8:00 am
swelling of blood vessels in the eye and increase in eye pressure has been seen there's an uncommon risk of heart attack or stroke associated with blood clots. the most common side effects were blurred vision, cataract corneal injury, and eye floaters and there's still so much to see >> if >> you are on alia or similar type of treatment. asked your retina specialis. try now
8:01 am
for free visit otter.ai, ai or download the app. >> i'll rafael romo at the georgia state capitol in atlanta. this is cnn cnn breaking news >> i'm wolf blitzer, the cnn newsroom, and we're following breaking news out of new york right now of four only eight, four magnitude earthquake rattling the tri-state area just a few moments ago, initial reports indicate there shaking was felt in new york, and new jersey donna philadelphia, as well as washington, dc, where i am right now, the nypd says no damages or injuries have been
8:02 am
reported, but only happened a few moments ago, new york's governor, kathy hochul says, her team is assessing the impact and the new jersey governor phil murphy says he's activated the state's emergency operations center, cnn, as of course, covering the story from all angles, i want to go to our meteorologist elisa raffa. she's over at the cia weather center for us. so at least walk us through what we know so far >> yeah. well, i mean, i know that new yorkers are quite shaken both figuratively and literally by this earthquake. we know it was a 4.8 magnitude earthquake with that epicenter in central new jersey. it was a hello earthquake, which is why so many people were able to feel the shaking. looking at some numbers, at least 23 million people felt light shaking 300,000 people felt some of that moderate shaking. so i know from people in new york that they had things that were shaking on shelves and getting tossed around in trust rhino people that were driving
8:03 am
on the roads and felt it while we were driving in the heart of new york city. now, this area is not really prone to earthquakes, we don't really have a big seismic fault or anything on the east coast here, it's not like what we've been talking about in taiwan. that's seven point magnitude earthquake that sits in an area that's prone to very large earthquakes on the ring of fire, or it's not even like california. also another spot that is prone to earthquakes sitting on multiple foot-wide. this is an area that doesn't really get earthquakes like this. so quite, again, literate and figuratively really shakes people in this area because four magnitude is significant on that scale. again, mount many people feeling that shaking. so again, it is a shower, which is why people were able to feel the shaking that happened at about 10:20 this morning. many reports of that, and i know from family and friends, i'm from new york, so always photo call some
8:04 am
family and friends that, you know, things were kind of shaking and toppling in the city. no reports of damage and an earthquake of this scale could maybe do some isolated damage. but again, it's not the kind of scale and scope that we were talking about earlier this week in taiwan. again they think it just kind of mostly figuratively shake z the emotions and rattles people because this is an area where you wouldn't expect to get earthquakes, you wouldn't really expect that at all. >> so if >> we can continue to show some of the maps that we have here, if we can kind of click through we can show where we've got some when the shaking and what some of those impacts might be. 4.8 magnitude would be very light on the impacts that would be light on the damage. here's a look at the population again, like i said, that center right there in new jersey, but you can see that it stretches over into long island. we had reports of people filling feeling it down towards villi up into connecticut just
8:05 am
spreading with some of that shaking a lot of it again, pretty weak, but, you know, at least some of those people did feel some of the stronger shaking as well, and some of these impacts again, could be on the wider side for something like this. but, you not in an area. this is just an area that's just not, you who's to it. we just don't really see this type of shaking or this type of impact here on this part of the east coast, right? so again, this is the population that felt that earthquake four magnitude in the center there of new jersey being felt across the tri-state area. and it just really rad those people. there because they just don't get things like this there. wolff >> yeah, it's very, very scary. i remember a few years ago when we had an earthquake here in washington, dc and it was very frightening for all of us. we were in a high high floor, but we could feel it. i didn't feel anything this time, but friends of mine are are texting me right now washington dc area in maryland
8:06 am
and virginia. they felt it as well. so we're watching this very closely. i want to go to cnn national corresponding gloria pazmino. she's joining me on the phone right now. she's in queens, new york. what was it like where you are? gloria so, wolfe, i have to tell you, i've lived in new york city, my whole life. never have. i experienced what we just did shortly before ten 30 this morning. i was about to leave the apartment and suddenly everything started shaking. i could feel the floor was shaking. i could hear the dishes and my cabinets were rattling initially, i thought there was a big truck driving down my street. i live in a old prewar building, second floor apartment. and sometimes when heavy vehicles go down the road the apartment and dutch shake a little bit but i have to say after the first five, six
