york city, as president biden met with voters in scranton, pennsylvania. a look at the failed efforts on how nebraska's electoral votes are counted, also. first, a look at the latest poll numbers and ads from the gop and democratic presumptive nominee. the latest from the economist as president biden and former president trump provide nationally. a poll released earlier in the week had president biden up 1% over former president trump. still, a statistical slide. better news for kennedy with 11% support area the most recent national poll released this week from emerson college shows former president trump with a slightly higher edge, up 44% to president biden's 40% with kennedy at 8%. next, two of the latest ads from the biden and trump camps, which
5:25 am
focus on campaign stops they made earlier in the week in and pennsylvania. then some highlights from candidate interactions with voters. scranton is a set of values. we pride ourselves on the importance of family. honesty and hard work. >> this was the beginning. president biden is my first cousin and there is pride in scranton. >> hard-working people. a lot of times, it goes way back before we were in grade school. >> scranton is a case study for what president biden has done since he has taken office. four years ago, we were
5:26 am
distressed. we are out of financial distress in the city. people are happier because they can find a job. we have construction all over the city. >> i have seen an increased number of new businesses open since the pandemic. for the first time in a long time, we have a president who understands more middle-class people like me. >> i do believe president trump was for the wealthy. that is what he protected. >> president biden is setting us up not just for tomorrow but for 50 years from now. we are so optimistic. we are the future of scranton and continuing to work going ahead the next four years. collects a hard-working store clerk here in new york read the clerk talked back. the da slapped him with the murder charge. >> former president trump is a dae dae bodega. >> people lined up. it was july of 2022. >> on tuesday, they use the bodega as a backdrop to slam the attorney for being when he says -- >> very much supported here in harlem. [indiscernible]
5:27 am
mr. trump: the association invited to me. they respect me. they have tremendous crime, where their stores are being robbed. as you know, we are going to give new york a good shot of the presidency. we think we should be able to do it. a lot of things have changed. he ran, he lost by a little bit, and he will work with the man,
5:28 am
he will work with the governor -- [indiscernible] these guys are great people, great friends, but there is tremendous crime and we have to straighten that out. >> more than 50% of people actually or the majority believe [indiscernible] mr. trump: i heard 78%. it is a rigged deal. it is a rigged trial. everything is screwed up in new york, and the whole world is watching. this judge is so conflicted. you understand that. take a look at that. there has never been a judge so conflicted. it's ridiculous. also, there is no crime. you know where the crime is? in the bodega's, where they rob them every week. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: anybody that is fair. i will let you know after. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: don't forget. we are appealing. if you take a look around, every
5:29 am
legal scholar, every legal pundit said there should be no trial. it was nothing done wrong. this is all politics coming out of the white house. it makes me campaign locally. [chanting] mr. trump: i think we are doing better at crime. i think we are doing better than we have ever done. you know what? all i would like is fairness, and these people have to be treated with fairness. every week, they are being robbed. it is crazy. you know what? the police can do it. they can stop it, but they have to be allowed to do their jobs. >> [indiscernible] >> give them hope to restore the
5:30 am
american dream. atlanta, new york, chicago. mr. trump: number one, you have to stop crime. we will let the police do their job. they have to be given back their authority and they have to be able to do their job. we are making a big play for new york. i love this city, and it has gotten so bad the last four years, and we are going to straighten new york out. so we think we can win new york. there are half a million migrants who poured in and they took over your hotels. they take over everything. and you know what they have done? they have been growing so many people. the african-american community is not getting jobs. migrants are taking their jobs. hispanics are not getting jobs. migrants are taking their jobs. if you look at the unemployment, it is good for migrants now.
5:31 am
and they are in our country. they are coming from prisons, mental institutions, prisons, they come from places you do not want to know about. they are coming from jails, resins, mental institutions, insane asylums, and you have massive numbers of terrorists coming into our country. this trial i have now, they would like to keep me off the campaign trail but what i'm doing, i think there's more press here. [indiscernible] the police have to be able to do their job. they half to be able to do their job. they half to protect these people. this young man has a son who looks like he is a movie star. he's better looking than the father. you know what? he says he's robbed all the time. look, beautiful place. he's robbed all the time.
5:32 am
alvin bragg says nothing. he goes after guys like trump who did nothing wrong. violent criminals and murderers. there are hundreds all over the city. they know who they are. they don't take them up through go after trump. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: what? >> how do you feel about the seven jurors selected today? mr. trump: i will let you know in two months. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: right now, we have to get the criminals because many people coming into our country are criminals and mental patients. we have to get them out. we will have the largest deportation in the history of our country. you know who needs that? new york. african-american, hispanic american, asian american, they are all losing. unions are losing.
