7:00 am
her uncle's unhappy. i'm sensing an underlying issue. it's t-mobile. it started when we tried to get him under a new plan. but they they unexpectedly unraveled their “price lock” guarantee. which has made him, a bit... unruly. you called yourself the “un-carrier”. you sing about “price lock” on those commercials. “the price lock, the price lock...” so, if you could change the price, change the name! it's not a lock, i know a lock. so how can we undo the damage? we could all unsubscribe and switch to xfinity. their connection is unreal. and we could all un-experience this whole session. okay, that's uncalled for. direct redefining insurance >> we sent you to america so you could be on there's treachery within our thanks >> maybe there is no spy >> only the spices, there's no spy >> you will communist sympathizer sure. simon
7:01 am
>> good >> morning. you were alive in the >> cnn newsroom >> for >> president donald trump, >> who says his people for quote, get extremely angry with what's happening that's ahead of fun day. when for the first time in history of former american president will stand criminal trials. trump is accused of trying to buy the silence of a porn star, stormy daniels. he allegedly had an affair with trump denies the claims and has tried to delay the proceedings time and again just days left. that tried and true or somewhat true strategy is running out of runway earlier this week, his last-ditch effort to delay failed for the third time in three days this morning, we should note the us secret service says it is ready to go to provide protection for the former president, adding that it will quote, not seek any special accommodation outside
7:02 am
of what would be required to ensure the continued safety of the former president. meantime, trump is on a truth social tirade railing against the case. the judge and the entire system of justice in this country crying which on and spewing lies about president biden's alleged involvement unproven involvement on involvement in the prosecution. obviously, that is not true. joining me now on all of this and legal analyst and former obama white house ethics czar norm eyes and he's also the author of the new book you need to check it out, trying trump a guide to his first election interference, criminal trial and norm that sums up your feelings on this case? created a handbook for this trial walk us through it because the canard that you hear out there is that well, this one is just not that important. it's not as important as january 6. and so this is an important trial >> and there could >> be very big consequences for the former president. >> that, that's true gym and that's why i wrote trying can
7:03 am
trump to give both sides of the question, is this just a personal piccadilly as trump i think will argue his defense case just an affair and they wrote some wrong words down on some papers. they called it legal fees. instead of repayment of funds to michael cohen or is this a case as judge martian is going to read to the jury when they come in >> this is new >> york law. he is going to say the allegations are that donald trump entered an agreement with others to quote, unlawfully influence the 2016 presidential elections. so the stakes in this debate, and i fully ventilate trump side of the story in the book and the trial will be about which of these two visions is right? but the stakes in this debate are was this pattern of actions where
7:04 am
$130,000 benefited to trump campaign allegedly in an election that was decided by 80,000 votes across three states. another sex scandal was hidden right after access hollywood swung that election. that pattern of deceiving voters to change an election outcome. of course that's the same pattern as the jack smith case in 2020 is the fani willis case in 2020 that's alvin bragg's view that this is an important campaign election and democracy case. >> and i do want to mentioned because trump, trump has been very vocal on the truth social platform. he has made some comments that i think are disturbing. let's listen to what he had to say >> i was recently informed that another corrupt or new york judge juan merchan gagged me. that's gagged. like you can't talk these cases are all rig it sounds fair, doesn't it? to be gagged, but it's not it virtually never happens. it
7:05 am
only happens to me because i'm able so to tell people what's happening at those people get extremely angry with what's happening. this judge, should be recused and the case should be thrown out. he's totally conflicted. there's never been a judge more conflicted than this one. >> he keeps going after the judge's calling them conflicted and so on. but there's that moment in that video that we play right there. we don't play all of his truth social tirades. but when he talks about his people getting extremely angry, yes. sounds like a veiled threat once again, remember 2020 january 6, he tweeted will be wild >> and then >> the words on the ellipse that are charged as incitement >> in >> the er january 6 case, although in a different form, he's not charged with insurrection. he's charged with again, just like the 20-6 2016
7:06 am
case, a conspiracy to unlawfully influence the election. and of course, innocent until proven guilty. but jim, in that context, with the repeated history of his work hordes leading to risk and danger and violence. that's why this gag order is in place, contrary to what he said, it's not unusual. and when he says is people get angry, that should be a flashing red light. >> well, and that's why i wonder heading into monday, what is trump going to try to do to derail this? i mean i suppose the last one of the last things that he could possibly do is try to provoke the judge to the extent that he had the judge has to take action that could that potentially interfere with the proceedings? >> i don't think judge marcia is going to let it i counted and many of these are documented in expecting in trying trump. i counted his delay efforts 11 efforts to delay this trial, three more
7:07 am
this week alone on venue on ciao suing the judge over the gag order suing the judge over for presidential immunity, which really makes no sense. it has no place in this case. he's desperate he'll try more, undoubtedly next week. i don't think it's going to work. and the question we have to ask ourselves and again, the book is a deep dive in deep dive into this both sides of this question. jim why is trump so frantically fighting this case? if it is as some say, the least important are just merely a personal dello. he knows that these are serious felonies. he knows if he is convicted, if alvin bragg makes the case to the jury, but to the court of public companion, if he's convicted of election interference here, bragg proves that case. he's facing not only the harm of a conviction, but a possible sentence of jail time that would be devastating.