8:07 am
seconds, it became pretty clear. it was an earthquake. you mentioned the earthquake we felt in this area several years ago that felt like it was a lot shorter and not as strong as this last one. and we've been hearing from people on the air. this is just an area of the country where we are not used to feeling this kind of thing. so it is extremely sort of jarring and shocking when you feel it i could feel the floor shaking underneath my feet. i get here my neighbors upstairs that were coming down the stairs and heading up to the streets because for a moment there wasn't sure if it was safe. i can hear the neighbors asking each other if they were okay. but we should say that as of the last few minutes, we have heard from the fire department here in new york. they did receive reports of shaking buildings and they are
8:08 am
responding to calls to evaluate structure stability. so far there have been no major incidents here in the new york city area yet, but they're perfect continuing to monitor. it was a a few seconds. we'll of wondering what was going on. nothing. have i i had never felt anything like it in my years of living here in new york there are various standby. the mayor of new york, eric, eric adams, his office just posted >> this on social media. new york city just felt the impacts of a 4.8 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter of lebanon, new jersey, new york city's mayor is being brief. this is from the office of the mayor. while we do not have any reports of major impacts that this time we are still assessing the impact. so there are bracing for a lot more. and gloria, i know you're still with us, so let's talk a
8:09 am
little bit about the great fear once there's an earthquake, is that there will also be aftershocks which could be very very damaging as well. so far, you felt the earthquake, but you haven't felt in the aftershocks have yet >> i have not. now, when and the mayor's aides have also put out a tweet advising people that the possibility of aftershocks that they're possible and not to panic and what to do if we were to feel an aftershock. i have not felt anything since since shortly before ten 30, which is when we felt first selfie earthquake. so we'll see, hopefully we don't feel that again because it was quite unpleasant but you know, as you said, this is just not an area where we're used to this kind of thing. i know our friends in the west coast and in california are used to this. but new york city is not
8:10 am
a place that is built for this kind of thing not a place that is used to feel playing this. so i do think it's scary for people. and there is concern, you know, new york being a very old city with a lot of aging infrastructure. again, i want to be clear so far. no reports of any damage or any injuries or anything like that? but i am sure that it does because churn people considering that this is not a place that is either used or equipped for this kind of, of, of a phenomenon >> and we're showing gloria, our viewers a map on the left part of the screen. and you can see the epicenter to the west of new york city in london but in new jersey, not too far away, but that's why it was felt the jersey area, new york city area obviously connecticut as well, was also felt down here in washington, dc in the area including maryland, as well. so we're watching this.
8:11 am
no reports of structural damage or any serious problems, least not yet. but it's very, very early. it just happened a few moments ago, cnn's polo sandoval is in new york for us right now. paula, what are you seeing? what are you hearing? how did it feel >> well if you're on the streets of new york speaking to folks on the sidewalk and reaction is a bit make some people certainly felt it while others i just spoke to a couple of visiting from mexico city is certainly no stranger to this checking. they didn't really feel a thing about 30, 35 minutes ago when this event took place here, some preliminary numbers from the us geological survey here tells you really paints a clearer picture of the potential impact she are in terms of the number of people that likely affected this this earthquake earlier this morning, according to preliminary preliminary report, some roughly 23 million people people lightly experienced some light shaking about 300,000 moderate shaking, and about 9,000 people likely experience it's been described by usgs as stroke on shaky. this is all based on some of those preliminary reports right now that preliminary information that indicates that this was a
8:12 am
