members of one of the far right parties in the far in the coalition the make up the coalition is now leaning towards supporting a suspension and but definitely others other members of another far up party saying that they will not accept the suspension, we've got the ultra orthodox party saying that they would accept whatever benjamin netanyahu is going to go ahead. but nicole, what we're seeing in this country is unprecedented today was a nation wide,
10:04 am
a nationwide strike with the airport being shut down, affecting some 74000 passengers. all incoming and outgoing flights have been suspended. we've got hospital saying that they will strike as of tomorrow and only be available for emergency care if these reforms are not being suspended and either reforms or not being suspended. so really unprecedented action that come in the wake of last night's montana's protests in the straits across the country. so really some huge action and benjamin netanyahu really having to make some some decisions this morning to see what will happen. we were, we wait remains to be saying, what is going to happen? yeah, the pressure is definitely growing. will return to you rebecca, in a 2nd. but 1st, let's take a look at the latest developments that lead us here. ango in the streets of tel aviv. the protest is blocked a major highway that launched bonfires in
10:05 am
jerusalem. police used water cannon to disperse protesters outside the residence of prime minister benjamin netanyahu. weekly demonstrations against plans to over hold that additional system have been taking place across the country for nearly 3 months. oh, the latest protests of fueled by natania house dismissal of defense minister you off garland 1st member of government to suggest the reform should be halted. i mean, you more than more with i'm not sure. not sure, linda, we have no more the choice with these really government
10:06 am
wants to change the current system to allow parliament to override the decisions of the supreme court. the plan has divided the country far right parties. welcome the dismissal of garland, but opposition politicians. san antonio has crossed a red line on your mailbox law. these rail has never faced such popular pressure on the debate about its democratic institutions and our correspond and for becker writers is still with us joining us from jerusalem at this hour. rebecca, chaotic scene last night, massive protests over a week. now. how early israeli is going to react if netanyahu andy freeze is his controversial judicial reforms you thank well, we are expecting more protests today. but as we were just saying, you know, we are expecting also benjamin at yahoo to come out and potentially as suspend the
10:07 am
legislation, but it really remains to be seen. or it's a really huge question as to whether or not that would in fact satisfy the protest is even if he were to go ahead and suspend the legislation pools to that being pushed through the kinessa this week. whether or not that would really be enough to take people off the streets to get them to continue supporting the government. definitely, you know, as i mentioned, we're seeing those a lot of members with in the coalition saying that they will not accept a suspension. so exactly what would happen to the fragile increasingly fragile coalition. if he does make that move, is anybody's guess at this stage. we are of course seeing that the announcement by benjamin netanyahu is being postponed, no doubt, so that he can try and get more support from the people in the coalition who is saying they will not stand with him. so it's a huge day in israel to day, huge day in this country,
10:08 am
really an unprecedented level of protest and anger. and it's really any one's guess what will happen as this thing unfolds over the next hour, and in day days, tumultuous times in israel and d rebecca writers. andrew, so i'm thank you so much for breaking it all down for us airports and railway and bus stations. have shut down in germany's most disruptive strike action in 30 years . members of 2 of the biggest trade unions have walked off the job for 24 hours. they're demanding higher wages in the transport sector to combat the rising cost of living. for more i'm joined now by our reporters julia, so deli at berlin, central station and emily gord dean at frank for an airport. and start with you. emily. frankfurt airport is one of your of mean aviation hobbs, but it looks like there's not much going on today. her year
10:09 am
we're standing at the departure hall of front for the airport and it is pretty deserted. i must say. i've never seen it like this. and if you look at the board behind me, it's the departure board. every single flight has been cancelled. ironically it says year, year, year above it, above the will the constellations i don't think we're travellers are as and through the asked about this development an over 1000 flights have been canceled here. oh, oh, hundreds of thousands of passenger of, of travelers are affected by this m. this is of course, desire as is asked for many who are arriving back here in the travels that we have been able to speak to they be, they've been stranded here since last night. they've been sitting here for hours on end, or they have been arriving sort of through other regional small of airports and then and then have been taken here via bosses. adding are the 5 to 6 hours and travel time. but of course, this is not for nothing workers here are striking because they say the money that they're earning now is not enough to get by on. and keep in mind,
10:10 am
sensation has been ada record high across are not just germany, but europe really. and so these strikes are they were their way of putting pressure on the ongoing pay, negotiations and that so that's why they are happening at the moment. and julia, so daily is at berlin's very desert ed central station. can you tell us more about what's behind this strike? what exactly are the union's asking for? i was say, i had never seen the usually buzzing central station here in berlin this empty. and that really comes to show how strong the unions that have organized the strike to day are in germany and how much pressure they can really put on the negotiations. the, the 2 unions to big unions have come together today to call for this strike. and they are asking for quite a substantial salary increase for public transport workers across the country between 10 and 12 percent depending on which of the unions and that is because they
10:11 am
say workers are struggling to keep up with a rising inflation. as we've heard, record levels of inflation in germany, the highest level since world war 2, and especially hitting energy prices and food prices around 20 percent inflation for those 2 sectors. and people are really feeling the hit when they have to pay the bills when they have to go to the supermarket. and that's why, um, basically the country has been brought to a standstill today course, much of this related to the war in ukraine. emily, germany is not the only country thing these kinds of strikes lately as it none at all. we've been seeing strikes all across europe. really. i mean, if you look at the u. k. lower the ongoing national railway strikes have led to massive disruptions in transportation. the transportation sector and heathrow airport at heathrow, airport security guards, and the workers there are mulling whether to join them over the easter holiday am.