5:33 am
>> [indiscernible] what is he doing here because he doesn't like the community. mr. trump: me? i love them and they love me. my numbers are the highest in the history of the republican party with the latinos. did you know that? and, frankly, the illegal immigrants, we have to do something because no country can sustain it. they are emptying out their prisons and men still -- mental institutions. these are people from mental institutions. >> you are in harlem, a different neighborhood. mr. trump: i think we are connecting already. i was invited here by the bodega association. they are getting robbed two or
5:34 am
three times a week. i think we are doing very well. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: the migrants had taken over new york, 500,000 illegal migrants in new york. the people of new york are not going to take it. >> [indiscernible] [yelling and screaming] >> the juror? mr. trump: i don't know. it is a little early. but the judge is so conflicted. there has never been anybody conflicted like this. all of that stuff is on appeal right now. it is all on appeal. and the whole world is watching this. this is all election interference at the highest level. it all comes out of washington
5:35 am
because you know they are losing very badly. they are losing badly in the polls, and i think you will see some numbers coming out now even higher. people do not like the persecution. they don't like what is going on. they don't like these big prosecutors. deranged jack smith. the whole group of them. i think you will see some big changes being made. you know what we are going to be doing, right? saving america. our country is under siege. take a look at israel. it does not feel protected. and biden does not know where he is. it is a real mess. we will see what happens with that. >> [indiscernible] mr. trump: thank you. [indiscernible]
5:36 am
[cheering and singing] [applause] [ chanting "u.s.a."] mr. trump: they come in with guns. that's not good. not the father of this movie star. forget about bodegas. you are going to be the next movie star. we are sending him to hollywood. goodbye, everybody. >> what are your plans for the
5:37 am
rest of the day in new york? [indiscernible] [indiscernible chanting] mr. trump: we are doing values all over the place. we have never had higher numbers than now. highest numbers we have ever had, and you know. you record them. [indiscernible]
5:38 am
pres. biden: i learned, nobody is looking for a handout. all anybody wants was a fair shot of making it. my dad had a saying, a job is more than a paycheck. it is about dignity, respect, looking at your kid in the eye and say, honey, it is going to be ok, and mean it. people like donald trump learn different lessons. he learned the best way to get rich's inheritance. not a bad way. he learned that paying taxes is something people worked for a living did, not him. he learned that telling people "you are fired" is something to laugh about. i guess that is how you look at the world in mar-a-lago. i don't see through the eyes of
5:39 am
mar-a-lago. i see it through the eyes of scranton. that is not hyperbole. that is a fact, were honesty and decency matters. scranton values or mar-a-lago values. these are the competing visions for our economy that raised questions of fundamental fairness of the campaign that i would like to talk to you about today. trickled economic failed in the middle class and america. the truth is, donald trump and bodies that failure. he would like to double down on trickled down. his failure starts with his $2 trillion tax cut were the overwhelming and if it is for wealthy corporations that exploded federal debt when he was president. he added more to the national debt than any president of the u.s. in term in all american history. meanwhile, when the pandemic hit , trump failed the most basic duty, a duty to care and respond.
5:40 am
remember when he told us, don't worry, this will be over by easter? remember when he told us, literally, inject bleach. bless me father. look -- [applause] pres. biden: only two presidents on record in all of american history left with fewer jobs than when entered, herbert hoover, and, yes, donald herbert hoover trump. you know, i have always delivered results in a fiscally responsible way, but i know not everyone is scaling it. just the other day, a guy came up and asked if i could help. he was drowning in debt. i said, i'm sorry, donald, but i can't help you. [laughter] [applause] nothing i can do. you know, if trump's stock in
5:41 am
his true social, his company, drops any lower, he might do better. folks, he is coming for your money, your health care, and your social security, and we are not going to let it happen. we are not going to -- cannot let it happen. donald trump looks at the world differently than you and me. he wakes up at mar-a-lago thinking about himself. how he can help his billionaire friends gain power and control. listen to what he says. he says "i will be dictator on day one. folks, on your retribution." he promises, "a bloodbath" if he loses. this guy denies january 6. listen. listen to what he says because you know he means it. i wake every morning thinking
5:42 am
about how to make life better like you do for working-class families here in scranton and across the country, where the power and freedom rests with you and we the people. maybe that is why millions of everyday folks are powering our campaign. so far, 1.6 million people contributed to our campaign, 550,000 brand-new this time around, and they are new contributors. that's what? 97 percent of these contributions are under it matters. you matter. >> president biden's visit to his hometown of scranton, pennsyan, was one-stop he made in the keystone state this week. in philadelphia on thursday, he was joined by mbe of the kennedy family, including cary kennedy, the sister of presidenti candidate robert s
5:43 am
kennedy junior, running against president biden. next, some of her endorsement of president biden's campaign. >> we would like to make crystal clear our feelings that the best way forward for america is to reelect joe biden and, harris took four more years. four more years. four more years. four more years. four more years. [chanting] president biden has been a champion for all the rights and freedoms my father and uncle stood for. that is why nearly every single grandchild of joe and lois kennedy supports joe biden.