4.7 magnitude earthquake that rocked the region earlier this morning. but a key takeaway right now, wolfe in terms of what's happening on the streets of new york, it is relatively businesses as usual, right now though people are certainly buzzing about the events that took place earlier today. but the main point that we're getting right now from new york city officials, as you just reiterated and send it our colleague gloria, is it? there are no injuries to report at this time. also, know any signs of damage, but you'll speaking to friends and loved ones in the area, they certainly felt it. i know that my wife felt it and she lives here in new york city. and so there's certainly a concern about aftershocks. so we haven't been or felt any indication of that. the mayor's office recommending that should that take place or putting out some guidance for residents and it's important for people to either the drop to the floor for a cover their head and neck and then take additional cover under heavy furniture, should that take place? but again, at this point, it seems that that event that took place at about 10:30. and here are the streets of new york. it is business as usual, but you ask him about the earthquake and there's certainly ready to talk about
8:13 am
it >> certainly is pretty scary stuff. indeed, standby, paula, we're going to get back you as well. i want to bring in susan hough right now. she's a seismologist with the us geological survey, susan. thank you very much for joining us. give us some context right now. first of all, what can you tell us about this, this 4.8 earthquake? >> well so the estimate now is 4.7. it might vary a little bit. it is obviously it not a usual event. it's not unheard of that >> and the >> west coast of north america, you have an active plate boundary, you have the san andreas fault and we know that's an active with quake zone on the east coast the continent and the ocean are glued together. you don't have an active plate boundary, but you do have stress and we have had moderately large earthquakes and damaging earthquakes up and down the atlantic seaboard in charleston, south carolina in 18, 86 in virginia in 2011, and quebec in 1989. so they do
8:14 am
happen going back to the 1700s and 1800s, there were earthquakes close to magnitude five near new york city so we've just had one of these infrequent events. we don't 4.7, we don't expect to be large enough to cause damage it's just not that big, but it is strong enough as people have been describing to be strongly felt. >> and you say 4.7 because we had heard good upgraded to 4.8, but the latest information you're getting, susan aza was a 4.7 magnitude your information may be more up-to-date than than mine. is that the estimates between 0.1 that they're going to change a little bit as the data are looked at more closely. >> should folks out there, because it's been felt not only in new york, but in connecticut and new jersey including down here in washington, dc, in suburban maryland folks have felt it should people be worried right now about aftershocks?
8:15 am
>> sure. that's a great question and we earthquakes in the east were felt farther than the same size was quake in the west because of the nature of the earth's crust is different in the two places. so it's typical that people have felt this one so widely. yes. aftershocks are always possible in magnitude three-ish would be expected those would probably be felt more in the local area. there is always a small chance that an earthquake is going to be followed by something bigger within a few days, typically those odds are low and it may be one in 20 or one and 100. but they're not zero. so we know that that is a remote possibility. >> susan, what does it say to you that the epicenter we're now told is in lebanon, new jersey, west of new york city right? doubts it's right in the central new jersey, but west of new york and we're showing it on a map right now. >> yeah. if you look at where earthquakes have struck the mineral virginia, as we call it
8:16 am
earthquake in 2011, it wasn't directly along the coast, it was into virginia little bit so there are stresses along the atlantic seaboard because you have continental crust sort of glue to oceanic crust and you've got things going on geologically. but it's not like a localized san andreas fault where we know where the earthquakes are going to fall. you have zone of stress so it's not surprising to see earthquakes within that broader zone >> susan half we will stay in close touch with you. thank you very much for your expertise. >> thanks >> to our viewers. we're getting some incredible new video just in out of new jersey showing the earthquake. watch this >> doesn't seem so >> incredible this video. but it's people running out. you can see that inside people clearly feeling this
8:17 am
earthquake. you can see the shaking. this is inside a coffee shop in bouton in new jersey. i want to bring in cnn's pete muntean he's here with us in washington, dc, and i know there's already been an impact as far as air travel is concerned at the major airports in new york, including down here in washington, right? >> that's right. well, you know, the thing is he can't feel an earthquake in the air, although passengers are definitely feeling the impact of it right now, ground stops still in place per the faa at newark and at jfk until half past the hour, 11, 30 eastern daylight time, the faa has tweeted out a statement saying that this is a rapidly evolving situation. then they say that there's 4.8 magnitude earthquake in new jersey may impact some air traffic facilities, new york, new jersey, philadelphia, and baltimore. we do know now that philadelphia and baltimore had been removed from the ground step list air traffic operations resuming as quickly as possible. so we're continuing to follow this genie cifar of the faa says that crews there at newark and at
