Senate Republicans Hold News Conference  CSPAN  October 1, 2020 12:57am-1:12am EDT

12:57 am
his conference would like to pass another coronavirus relief bill but the house proposal was still too high. leader mcconnell was asked about the president's statement in the debate when asked to condemn white supremacists. this is about 15 minutes.
12:58 am
>> good afternoon, everyone. as you know we've begun the process of advising and consenting to the president's nomination for the supreme court, judge barrett has been meeting with republican senators, and i think several democrats have agreed to see her as well. this is the visitation process consistent with past nominations. lindsay graham has laid out a schedule for processing a nomination and the committee and we will proceed with the nomination once it comes out of the committee. everybody's been saying it but this is an extraordinarily impressive woman with an outstanding academic record, strict constructionist who believes in applying the

constitution and law as they are written and well deserves to be on the supreme court. >> last week a lot of democrats and i know others were objecting to were talking about the process, but i think the question about the historical precedent for this should be settled by now. this is very different circumstances as we pointed out than 2016. but right now the focus is going to be on the nominee and the qualities she brings to the job. as the leader pointed out, she's extremely qualified not only in her academic resume, but in her experience and background. i think if you look at the cases that she has heard and been involved in since she has been in the circuit, she's demonstrated a really very acute legal mind, but also the kind of restraint that most of us want to see in a judge. someone who will call balls and

strikes, apply the laws of the constitution as written. and that's the kind of judicial temperament and philosophy that i think we have seen in her already, and i think she's going to impress everybody that she comes into contact with through this nomination process. i hope the one thing that they will leave alone are her face and family. those attacks are beneath and something that nobody ought to tolerate for any nominee. and i hope that she will certainly as people evaluate her they will do it on her record and accomplishments and qualifications and not that. ...
1:01 am
>> and then it won't come without a price. so we are paired to be here and do whatever it takes to get the nominee across the finish line. >> the democrats truly have become unhinged of the supreme court of the united states. that it was bad when chuck schumer was outside of the supreme court building yelling at the building go search and kavanaugh you will the price. but it went a lot further this last week and when the president nominated amy coney barrett to the supreme court.
1:02 am
and that everything believes a sense for she believes in god a practices her faith. and is committed to family most americans are as well. she believes in life liberty and the pursuit of happiness and most americans do as well. >> and kids are in the crosshairs in the liberal left is attacking her children specifically the two she adopted from haiti. but then with a different than that and said with their it on the court you will never never be able to get insurance. and her health will suffer dramatically. high drama indeed.
1:03 am
not just scare tactics by theatrics that clearly also fear mongering. once again chuck schumer is pulling out the playback of one - - the playbook of personal destruction you once again going down the road of attacking personal nominees to the court. joe biden to this as chairman of judiciary committee he did against justice thomas as well as justice alito. he would have thought the democrats would have learned their lesson after the debacle of kavanaugh and that hearing. but about that episode continues to be a black cloud over their heads they lost senate seats as a result. amy coney barrett is an exceptional nobody into a terrific job on the court.
1:04 am
she will be a model for many. look at the nominee. she is somebody ready to apply the law, legislate from the bench she was flooded in a bipartisan vote to a lower court. she deserves a dignified and respectable hearing. >> let me just of the president made an outstanding choice with indiana's own judge amy coney barrett as a nominee to serve as associate justice to the supreme court of the united states. we got to know amy through the seventh circuit court of appeals nomination process. a person of great integrity sharp intellect and a strong work ethic even with good humor.
1:05 am
will need to prepare for that to make this anything but to serve on the highest court of the land. instead of the world try to scare americans those with pre-existing conditions. this is a mother of seven children and one has special needs. of course amy coney barrett cares about healthcare. they will try to make this about the faith as they did in the seventh circuit nomination battle. if she takes her catholicism to seriously for some of my colleagues, that is their problem. that says more about their on - - that institution than the supreme court of the united states. there is no religious test for high office in this country.
1:06 am
once again to go down that fictitious mode that the process is a legitimate although firmly grounded in historical precedents with the president of the united states senate to the same party end of the course of the election your i will unapologetically and enthusiastically and ardently fight that amy coney barrett gets a fair hearing and a look forward to moving forward with this process without delay. >>. >> all of those that have been here today. and then you criticize policies. but now they will lay off people at disneyland.
1:07 am
what does that look like? >> i have made it clear my colleagues as well would like to see another rescue package. we had a vote with coverage for existing conditions a few weeks ago. every single democrat prevented us from moving forward with that will presumably they thought it didn't do enough. so we see from the speaker is another massive measure that includes such things as health care for illegal immigrants and tax cuts for rich people and other things that are totally unrelated to the coronavirus.
1:08 am
i think the secretary and the speaker will continue to speak but we are very very far apart. >> you don't have anything to add beyond what i just said. >>. >> yes it is too high. we had 52 out of 53 republicans willing to spend roughly half a trillion dollars highly targeted to replenish the program and liability protection with everyone with the coronavirus msu grossly negligent were
1:09 am
engaging in intentional misbehavior. the thought senate republicans will go up at two.2 trillion and is outlandish. >> incentive problems with white supremacy and is that problematic for independent women. >> it was not lincoln douglas with a debate and second with regard to the ways to see issue i want to associate with myself remarks of senator tim scott heap earlier today i think he said it exactly correctly and that's how i would express myself on that issue. >> can you explain what to whom scott said? >> he said it was unacceptable
1:10 am
not to condemn white supremacist so why do so in the strongest possible way. >> but on the national stage was that appropriate? >> i think it is answer the question. >> with the ballot with the presidents to be performance last night? >> i don't know any of my colleagues who have problems as a result of that. >> we will clear it sometime tonight. thank you
1:11 am
>> good afternoon everyone. thank you for coming and socially distancing joining us for a few minutes. we just want to express our support for our supreme court nominee amy coney barrett and we had the opportunity to be at the white house on saturday to participate in this announcement
