and back in those days we had a big steelworkers. we had a lot of steelworkers from delaware where i was from because they worked in the steel company. i'll never forget coming to me and saying we are going to get your help. it came out to pittsburgh and the steelworkers endorse me. and it changed everything. [applause] nixon one of myed state of delaware with 60% of the boat too. i want with an astounding 3100 majority. it is thanks to you, i mean it. i really mean it might love for pittsburgh from black and white scranton days my grandfather talked about pittsburgh. anyway, it's make a long story short the bottom line and i am a present because of you guys. i really am. i'm proud, as it's mentioned niearlier proud to be the most o union president of the union.

[applause] and is still working as a steelworker. but that is america look folks, of psalms exactly five years ago we began it might campaign for president right here in pittsburgh where i announce. one of the reasons i was to rebuild the backbone of the american middle class it's gnalready mentioned is meant mentioned a thousand times the backbone of america has a steel spine. it really does have a steel spine. you have heardti me say it befoe wall street did not built america, the middle class and not biddle america you guys built theet middle class, unions that's why i'm here today to announce a series of actions that i stand by you, the american steelworker. look, first u.s. steel has been iconic american company for more than a century. it should remain totally american country.

[applause] america own, american operatedom by american union steelworkers, the best in the world that's going to happen, i promise you. second, america steelworker can outwork and outcompete as long as a fair competition. but for too longve the chinese governmentus has poured statemet into chinese steel companies pushing them to make so much steel, as much as possible subsidized by the chinese government because chinese produce more steel than china needs they end up dumping the extra steel of the global market at unfairly low prices. the prices are unfairly low because chinan' don't need to about making profit. government subsidizes so heavily but they're not competing they are cheating. we have seen the damage here in america. back in the early 2000's chinese steel began flooding the market in the steel towns all across pennsylvania and ohio. they did it very hard for

between this years 2000 -- 2010 more than 14000 steelworkers lost their jobs. 14000. let me ask you, are we going to let that happen again? i promise you i am not going to let that happen again. look, right now u.s. trade representative is investigating trade practice by the chinese government regarding steel and aluminum. we confirm anti- competitor trade practices call on and consider the entire for deal. and aluminum. still imported through mexico. just yesterday had a delegation down in mexico meeting with the mexican president to address this issue. mexico the unitedg states will live together to solve this i promise you, i promise you my administration take a hard look at chinese government industrial practices when it s comes to global shipbuilding which is critical to our economy.

we depend out a fleet of commercial shipping vessels to carry american products arounddi the world but shipbuilding is critical to our national security clean the strength of the united states navy. that is why my administration takes a veryu. serious look at u.s. steel workers along with four other unions have asked us to investigate whether the chinese government is using anticompetitive practices to artificially lower prices inbu e shipbuilding industry. we have heard you. the chinese in government is doing that, under unfair trade i will take action. i've investigations going on. taken together these are strategic and targeted actions w that are going to protect the american workers and ensure a fair competition. meanwhile my predecessor in the maga republicans want to cross aboard tariffs on all imports from all countries that could badly hurt american consumers. it is estimate costs the american family an average of $1500 year if they succeed in

doing that. trump simply does not get it. for years i have heard many of my republicans even democratic friends say china is on the rise in america is falling behind. you may have noticeded last two years i've been the only one disagreeing with that. i've always believe we've got it all wrong. america is rising with the best economy which wet do. wosince i have come to office gp is up, trade deficit with china is down the lowestwe level in or a decade were standing up against chinese government on economic practice in industrial capacity.ap where the strongest economy in the world. in addition, by the way try to hit scott -- i always say to my colleagues wouldn't meet other world leaders i say would you trade places with china? would you trade places they have got a population more people in retirement than working.

the world. anywhere in the world. we did not get anyone to vote for it, my democratic friends. industries in the future including clean american steel. it's clean because what we produce it here much less carbon and silt made in china. largest investment ever wrote to reclaim manufacturing and american history. history.f the $1.5 billion and six clean steel projects across america. $1.5 billion. it's going to support thousands of union jobs including at beutler works and pennsylvania. my predecessor and his republican friends in congress want to repeal thatre law. that would cut those jobs in cap the jobs. ie am serious. i know when i say these things you wonder could they possibly be that stupid?

i promise i have yours. we made that happen while my predecessor never lifted a finger to help but i also increase federal minimum wage or federal contracts people are pointed to the labor board actually care about american workers. so far we have created 15 million as mentioned earlier, new jobs on a record. [applause] 492,000 new jobs so far in pennsylvania alone. [applause] under my predecessor, who is busy right now. [laughter] pennsylvania lost 275,000 jobs. just look at the facts of her on my watch unemployment has not been this low for this long and 50 years. in 50 years. wages are rising.

credit close 800,000 new manufacturing jobs including 28000 right here in pennsylvania. we retracted $680 billion but let me say it again $680 billion private sector investment and advanced manufacturing clean energy here in america including $4 billion just here in the state of pennsylvania sor. far. folks, you are exploiting american jobss. but we are exploiting products and creating american jobs. think of last year's corporate america want to find the cheapest labor in the world. sending jobs overseas and import the product home. not anymore. together we do what has always worked best for this country we are investing in all of america. were building an economy from the middle up in a bottom out not top-down what we do that the poor have a ladder up in the

middle class do wellin the still wealthy still do very well. we allll do. no, for real. [applause] look, let me close with this i came for my home town of scranton, pennsylvania place like pittsburgh climbs into your heart and never leaves you and it really doesn't. my mom didn't live in scranton since 1954 u.s., where she's from she says scranton, scranton. we learned a basic value set like you do here. money does not determine your worth is what i've always been told that everyone is entitled to reach with dignity and respect. my dad used to saypa the job is about lot more than a paycheck. it is about your dignity. start respecting and being treated with respect. i give my outward leisure word s he always used. he would say it not only being able too have look you in the ee and say hi, it's going to be okay and mean it, mean it.

look, everyone, everyone deserves a fair shot. just a fair shot. we are going to leave no one behind for that folks, that's my view of the account from scranton, pittsburgh from thousands of middle-class working neighbors all across the country. it is a future where building together. as i said i always think of my dad. i really mean it. my dad during the war did not get to go to college as they say in baltimore he was in baltimore and hise. father moved to wilmington and into scranton and openeded up the station. he always would come home and go back and close the business she did not own it, he managed the dealership to the job is a lot more than a paycheck. and it really is. it's about treating people with dignity. it's about treating them with respect. it's going to be okay. it's going to be okay folks.

writing a book about reflection points in american history were actions we take in the short period of time determine what's happens the next five or six decades. that's one of the places we are at right now. when those folks came walking out down in charlottesville, virginia carrying nazi banners saying the same garbage they sang with hitler and the streets carrying torches and a young woman wasat killed. i decided i had to run. i had to run. our democracy is at stake. and it really is but you know what change is it? when you make the economy grow. when we stand up and ordinarysc people have an even shot they are not at all susceptible of the garbage for these guys. it's supposed to stop but should not keep growing.

folks look, look, we've got to remember who we are. and i can't, well, when i left scranton today i wanted to go to war memorial that has the names of all of these grandsons who had died in world war ii etched in a granite wall. i want to see my uncle or his name was etched. back when d-day occurred on sunday, the next day my mother's four brothers went down to the extension enjoyed the military. every one of them volunteered. and my uncle was an athlete. he became army air corps. he go see the legend planes