8:18 am
jfk still need to inspect the runways. are greg wallace listening to air traffic control audio is that's coming in in real time. he says crews from the port authority of new york have inspected the runway. they're at newark. it seems like some flights are departing right now. but some flights are having to be diverted that we're bound to new york. remember new york is sitting on the move, never sleeps and the thing here is the impact on the infrastructure in new york, those in california made short all about this but new york is very much a bridged and underground city. and so new jersey transit is treating out that all of the lines on the new jersey transit system are being held by about 20 minutes, right now because of inspections that need to take place at bridges to put this into context for you after the 2011 earthquake here in washington, dc, there were a lot of things that were damaged. the national cathedral was damaged. the washington monument was damaged and close for a fairly long period of time. so this is not over just
8:19 am
yet. and inspectors, those at the travel that at the travel space will need to make sure that things are all clear so that the one one-and-a-half million people who commute to new york every day can continue to do that safely and successfully. we're just seeing the impacts. now. there's rapidly evolving situation, wealth we see the impact that pete, as far as aviation is concerned into the major airports in this area. but give us an update as far as you know, >> what about the trains, the acela, the amtrak trains? are they being held up as well? we >> know there is an impact on the northeast corridor from new jersey transit. nothing specific just yet from amtrak there are a lot of tunnels and there are a lot of bridges that the trail system in the new york area relies on. that is so critical. so we're waiting to hear a little bit more from amtrak about this. we're also waiting to hear from the port authority about this. the latest from the nypd transit chief is that there was no specific damage it's reported just yet to infrastructure in
8:20 am
new york, although of course it'll take a little bit of time to assess that as the crews are able to get out there and truly lay eyes on a lot of this stuff. it's usually just a visual inspection that they need to do to make sure that things are okay? >> yeah. pete muntean, we'll stay very close touch with you the ramifications of this earthquake could be very, very serious down the road. we'll watch it all together with you. thank you very much. we're going to take a quick break. we'll have much more and all the breaking earthquake coverage in new york and the area here in the northeast there right after this this suis, but kaitlan collins tonight at nine >> hey, also, i just don't want to the experience app because i wanted to check my fico score, but it does so much more. this thing shows you your fico score. you can get your credit card recommendations and it shows you ways to save money do so, much more than get your fico score, download the experian app now, yeah, your worst nightmare, your car broke down. now you worried if it's

8:26 am
computer here and hudson yards. and for your viewers, just to set where hudson yards is located it's on the western edge of manhattan it is a huge complex. the newsroom is located on the 18th floor. and when the ground started shaking i felt it my colleagues felt it as well. but as you can imagine, when you live in a place like new york city, you begin to second guess herself. i was thinking, is this sum thing that is happening again, i said this a little earlier, but it hadn't eaten this morning. i thought perhaps in my lightheaded, but then i saw my monitor move just ever so slightly, i come out of my office there, then all the producers are pouring out my fellow correspondence. it was jean casarez who said, i think we just had an earthquake and i said, oh, that's what it was. i'm originally from california and so i'm accustomed to feeling the ground moos beneath my feet, but not in a place like new york city and i think a lot of new yorkers, a lot of people in new jersey, a lot of people in connecticut who felt
8:27 am
the same thing. we're wondering the same thing wolf, but at least for now, we are getting reports that not hearing any reports of significant damage we are expecting a briefing from new york city mayor the governor, also, as you said, she is expected to have a briefing in a short while as well. the governor already put out a statement that said my team he is assessing impacts and any damage that may have occurred, and we will update the public throughout the day. we know that the tunnels are being checked on holland tunnel, being checked on at this point as well. but again, this is something that folks were feeling all the way out east, an hour-and-a-half plus a way in places like thank long island. they were feeling it all the way out in new jersey. they were feeling it in connecticut as well. magnitude 4.4 some of the reports that we were getting from folks wolf included dishes, rattling, some things, moving off of shelves, things of that nature. but