7:08 am
that's why he's trying to delay the polls have shown if there is a conviction, it could really have an impact on this ridge normal hi, isn't as always, thanks so much. make sure to check out north book really appreciate it also happening today. house speaker mike johnson will join donald trump for a joint news conference at mar-a-lago later today about the upcoming presidential election. the two republican leaders are set to talk about, quote, election integrity. despite the fact that trump's own administration officials will remind you the previous presidential election was the most secure in american history and to add some context, johnson was a key congressional figure in trump's failed effort to overturn president biden's victory in 2020. cnn's kristen holmes joins us now from west palm beach, florida, this should be quite a show. kristen, what do we know about this news conference? >> well, i we're heard those are going to talk about two things. one thing is that they are expected to re-litigate the 2020 election, which isn't that surprising since both of them tried to overturn that election, johnson was actually key behind the scenes, trying to get these congressional signatures on a lawsuit and
7:09 am
texas that would have tried to overturn the election in various the a but the other big thing that they're going to be talking about is this idea of non-citizens voting. there's been a conversation about whether they're going to present some kind of bill, but we know that they're going to put unquote draw attention to this issue. now, i want to be very clear. gym. there is currently a federal ban on noncitizens since voting in federal elections. so that is a non-issue, but we'll see republicans really use this as a rallying cry starting with the former president himself. he's actually gone as far to say that democrats want undocumented citizens coming across the border to help them in the 2024 election. obviously, there is no evidence since of that at all. now, one thing i do want to make clear here is that there are some states in which various cities have moved forward on passing legislation that would allow noncitizens to vote. in particular, local elections, again, not federal elections, which is what these two men
7:10 am
deal with. but in local elections, like a school board election. but now what you're saying is various states coming forward and putting forward these laws that say noncitizens can vote, cannot vote in elections. so this again has become a rallying cry, particularly as immigration has risen to a top concern of voters in 2024 and christian sources say that this event was johnson's idea. i mean, i suppose it comes at a time when there are all these questions about whether he can hang on to the speaker's gavel >> and one of the things to keep in mind here is donald trump has not come out to support dodson, but he's also knocking out to support marjorie taylor bleed his motion to vacate. it seems unlikely that he wants to get involved on either side because i'm told by sources he doesn't want another speaker's fight, but he also was very close to marjorie taylor greene. so this is an opportunity for johnson to stand alongside donald trump at his home at mar-a-lago talking about something the donald trump wants to talk about, which is elections. >> this is giving
7:11 am
>> him a boost at a time where he really needs it. >> all right. kristen holmes, thank you very much to the question. one of the big questions this morning, hangover. what's gonna be happening at mar-a-lago is how far will speaker johnson push election missing or misinformation at that appearance with the forefront president, this afternoon, a reminder back in 2020, then congressman johnson sent an email to every house republican pushing them to support a sham lawsuit that sought to invalidate electoral votes in key battleground states and in the run-up to the insurrection on january 6, he spewed misinformation about the election time and time again, telling an astonishing number of lives that have been repeatedly, then debunked >> the allegations about these voting machines and some of them being rigueur with this software by dominion. but there's a lot of merit to that. when the president says the election is rigged, that's what please talking about, did it with the fix was in when you have a software system that is used all around the country that is suspect because it came from hugo chavez has been
7:12 am
azuela fit in georgia. it really was rig it was set up for the biden team to win. the system is set up for massive fraud >> of course the hugo chavez that all of that that he just said, none of that is true. let's discuss with cnn political commentator scott jennings and larry saboteur, the director of the center for politics at the university of virginia, is also author of the book return to normalcy, the 2020 election that almost broke america larry, i mean, it's kind of remarkable to go back and listen to that audio and contemplate the fact that mike johnson is now the speaker of the house of representatives. what do you make of this event that's taking place at mar-a-lago later today and it sounds as though both trump and johnson will continue to push these election lies yes, they'll continue to push them because they've gotten away with them for years now. it's really is a big lie and it's not surprising at all that
7:13 am
