>> a key swing state primary, a new court hearing, and a battleground blitz all on deck this week as the trump-biden matchup mirrors, it's not many clinching moment tomorrow, voters across four states cast ballots with enough delegates at stake to make the likely presidential rematch officially official. georgia is one of those states and the site where both candidates sharpen their attacks over the weekend dueling rallies in that state, biden today, beginning of busy travel week in new hampshire as trump now stares down a thursday hearing that could once and for all tell us if he will go on trial before november. cnn's priscilla alvarez is leading us off from the white house. what more are you learning about what we're going to be hearing and what voters will be hearing from president biden as he gets going on the road >> well, this past weekend really provided a window into what we can expect in this election as these campaigns ramp up in the president in
4:03 am
georgia, this past weekend, a crucial state that he only narrowly won in 2020, trying to the court, the diverse coalition in this state and get them energized to go to the polls in november and to do that, he leaned on one of his key and defining themes for his election. and that was protecting democracy, using that to draw a stark contrast from his republican rival, donald trump. >> my lifetime has taught me to embrace the future of freedom and democracy, to trump. and i have a very different value set of an obvious already biden is based on core values of the defined america. and the rest of the world looks at us that way >> decency >> fairness, equality. we're all know donald trump sees a different america an american story of resentment, revenge and retribution. >> that's not me, that's >> not you now sara, i spoke to

voters before and after the president's remarks, an georgia and this was a message >> that did resonate with them, but it's one of many. they also are moved by lowering healthcare costs. and on that front, president biden is heading to new hampshire today or he's going to ramp up his attacks against republicans and donald trump on health care in a state that has one of the country's oldest populations. all of this building off the momentum of the state of the union address, which by the way, according to the campaign, they are in ten or raised $10 million in the 24 hours after the state of the union. so all of this coming together as the president hits these battleground states this week priscilla alvarez, thank you so much for that, trying to keep that momentum going seems to be working so far for him. >> look, that's one half of the battle that is shaping up this morning. and this morning we're getting a new window on how donald trump will attack joe biden on the trail relentless and personal going after everything from in policy to the president's stutter.
4:05 am
cnn's alayna treene has the latest, what are you learning later? >> well, good morning, john. >> yes. the former president and his team really already feel like donald trump is the presumptive republican nominee. but tomorrow as they head into those four states, those elections, they really are hoping that will be the place place where they can clinch the unnecessary delegates to make donald trump the official republican nominee. and like biden, donald trump was also in georgia over the weekend and he really became more personal in his attacks on biden. and it's a state that donald trump and his team recognize is very crucial to their general election strategy. did you get to state that donald trump lost by less than 12,000 votes just four years ago. and they really see it as being key to their strategy of trying to beat biden in november 1 of the states where they're going to be building out a massive operation, a ground game strategy really trying to make sure that it can be donald trump's once again in november. now, take phil, listen to some of the rhetoric

that donald trump be used on saturday. again, becoming very personal against joe biden attacking his stutter going after him as being a threat to the country. take a listen tonight, she go. we all heard crooked joe's angry, dark, hate-filled rant of a state of the union address wasn't it didn't it bring us together emerging border, bring the country together i'm going to bring it together. >> it's not an age thing. it's a competence thing. >> now, john, there had been questions initially of whether donald trump would try to rein in some of that very inflammatory rhetoric, particularly the personal attacks on joe biden. as you can see from that clip we just played, donald trump is continuing to be donald trump. and i think you can expect him to continue new to lean hard into attacking biden's appearance, his stutter, and really going after his age and competency as you just heard there. and one other thing i just want to quickly point your attention to is another big thing that his campaign is
4:07 am
dealing with right now, which is his mounting legal troubles. we know that he has a trial set to start later this month in new york this thursday it's a crucial hearing in his federal documents case. and so that's another thing behind the scenes that is really playing out with the trump campaign as they are gearing up in earnest now for a general election fight against joe biden, drawn right? >> alayna treene for us in washington, alayna, thank you very much >> we have some breaking news this morning coming from the royal family responding for the first time just now about the controversy over this family photograph and accusations about being manipulated also, this one passenger says people flying and broke the ceiling. the plane after a major incident, mid flight, injured at least 50 people. and ryan gosling trying pretty much successfully stealing the show at the oscars >> to be a headliner, was