8:28 am
again, when you're in a place like new york city, this is not something one would expect. you expect a lot of other things when you live in new york city, but not the ground to move beneath your feet will all jason, be careful over there. we will stay in very close touch with the adjacent carroll are reporting from new york are meteorologist at the cnn weather center, elisa raffa is joining us once again. we see the epicenter is in northern new jersey, west of new york city in lebanon, new jersey. and but it's been felt all across all the way down here in washington, all the way up to new hampshire. it's a pretty significant earthquake. elisa. >> yeah. because it's so rare for this area in the shakes and this part of the country can really just, you know, people can feel it wide ranging. i've been looking through my phone so many emails and take out a lot of family in this area getting reports feeling it all the way up from connecticut, all the way down to baltimore and dc have family in delaware that didn't quite feel it, but
8:29 am
we know a lot of our colleagues in philly and dc felt it also another family friends saying that newark airport was shaking. we know that that had affected, air travel as well. >> and we're >> not really finding the extent of damage, but more so just the rarity of this of the shaking of 4.8 magnitude is just not as common here in this part of the country was centered in new jersey and millions of people live here. we're talking about the biggest populations. and during the country. and i, you know, and we know people felt it in the streets while they were driving. things were again, kind of getting tossed around and moving because that shaking was so significant and it's also because it was kind of shallow when that earthquake is more shallow. that's when you can feel it more of the deeper it goes, the harder it is to feel that shake map really shows when we know so it was felt even farther than this, right? you have to report it to the usgs for to show up on this map, but we know at least by
8:30 am
some of the data, it's stretching down towards baltimore in philly for some of the people that have felt the shaking 23 million people felt at least light to shaking light shaking 23 million people about 9,000 at that epicenter really felt that very strong, strong, significant shaking, but the light shakes, light and moderate shakes are stretching for miles for millions of people. >> now we haven't >> had too much word yet as far as aftershocks, but when you get an earthquake that's 4.8 magnitude, you can on average get at least one one earthquake that's 3.8 magnitude. you can get at least ten. that's 2.8 in magnitude, and you'd get our hundred, that's at least 1.8 in magnitude. so it can happen in his common. we haven't really any heard any reports of that, but that can happen as far as economic losses. we know we haven't heard too much about damages, you know, any physical structural damage because again, with this being a 0.8, you don't really see too much catastrophic damage
8:31 am
with that. and it is showing with some of the data that we have from the usgs that it is lower on that impact scale, i think we're we're finding a lot of that impact is a lot of new yorkers just physically, emotionally rattled you know, just because it is so rare and so not common in this area, a lot of people walking about on their friday trying to wonder what that was. i know we heard from guessed that people thought maybe it was the truck that ram by or what was that? everybody is just asking each other, what was that? because so many people felt the shaking. so what we can what we know so far that it was very light, but shallow. so that's why we could feel the shaking in places like new york city, philadelphia, and washington, dc. some of our biggest cities in the country seismic waves can travel farther on the east coast than on the west coast. on the west coast, we have a little bit more of that fault line structure and that's where the earthquakes are more common. you have more of the fault lines in the volcanoes that seismic activity from
8:32 am
alaska down towards california, you're sitting on the ring of fire that's where these things are much more much more common. and we've been doing coverage earlier this week about the seven point magnitude earthquake in taiwan, which was catastrophic destructive. you had more of that damage, you had more of the industry injuries. and that's an area that's much more prone to this as it sits on the ring of fire there in southeast asia. but this it's just not, it's not that we just don't get these types of earthquakes in this part of the northeast from new york to new jersey. it's just, it's just not common. it's not common at all. and i think that's just why, you know, our emails have been and phones have just been, what all of the family and friends that are just saying, what was that? what was that shaking that so many millions of people were able able to feel this on that front on, on today on this friday, wolff? >> yeah, it's a really a scary situation. as i mentioned a few years ago, we have earthquake here in the washington dc area.