donald trump would continue to do this. what is at least mildly surprising is that mike johnson, who wasn't speaker and he pushed this hard in november of 2020 and beyond. now, is speaker. he's actually in line to be president after the vice-president. and i have a hard time even uttering the words, election integrity without laughing derisively because it is a made up joke. that's all it is. the degree of fron and us elections is infinitesimal what johnson and trump and all their allies have done is to dramatically increase cynicism in the electorate especially the republican electorate that is to be deplored by everybody i think i would hope >> yeah, scott, what do you think >> well, obviously the things that were said about dominion are not true and that's being litigated in civil cases the
7:14 am
dominion's great benefit. i might add, they've obviously i've gotten satisfaction, pay off >> yeah >> yeah. >> absolutely. i mean, really look at the political question of all this is what's this election going to be about? and when you think about what is on the minds of the american people versus what's on donald trump's mine 80% of the time. that's the question he has to answer through here. are we going to talk about the things like inflation and immigration and crime, et cetera. are we going to relitigate these 2020 claims? is that going to be the centerpiece of a platform for president or are we going to talk about the broader issues that really he's on pretty firm ground in doing. so. >> i think that's really the push and pull that that's >> going on here as a political matter. what are the american people need to hear to return you to the white house when you've got a pretty weak incumbent, you're running against >> yeah. i mean, i do think it's a challenge for trump politically speaking, if he's just going to sound like a wind-up election dall election lied dog action figure i mean,
7:15 am
i just again, i know we've talked about this so many times. how does this help him in the suburbs of philadelphia? how does this help him in the suburbs of atlanta and phoenix and detroit? larry to me, i just don't understand how the election math adds up for donald trump. if he continues to do this. >> well, he's stirring up, his base. he's trying to get a maximum turnout from them. but your point is well taken and what scott just said is absolutely correct. if trump is going to be reelected, it's going to be on inflation chun and the border and some other issues although i think inflation and the border are the two key ones. but he spends his time and energy talking about a justification for what he's already done, deep down, or maybe right on the surface, he knows he's lied all along there is nothing there, but he refuses to admit that he lost he lost by over 7 million votes. and so the republicans have saddled themselves with a
7:16 am
nominee who can't distinguish between the issues that could win him another term and issues that will have no impact whatsoever beyond his base, who are already for him yeah. >> and scott, i mean, vice president kamala harris is an arizona today to campaign on women's reproductive rights. she's expected to blame trump for that near-total ban in arizona that dates back to before arizona was even a state how. big of a moment is this for the vice president does sound it. i mean, she is sort of the dobbs point person now for all, there has been criticism for kamala harris on the republican side, obviously, even inside the democratic party, when is she going to be more? sorted out in force for the democratic ticket? and it sounds like they've found the issue for her to campaign on be out in front on >> well, i mean, i expect all democrats, harris, senate candidates, even joe biden to be spending most of their time on this topic, they need this election to be about something
7:17 am
other than inflation. and the border. so they're going to pick a topic on which they think they have more credibility with the american people. you've seen the arizona supreme court give them an opening to do that. so it's not surprising to see them take advantage of that and i suspect they're gonna do it for the rest of the year. if this if the number one issue on the minds of the american people is inflation and food prices on election day they're in real trouble if they can muddy those waters and get them thinking about other issues such as abortion. and they have a fighting chance here. but that's the gambit for them is to try to stave off these tier one concerns and elevate things like abortion to top of the national conversation yeah. >> and larry, i know you've looked at this is part of what you do at uva. you you put out the crystal ball, you look at the election map, not just for the presidential race for senate races, congressional races, gubernatorial races, how much has dobbs? and it almost seems like every week there's another state that has a very draconian abortion law that is
7:18 am
coming to the fold because of the way roe came crashing down. for example, kari lake i don't know if you've seen this is lobbying arizona lawmakers to overturn that abortion ban in that state where she wants called a quote, great law here's how she is echoed. trump's abortion rhetoric in recent days, which trump of course has been all over the place on it. let's listen in to this total ban on abortion that the arizona supreme court just ruled on, is out of line. >> you must follow you the heart of this issue. i agree with president trump. this is such a personal and private issue, but i'm strongly in favor of exceptions for rape, incest, and life of the mother. >> i agree with president trump. we must have exceptions for rape, incest in the life of the mother. >> both sides wanted and in fact demanded be ended roe v. wade, they wanted it ended.