10:12 am
and then we, when we look at france, we saw that present my con, recently pushed through a quite a controversial bill that will raise the national retirement age. and that's, that's a huge demonstrations. and the labor unions that represent workers of also held math of strikes across the country even can charles has had to postpone his visit to france. and then when you look to, when you look to thing a lot of work, there have been a deadlock over a pay negotiations and they've been working out oh, on tuesdays or throughout march. and so it is an incredibly difficult situation across europe when it comes to the transportation sector, not only the transportation sector, but it just reflects on this why the sentiment of m this vis, or the struggle with inflation. so inflation has risen to record highs across europe, as i to said. and people are struggling to pay their bills. and so this is their way of putting pressure on the employer side to raise in flat, to raise wages. and so that they can actually, you know,
10:13 am
and deal with these price hikes in the future at julia here in germany, what's going to happen next? how likely that, that the demands of the unions will actually be accepted for the go. she, asians are ongoing and this is going to be the 3rd round of negotiations. and what the unions have said is that so far they have not received an offer that they are willing to upset accept, hence the strike today. but what we also have to consider is that the federal and a local authorities that are meant to agree to these salary increases are also strapped for cash. given again, the inflation, the rising price is and the extra cost that they have to sustain. so they are going to be difficult negotiations and what i think is that is going to be quite difficult that these high amounts 1012 percent raises are going to actually be agreed upon. thank you, julia so deleon, berlin,
10:14 am
and emily gordon and frankfort. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making headlines around the world today. me on mars military junta has been marking the armed forces day troops paraded through the capital 9 p. dod to commemorate the founding of the countries army during world war 2. the military seas power and imprisoned, elected officials following a coo and 2021. cleanup efforts are underway in the u. s. date of mississippi. after tornadoes destroyed several towns for the dan, joe biden has declared an emergency freeing up federal funding. lease 25 people were killed when the twisters flood neighbourhood down trees and power lines thousands of yemen. these have filled the streets of the rebel held capital sun on 2 mark, 8 years of the war against the saudi lead coalition. yemen has been entrenched in the civil war since 2014, resulting in one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. under the fire
10:15 am
fighters in eastern spain are battling the 1st major wildfire of the season, some 1700 people have been forced to flee their homes. the fire began on thursday and the still out of control. an unusually dry winter in southern europe has raised concerns about a repeat of last year's devastating fires. i was former president lodging. jo is kicking off a visit to china. the 1st such trip by a former leader there since 1949. ma says he will not meet with high ranking chinese officials and then his visit will be centered around piece of the visit has parked controversy and taiwan a territory that beijing views as its own. earlier we spoke to political scientist, ian chung from the national university of singapore, and asked him what b, what's behind my going jose visit in china? well, that's his claim. but being a hyperbolic political figure,
10:16 am
a former president, there will be a lot of political debate and attention centered on his visit and mine himself. while he has is not going to meet any high ranking chinese officials. he does want to engage in dialogue with students as he things in the p. c. now that, of course, for the sienna ccp is always going to be political, they see many things, in fact, all things as sort of having a political tinge to it. he says he hopes to bring about peace. there must be a political assigned to it. doesn't there mom trips. there is a huge controversy in taiwan. some are worried and my send the wrong message at the wrong time with your assessment. right, so the thing is with mind joe, he's been known to be very beijing friendly. and at this point in time what we have, what we are seeing is that beijing is adding a lot of military pressure from exercises. one putting pressure economy
10:17 am
economically on taiwan. and so there is concern that ma visit sends a signal of weakness or capitulation to the p. c. and but my post claims that it's 4 piece. so this sort of 2 sides of the debate really are creating the control oversee around this particular visit. this is a historic visit. why do you think he chose to go there and why do you think he chose to go there? now? she's been way. so mas official reason is that he's going to pay respects to his ancestors who come from 9 in china. now, i guess his move now is to show that he is still a influential political player. this comes at a time when the camp is trying to figure out their candidates for the presidential election. so i suppose my trying to even imprint that forces to the debate in taiwan to move towards some sort of conciliation toward building houses all being received by j fishing. and it's sort of awkward because they don't recognize the
10:18 am
government in time when they don't recognize mas presidential status. but yet i think they don't want to see, you know, over the sort of reject it. so they've allowed him to visit how they're going to handle this visit has remained a question. there's been questions over his security detail. so i suppose beijing is trying to handle it as smooth away as possible. but very, my vision also has other major visits at this point in time, the europeans are going the same for ins and malaysians also going for a while for so i think on the in china mas visit will probably not get very much of an airing. but most visit to china is very likely to overlap with the, with the taiwanese presidents with and sign. when's trip to the us? is that just a coincidence? so i think that there may be some reason why there's overlap, but it's not possible to know from the outside. so maybe mom wants to shift the focus away from tie. but all that is not completely known at this point is not

something that my stated out opened me and tell from the national university of singapore. thank you so much for those very interesting insight. thank you. u. s. vice president, pamela harris has said, washington plans to increase investment and helps for economic growth in africa. harris made the comments after arriving and gone us capital, our problem, our 1st stop on a week long visit to the continent, tories and deepening the u. s. they pull medic ties in africa and also counter china's influence their harrison. she would also be addressing issues like climate change and food security. after gone on, harris will travel to tanzania and san via our correspond n to i cyclists in accra told us more about the u. s. vice president trip. so in her speech, when she landed at equitable kinds mostly upon, she indicated that the u. s. is trying to, dipping this relation with africa because it's the africa as