8:33 am
i was up in an upper floor in a building and everybody was told to evacuate the building because there was concerns, there could be damaged even in these big buildings what is the recommendation generally now in the aftermath of a 4.8 earthquake, should people be evacuated, tall buildings because we saw it in taiwan those images of those buildings that is simply collapsed untilted over what's the recommendation as far as? what we're seeing right now >> yeah. for sure. i'm not sure about any specific reports on what they're doing when all of those skyscrapers up in new york city. but absolutely, you don't want to be at the tops of some of those buildings if they might be shaking you know, a lot of saying is. you want to get under something, right? good luck. low to the ground and cover yourself in case anything is falling, right off of shelves life pictures, plates, things like that. so stop, drop and role getting are getting in, getting underneath covering from anything that might be falling. so for sure
8:34 am
you'll definitely not want to be up towards the tops of those skyscrapers. we haven't heard anything thing about damage or were waiting some updates from officials about things like that, you know, we haven't heard anything really from the weather team about anything like that. i think we're really mostly just hearing people just confuse really, and just so surprised and just emotionally shaken by this as well as figuratively, just because it doesn't happen as often. >> yeah, i remember when that earthquake happened here in washington, there clearly was some structural damage at the washington monument and that had to be shut down for a long time before they could strengthen that. and rebuild it to a certain degree. so let's hope for the best right now. and once again, how worried should we be elisa? aftershocks >> so they're common for sure, they're definitely common. and i have a graphic that me see if i can get to it that can show the aftershocks and what what they what they can look like for a 4.8 magnitude. so this is
8:35 am
the amount of people that felt it. but to get to your question about the aftershocks when you have a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, you can get at least one earthquake that's 3.8, which is still significant. people would feel that people who feel that as an aftershock when you're looking at a 2.8 magnitude, you can see ten of those and you could see 101.8 magnitude. now you might not feel as many of the he's the very, very small ones, but you can get those aftershocks with this and they could be, you know, in the dozens. >> we haven't >> really had too many reports of aftershocks yet, but it is certainly possible and they could be pretty large. i know. with the earthquake that we were tracking and some of those aftershocks were really significant some of the aftershocks would have been significant about would've been significant as an earthquake on its own. so again, no no reports here of aftershocks yet, but something that we'll be watching. >> we will certainly be watching at least a rough, uh, thank you very much. well, of course they have very close touch with you. we're getting

monday at one >> we're following the breaking news more information are coming in on this earthquake here in the northeast new video of the earthquake that rattle the northeast in the last hour or so so take a look at this at any moment now we're told the diarra governor kathy hochul, will hold a news briefing. she will make a statement. we'll have live coverage of her remarks if we stand by for that, we're also learning now that president biden over at the white house let's has been briefed on the earthquake situation. cnn's arlette saenz is joining us live from the white house right now, our lead, what do you know >> well, we'll president biden has been briefed on this earthquake along the east coast with his team saying they are closely monitoring the developments here, the white house press secretary karine jean-pierre, posted on social media moments go quote, the president has been briefed on the earthquake, which had an epicenter in new jersey. and he is in touch with his team who are monitoring potential
8:42 am
impacts. she added the white house is in touch with federal, state, and local officials as we learn more and the president was here at the white house when this earthquake occurred. he is set to leave the white house in the next hour to travel up to baltimore for maryland. well, he will see firsthand the wreckage of that devastating bridge collapse of the francis scott key bridge. the president will be meeting with local officials. they're surveying the damage as they talk about the next steps in the recovery process, there. now, the president's also scheduled to meet with families members of the people who's six loved ones died in that bridge collapsed just last week. so there will be a few opportunities to hear from the president today what he leaves the white house and about less than an hour, and then also as he is in baltimore a bit later today where he is expected to deliver remarks, but we'll see what else the white house house has to offer about what they're learning of this earthquake and whether the president is in touch of perhaps with the governors of new jersey and new york at some point today as well. >> did you feel anything over at the white house sarlin? >> i didn't not. my producer has to be either waldenberg and
8:43 am
i were sitting in the white house booth here in the basement and we did not feel any shaking i unclear. i talked to a few people at the press office who also did not feel anything. but we will see there are a lot standby. kathy hochul, the governor of new york, is making a scrape 45 miles west of manhattan. we actually felt that here in the capital in albany, people felt it in long island. and all over the state of new york. and indeed the east coast you're taking this extremely seriously. and here's why there is always the possibility of aftershocks. and i'll get to that in a moment, but we have not felt the magnitude of an earthquake of this levels since about 2011 actually, i was in washington, dc at the time in my apartment when i was in congress was severely damaged. we felt those effects all the way up to flow new york. so these are wide scale possibilities >> this >> is one of the largest earthquakes on these coast occur in the last century. so i