7:19 am
>> both sides of the issue admitted was unconstitutional as your senator, i will oppose federal funding for abortion and federal banning abortion it's incredible, larry. i mean, it's almost as though she's not really running for the synergies aiming to be as vice president >> i'm sure she'd like to be, but she lost the governorship in 2022. it was a governorship. republicans could easily have one with a more centrist candidate. and of course he's running for the us senate now, and she's doing it as a trump acolytes. she didn't banking on the chances that trump would probably carry arizona this time. he didn't need to swing many votes but abortion has intervened. reproductive rights and energy and if anything, i'd say, i've that the arizona is now leaning democratic votes in the senate race with congress. goodman,
7:20 am
diego, but also presidentially because of the abortion issue. now seven months is a long time. we'll have to see what what means, but abortion, reproductive rights is going to help them a crafts all across the country that why they're gonna be thousand of these jr.'s stories that arise, not just from swing states, but from these hardcore deep red states that have passed virtual bands on abortion, you can see it coming and it outrageous both men and women, but particularly women, particularly suburban women, who are swing voters and who can reelect, biden and scott can trump win the election if he loses arizona >> sure. i mean >> you put together some configuration of states. of course it gets a lot easier when you start recalling states that you nearly lost before. and as larry said, it doesn't take that many votes to swing it. i actually think trump is slightly ahead and arizona right now, like he is in most of the swing states and it's
7:21 am
not on anything other than the back of lack of confidence in biden and inflation. now, can abortion find its way up the chain here and convince people to overlook their concerns about biden is agent as policies that's the seven-month question that the algebra that the biden campaign's trying to do and the algebra the trump campaign is trying to do is can we keep the election focused on these other issues? and continue to cut a peel away from this non white working class that used to be a core the democratic party. it now seems to be leaking towards the republican party party. it's like two ships passing in the night. they're not really talking to each other, but they are talking to group of people who may be open to shifting parties under the sand. >> yeah. i mean, if you look at ohio, kansas, wisconsin, virginia, and a lot of these states people were voting on abortion. i mean, it was just remarkable to see. all right. larry scott hi. guys. thank you very much. still come this morning. a test of speaker johnson's leadership up on capitol hill after an

7:27 am
from terror attacks. the law allows us mr. collected communications of non-americans overseas without a warrant. it's due to expire a week from now, cnn's lauren fox is up on capitol hill for us. lauren, what's the latest >> yeah, so just a few minutes ago, house were able to pass that rule that 48 hours ago was a major stumbling block for the house speaker. they made a significant change in this legislation in that it now reauthorize is the foreign intelligence surveillance act for two years rather than five years. that was a major victory for some hardliners who are looking at the november election, optimistic that former president donald trump could win again be in the white house and then be in a position to make additional changes to this legislation. going forward. now, this procedural cool actually passed on the floor. the next question, of course, will underlying bill passed? there is a series of amendment votes that will begin in around 11:45 a.m. this
7:28 am
morning depending on what happens with those votes including one amendment in particular to add a warrant requirement to spying on any americans that get swept up in fisa data collection that amendment is key because if it gets included maybe this bill still passes out of the house, but then it could run into major hurdles over in the united states senate, there is an april 19 deadline to get this all finished up. and the white house has been watched very closely to see what final form this bill takes now, weighing in on what they're going to do until they see what that bill actually looks like. jim. >> all right, very interesting, not out of the woods yet. all right. lauren fox. thank you very much. let's just continue this discussion. jeremy, now is william cohen a former republican senator who served as defense secretary during the clinton administration. this secretary, thanks as always for being with us. can you imagine fisa not being reauthorized and what would that do to the intelligence community

>> i can't imagine that that will be an advocation of everyone in the congress. >> the >> responsibility to protect and defend the american people the former president is opposed to this fisa because he thinks it was directed at him. everything is always directed. >> it >> is with the protection of all americans are not directed at russian former president in front. so i think something will be done. i think there'll be modifications, but now on the last, i can't imagine any member of congress saying, i'm voting against fisa and we'll go without it until an person comes into off. i think one dangerous and absurd >> yeah. i mean, sorry, sorry. cone to that point. i mean, this morning the speaker sent out a statement with this kind of framing. he says the revisions of the surveillance measure, quote we're stopped. the fbi's abuses of pfizer's section 702 inquiries and prevent another phony russia hoax investigation by the fbi.