5:44 am
that is right. that is right. the kennedy family endorses joe biden for president. when daddy announced his bid for the presidency in 1968, he talked about the course our country would take under the wrong leadership, and he said, i feel obliged to do all that i can. i cannot stand aside. we are here because we feel obliged to do all that we can. we cannot stand aside. in this election, no american can stand aside. we must vote. in 2024, there are only two candidates with any chance of winning the presidency.
5:45 am
we know them well. four years ago, our country was crippled by covid, ks, and unprincipled leadership. trump proudly right about overturning roe v. wade, rolling back the clock 50 years to win women could not make our own health care decisions. president biden is planning to get our freedoms back. >> meanwhile, the independent candidate has continued his quest to contain -- maintain ballot access across the country. he gained access in michigan, and reports say that he has proven a debt at petitions to get on ballots. next, local coverage in iowa about a recent signature drive the candidate himself joined in the state capital. >> robert f kennedy junior held
5:46 am
an assembly with the goal of making it onto the states ballot. i candidate can achieve ballot access by having 500 eligible voters attend an assembly and sign a form of testing that they were president. he completed the ballot requirements. rfk junior weighed in on what he thinks makes him stand out from the crowd. >> people want a candidate they believe in, that they think is going to change some of the downward trends of our country. i don't think either of those candidates authors that. >> during a speech at the event, rfk told voters he did not want them to feel ripped off or tricked, and their vote was going to the person they wanted to vote for. >> nebraska is one of two states
5:47 am
in the country that picks electors based on districts, and here to talk about that effort to change that is a reporter and producer with nebraska public media news. first, what is the status of the legislation proposed and what is it? >> the legislation proposed would revert to the winner take all system used in the 48 other states. the status of it is it is nowhere. there is one day left in the session. they have big decisions left on taxes and schools, so, it is not even out of committee. so chances that anything will happen with it this year or session are virtually nil. >> who are the forces behind the efforts to change nebraska to winner take all? >> it is a perpetual proposal by republicans in the officially
5:48 am
nonpartisan legislator that ever since the system was adopted in the early 1990's, so it has come up alterable times to attempts to repeal it. this year, it seems to have gotten -- it was languishing in committee, but it seems to have gotten a boost with charlie kirk making a deal of it, and donald trump endorsing the proposal to change it back to winner take all, but all that happened so late in the legislative session when people had other fish to fry, so it did not go anywhere. >> we are really focused on the second congressional district around omaha. how many times did the district even split off? >> twice, 2008 they gave a vote to barack obama, and in 2020, they gave a vote to joe biden.
5:49 am
trump carried nebraska as a whole by 19% in 2020, but i didn't carried the area district in omaha by seven percentage points, so you got an of nebraska's five electoral votes. >> are there any signs that this will be a situation in the 2024 election? >> it could be. it will depend on other factors. there are abortion measures on the ballot. it all depends on turnout and voter sentiment. >> for those of us unfamiliar with nebraska's political landscape, what is it about the second congressional district that makes it a more purple district and the rest of the state? >> it is by far the most urbanized district in the state.
5:50 am
it contains omaha, a few suburbs, whereas the rest of the state's largely agricultural. the first district, which includes lincoln, which is city itself intends to vote democratic, but it is included in a congressional district that is overwhelmingly republican, so it's electoral vote has never switched. and the third district, which is huge, most of the state, is very solidly republican. >> was the governor involved in the efforts for winner takes all customer -- winner takes all? >> that's interesting. he came out with a statement that says, sure, i will support winner take all, and i will be happy to call a special session
5:51 am
or two to change to that system, once there are sufficient votes -- votes to do that. nebraska has the smallest legislature in the country, one house, 49 members, and it takes 33 to overcome a filibuster, and while it is officially not in person, there are 33 registered republicans, but they don't all support changing from winner take all, and the latest convert , a former pro-life democrat who just became republican, said he still is opposed to winner take all. so they don't have the 33 yet. the governor also had an interesting comment in addition, saying he was not into google politics. -- gruber politics. i said, what's that? he said, it was making decisions
5:52 am
solely for political reasons. he said nobody on the campaign trail, nobody had ever asked him about this issue. >> reporter and producer announcer: this program and all of c-span's campaign to 24