8:44 am
immediately directed my emergency management team the second we received word of this to start doing damage assessments so any life in danger and finding out whether there's any bridges are tunnels that are compromised. and so that was the first reaction. all you'll be hearing from the team that is working on that. i also amelie spoke to governor phil murphy to offer any assistance and to find out well, what is happening in his state, which will again was the epicenter. our teams have been encaustic communication with the mayor of new york. we also spoke to the mta to ensure the integrity, the structural integrity of the subway system, the port authority. and i want to announce that right now, jfk and newark airports are on full grounds stops two assess any potential for after effects. and we're betting contact with utility companies to make sure that the gas and electric services continue. i will report that amtrak and mta are on full schedule. no disruption there this time. ben and communication with the white
8:45 am
house, they reached out to us, the deputy of homeland homeland security advisor, who is actually with president biden right now, is surveying the damage in baltimore, called us and i believe they felt the effects even in baltimore. so it's been very unsettling de, to see, say, the leaves, but the white house offered any assistant senator schumer reached out, offered any assistance. so right now, it's most important that we have our structural teams out there are engineering teams serving our bridges are rows, any area there could be a fault line that is not easily detectable to make sure that passengers on our rails as well as are commuters are safe assessing all state roads. commissioner domingos is taking lead on that, making sure our state roads are safe major transmission lines and dams, because you don't always see the effects of a small crack that actually could develop into a real major problem. and we're also encouraging all the municipalities throughout the state of new york to assess for any structural integrity concerns at this point. but
8:46 am
you're heading into an hour-and-a-half after the effects, we've not identified any life-threatening situations, but we are certainly asking our local law enforcement and emergency services teams to be on guard for that as well. but again, we're going to be reviewing all potentially vulnerable infrastructure state sites throughout the state of new york that is critically important in the aftermath of a of an event like this. now, again, i have a few safety tips because new yorkers are not accustomed to having earthquakes in our state. and everyone should continue to take this seriously if there is an aftershock people are encouraged to drop into cover and to hold on dropped to the floor, cover your neck, and hold onto something that is sturdy take caution near any damaged buildings again, that we don't have reports of damage buildings at this time, it is very early in the assessment process. says but if there is an after effect, please stay away from buildings especially are high-rises. >> if you >> hear shifting or any noises, unusual noises leave your home,
8:47 am
go outside, you are safe for their than an a building that could be crumbling around. you. >> inspect your home for damage, check walls, floors, doors, windows, staircases and if you see any damage at all, you may need to relocate to a while. the event is going on again, check your own gas lines and waterlines to make sure that your family is safe. so stay connected and informed. >> i will say this >> especially with all the national news about what happened in taiwan with that deadly earthquake just this past week, i think there's a high level of anxiety around earthquakes the magnitude which catherine garcia and commissioner bray will explain that was a 7.4 magnitude and taiwan again, we are 4.8 and i'll explain the difference. but that's why we're going to continue to take this very seriously and make sure that we continue to update all new yorkers so catherine garcia or head of state operations you'll hear from first and then commissioner jackie bray had of homeland security >> thank you
8:48 am
>> thank you, governor. i want to reiterate that we have no reports of damage at this time and that immediately all of the infrastructure agencies activated their policies and procedures to deal with this because while highly unusual in the state of new york we do actually have fault lines this was significantly bigger than ones that are typically felt in the state of new york or occur and actually are not felt that is because earthquakes happen on a logarithmic scale, which means that three-point, oh is ten times worse than a to 0.0 so a 4.0 is ten times easier than a 5.0. so every one of those makes a significant difference in what you will experience and what the damage could be in addition, we are also tracking whether or not there's any increase in hospitalizations, as well as whether or not there's any
8:49 am
increase in vehicle accidents that has not been reported at this time? thank you. >> we should not much to add about the governor and director garcia covered it. i would say we did see an overloading loading speaking of cell circuits in the new york city area immediately after the event, we've been in touch with at&t, verizon and t-mobile. their networks are clear now, we're going to continue to monitor this briefing will get back to the governor if she's if she comes back to the microphone. but jason carroll has been monitoring all these latest developments. he's in new york for us who's been listening to the governor and these other experts update us on what's going on, what, what else do you know, jason? >> well, a couple of points to review here. first and foremost, according to the governor and her team no reports of any damage, significant damage she also made it clear that what the structural teams and engineering teams that work for the governor's office that they are checking any possible vulnerable site. so what does