7:30 am
they still cannot stop making this shameless concessions to trump well, don't we have to the top committee heads for either homeland security and intelligence saying that the russians are here, it's a >> russians are trying to alter our election once again trump invited the men back in 2016. they came, they'd been here ever since, and now they are bombing us but bots and other types of misinformation, just information. once again, the russians are here and i think that anyone in the house it says, we don't need this protection. they are aiding and abetting the russians. they are what i would call the pooh, two nieces that putin nice is and the house of representatives, something i never thought i would say about republican members of congress being the arm of a vladimir putin and trying to undermine our democracy >> yeah, i mean, president reagan would not approve. no
7:31 am
question about it. and secretary cohen, i do want to ask you. i do want to shift gears to the middle east because sources tell cnn that israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu who is convening his war cabinet right now to discuss readiness for a possible attack by iran. that potentially would be in retaliation for last week strike on that iranian consulate in syria what do you make of all of how de-stabilizing would that be if something like that were to come to pass? >> well, it would be completely destabilizing. this is one of the issues we have to face. if you go back to the center of the web that has been woven iraq, i'm sorry. iran is in the very center. they are the spider and you go out from that web, you see china, rishi, russia you see you see syria. you see others and written north korea, they all focus on iran. so if they were to be a war between israel and iran, all of those countries in the region may very well be
7:32 am
involved, not to mention those highly sophisticated, forward-looking countries in the gulf they, have everything to lose. and in terms of their countries as well this is a big deal. this is very important that you'd be netanyahu, not do anything without consulting with the united states military with our secretary defense quid president biden, because we have a lot of skin in the game on those. it's not just israel, is it sake? we have a lot of for americans in the region, thousands of. so we have a say in this and should have a say in it. i would hope that bibi were listened to president biden take care to help people who are starving don't make the united states a party to imposing salman and 30,000 people are killing 30,000 people. make sure they are fit make sure that they take extra care and going after those targets if they have to go out after hamas must be defeated he must be defeated in a way that doesn't kill thousands of innocent people. >> all right. former secretary

congressman jason crow row of colorado, who serves on the house intelligence and foreign affairs committees congressman, i do want to get to that, but just very quickly your reaction to how the fisa legislation is making its way through the house. are you confident that? >> we were >> just talking to lauren fox a short while ago? it sounds as though there might be some alterations to fisa that could run into trouble in the senate. are you confident that this thing can get to the finish line? >> well, i'm nervous jam, it's too close for comfort i need to correct some misinformation here. this is a program that's fundamental to our national security garrity the bulk of our intelligence on foreign spies, on terrorist threats, on counter narcotics on the fentanyl trade. most of this intelligence plug-ins comes from fisa and from this program, this program is a lawful program. it's reviewed consistently by courts that have said it's lawful, it's compliant with the constitution not reauthorized in it. with reforms that have been made
7:39 am
would be devastating to our national security and the impacts and the wrist americans would be felt almost immediately. so we're working very hard to make sure that that does not happen that way. deserve this various central national security tool >> and what's your reaction to this visit today between the house speaker mike johnson and donald trump i recall when kevin mccarthy made that pilgrimage to mar-a-lago right after january 6, resuscitated donald trump as sort of a political figure in this country. after the shameful way that he left office. and here you have mike johnson going down there with donald trump very much almost in charge of the republican house conference, i guess arguably he is in charge of the republican house conference what's your reaction to this visit today? >> well, first of all, our constitutional system requires a separation in the balance of powers congress has an independent obligation to be an independent in french, i take that very seriously. i don't always agree with my own administration. sometimes because i had an independent
7:40 am
obligation. it's very scary to see the extent to which the house republican conference has become captured by donald trump and just take their marching orders from him almost real time. he'll tweet something out and tell them to vote for or against something that's not at how our constitutional system works. and it's extremely scary. but with respect to this election integrity event that they're hosting, this is classic projection. this is donald trump. the same guy who ordered the secretary of state of georgia to come up with 10,000 fake votes so he could win the presidential election drumming up. is some kind of election integrity event. it's crazy, it's absurd. the 2020 election was the most secure election and our nation's history, according to all the data all the experts, there was no widespread fraud. in fact, most of the fraud cases that came onto the election were people trying to support donald trump as a matter? and our facts, so this is this is crazy stuff and people should see it as such.