8:50 am
that include? that includes things like the tunnel system the subway system. there are gonna be checking the area bridges checking for any sort of integrity issues that may exist after what has happened. she also indicated that the airports are temporarily at a ground stop again, this is so the infrastructure in an all around the airports can be checked as well. again, just to review, in terms of how widespread this was felt, wolf, according to the usgs, the us geological survey 9,000 people felt strong shaking 300,000 people felt moderate shaking, 23 million felt at least some sort of light shaking. and when we're talking about the area here, felt as far north as main new hampshire, and vermont. we're talking about feeling it in places like new jersey, connecticut, and all the way out and long island where we got to report from one of our producers she said that the shaking there was pretty
8:51 am
strong. and in fact, she felt as her water boiler was shaking very strong. but once again, what is important to remember here, no reports of significant damage, no reports of injuries. again, a reminder that even though we're here on the east coast the fault lines do exist and they do shift. >> wolf certainly do. it's still a very worrisome development indeed jason carroll, we'll get back to you in new york. i want to check in with our aviation correspondent, pete muntean right now. pete update us on the flight disruptions. here are the northeast there pretty significant already yeah, they are pretty significant wolf right now and the ground stop at newark liberty international airport has been extended until half past the hour 12th, 30 eastern daylight time. the ground stop at jfk has been canceled. the ground step at laguardia canceled. philadelphia bwi canceled. so the faa tells says this is an evolving issue to they're staying on top of it. they need to inspect the runways at some of these airports in order to get things fully back to
8:52 am
normal, there was a call, a conference call at the faa earlier in response to this remember the best place to possibly be during an earthquake is possibly in an airplane. but the issue is really the infrastructure and so they need to really inspect things on the ground those inspections also occurring by amtrak right now, amtrak says it's doing track inspections and it is slowing the speed of trains throughout the northeast that could mean delays up and down the northeast corridor pick customers are encouraged to rebook on their app. there's an 800 number that they have published remember, new york city on the move, never sleeps about 1 million to 1,000,000.5 people commute in and out every day. new jersey transit things are delayed, they're about 20 minutes on pretty much every line on the new jersey transit system the holland tunnel and the lincoln tunnel, the port authority of new york and new jersey says, both of those have been inspected and they are okay. hey, there was no delays in the holland and lincoln tunnel right now. although remember, especially this is important to put in context for the
8:53 am
californians watching who may chorizo at those new york is not a city that is really built for a lot of seismic activity. it's heavily tunneled. >> a >> lot of those tunnels are very old. one of the main tunnels that goes under under the hudson river from new york to new jersey. one of the main train tunnels is maybe 115 years old or more so. some of this infrastructure is aging and a lot of cases, those inspecting this infrastructure needed to go out and see it on their own visually with a mark one eyeball to make sure that things are okay. and so we're just really at the genesis of the story. wolf. and it may take some time to figure out the full totality of the damage here >> pete muntean, standby. we're going to get back to you as well. i quickly want to check in with richard roth, are senior united nations correspond to richard, i understand the un council was written the middle of a major meeting as far as the war in gaza is concerns when things started to shake over there, tell us what happened >> yes, people will often say
8:54 am
the un doesn't feel anything during these global crises, like the mideast. but the meeting was ongoing and then the speaker, a un official paused the camera when to a wide shot where you couldn't see anyone's face up close so there's a little confusion. and then you hear the palestinian ambassador sitting next to the woman who was speaking to the council, say you cause you made the ground shake is what the palestinian said. and then there were some back-and-forth where the speaker said, madam president, should i go on and the beating did continue you can detect some shaking from a un camerota, nothing dramatic like you see in the earthquake. the video in stores flying glass. >> and >> the meeting continued. we have not heard yet from anyone who is attending the session, but the un survived and back to the real-world, so to speak.
8:55 am
>> richard roth at the united nations verse richard, thank you very, very much right now we're once again, we're following all the breaking news, a 4.8 earthquake the epicenter, lebanon, new jersey in northern new jersey, just west of new york city. but this earthquake was felt not just in new jersey or new york, but all the way up to new hampshire, maybe even parts of main, all the way down here to washington, dc and maryland and virginia. there there were shaking going on to be sure we're told the new york city mayor, eric adams is going to be briefing reporters momentarily as well. we're standing by for live coverage of that and to our viewers, thanks very much for joining me here in the cnn newsroom. i'm wolf blitzer in washington of course, i'll be back later tonight, 6:00 p.m. eastern in this room and right back here monday, 11:00 a.m. eastern in the cnn newsroom. stay with us inside politics with dana bash starts right after this short break