7:41 am
>> is the speaker trying to, trying to, i guess, make amends with the former president is some extent because he is trying to pursue this reauthorization of fisa with some tweaks to it and potentially i've put a bill on the house floor that would fund ukraine, that would send aid to ukraine. does he have to pay this visit? a kiss the ring in order to make those things happen in the house to understand the visit from a political standpoint, does it make political sense from that standpoint? >> i don't know. i don't spend a ton of my time inside the brain of mike johnson or other folks who put down there the kiss donald trump's rang. i simply i cannot understand that i mean donald trump is extreme danger to our democracy. he is in my view, an unstable man that poses a variety of dangerous so i can't wrap my brain around having thinking like politically you have to go kiss someone's ring to get their support when ukraine are starting to lose its war, when one of our largest intelligence tools is at great risk right

now, we're not able to govern on very simple things that the american people deserve to govern on. i just can't wrap my brain around any of that be honest with you. we can and should do better >> and i did want to ask you finally, seen in his report and i talked about this with bill cohen in the previous segment. this prospect that there might be a reprisal strike from iran going after israel. there's a reporting that israel is bracing for that kind of this act of the white house says it's watching it very closely. you're on the some very key committees up on capitol hill. congressman, how worried are you about iran striking at israel? so in the coming days i'm worried, obviously the risk is very high it just from a common sense perspective and it would make sense that iran would retaliate in some way for the strike last week so we're just being very vigilant. finland at about it. the administration has being very vigilant about it. this is the perfect example of feeling better that there are very serious smart people that take this stuff seriously. in the

report for april was just released in despite disappointing inflation reports, americans attitudes toward the economy he are largely holding steady, cnn's matt egan joins us now. matt, and it's an obscure sounding report. but any of these little tea leaves that come out about the economy these days, everybody is going and going through those numbers and poring through them because folks want to know is inflation coming down? how are people feeling about the economy? because we're in this election year and it could really hinge on on those issues. >> the absolutely. i mean, this is a measure of how americans feel. so we pay really close attention because there's big economic implications consumer spending is the biggest driver of growth. and obviously, there are political implications as well. so these new numbers show that consumer sentiment didn't move much, but it did dip slightly lias april started off going below 78 versus just over 79 in march. that was a little bit unexpected. and it does reflect lingering concerns with the cost of living, right? housing, car insurance, energy
7:49 am
is a big one. we know gas prices are starting to tick higher now let's look at where the trend is for this figure and this chart shows that back in 2020, consumer sentiment tumbled during covid, and then it really punished two years ago when inflation was on fire. and i think the good news is clearly sentiment has bounced back from two years ago, but i think the bad news here is that it's still well below pre-covid levels. and so if you're sitting in the white house you really are hoping that those numbers improve more than they have. and it does seem as though sentiment sort of like inflation, some of the progress there has started to really stall out here. jim. >> yeah, people are our fairly happy with their four or one ks stock market has been roaring lately. i guess it's a little bit of a dip the last couple of weeks, but as long as inflation remains persistent, they're going to be those concerns are we're going to see it reflected in these numbers. matt egan. thanks as always, really appreciated. >> coming up, getting >> back on schedule round to