london. clare tell us is going on yeah, john, the 32nd member of nato, or the second new members since russia's full-scale invasion of ukraine, obviously finland joined just >> about a year ago, doubling. nato as land border with russia. sweden obviously doesn't do that, but it does add a lot of strategic capability and presence for nato in two key regions. one it, is, the baltic region. i don't know if we can show you the map, but you can clearly see now that the baltic region is now almost completely encircled by nato countries, just russia and its kaliningrad enclave and the baltic, remaining. it's now being dubbed nato lake. this is something that jens stoltenberg, secretary-general of nato, highlighted debt today in the second region is the arctic russia is now the only one out of eight arctic countries that is not in the nato alliance. so it is significant. sweden has a very high-tech very advanced military. and of course, this is the exact opposite of what president putin wanted was one of his stated goals was an invading ukraine was to prevent

ever before, i think, especially now that the front lines are looking very fragile, especially in the east. it's very clear to ukraine that even though this is good news, it's still not enough. it's still not functioning as a deterrent to russian aggression. clarify indian >> soil, clare, we're looking at live pictures right now. we can push in. you can see that flag of sweden being raised outside the nato headquarters in brussels the blue and yellow there, the wind just making unfurl just a little bit. they're now officially the 32nd nation, the 30-second flag to fly outside this headquarters in brussels. clare sebastian okay. i assume that's the the swedish national anthem playing in the background there. clare sebastian, thank you very much for being with us >> also this morning, we've seen an exclusive which could raise alarms about the future on the frontlines of ukraine, cnn has learned that russia is making nearly three times as many artillery rounds then what the us and europe combined are producing for ukraine, a senior
4:16 am
european intelligence official says russia's war machine is in full gear. and as artillery factors are going nonstop ahead of a potential offensive later this year, cnn's katie bo lillis joins us now to share her exclusive reporting. katie bo tell us more about what you've learned here. >> what i've learned is some, some pretty staggering numbers that really illustrate how quickly russia has been able to ramp up its defense production for use in ukraine in ways that have, have really left the us and the west behind in some ways. what i have learned from a senior nato official is that the most important number here of course, is artillery? according to this official, russia is producing about 250,000 artillery munitions per month, or about 3 million a year. and that's compared to just 1.2 million artillery rounds that the us and europe are producing for use in ukraine. in the same timeframe and in about a year. and this is important because officials please tell us that artillery is really the number one metric that they are watching in
4:17 am
ukraine here, right? what this is really a war that is expected to be won or lost on the number of artillery rounds that are able to be traded back and forth across this 600 mile front. it's really the math here, really matters. and as a result, ukraine has really had to two ration the number of artillery rounds that it's able to fire in a day. we know from these same officials that ukraine is firing about 2000 artillery rounds per day compared to about 10,000 that russia is firing. and in some places, we're told the ratio is even worse. russia officials tell us has been able to ramp i'm up its defense production much more quickly than the west and large part because it's effectively a managed economy in which putin can really just order these factories to fire up and start producing, right? and so we know from officials now that russia is factories, russia's artillery factories are running 24/7 in rotating 12 hour shifts and it's fact the defense sector, according to the senior nato official that i spoke to, is now the largest
4:18 am
part of their economy. and of course this, this matters because ukraine has now become so dependent on western support, western aid to be able to continue this fight. and we're watching now with us funding for support in ukraine really drying up. and europe sort of rushing to try to make up the shortfall, but not clear that they're going to be able to sort of produce as much as the us has been providing. really now, this all comes down to whether congressional support for aid for ukraine in the united states restarts. it's been stalled by republican opposition now, ukraine closely watching what will happen with that support going forward and what happens in the presidential election in november. >> katie bo lillis, thank you for bringing us that exclusive reporting >> sir. >> all right. ahead. >> was this image of the princess of wales and her children manipulated, changed, photoshopped. she has just responded to the controversy over this family photo will have a response. also, cnn

2024 because katie britt's never going to apologize for this yeah, it actually shows how our politics have just downwardly spiraled over the past few years. katie britt was a rising star until she wasn't and what we saw in that state of the union response. i don't know where the expectation level was for her but we know the expectation level for joe biden was extremely low. but for katie britt, i believe that people thought she was going to come out there and be the next coming of a barack obama. and that's just not the case. >> not just >> this story that she told where she fabricated the edges so that it met her narrative. but the fact that they had her in an ikea kitchen and she was doing all that heavy breathing, trying to act as if she was in hathaway it was just a weird, weird, weird set of circumstances. and i feel really advocates be brave because the people around her get her no justice

>> i want to ask you about where this campaign stands right now because we saw both candidates in georgia, president biden than donald trump or in georgia over the weekend. and donald trump was attacking joe biden, not just for his policies but he was making fun of the president's stutter, which is something that president biden has talked about, that that he dealt with from the time he was a young man all the way until now. and i'm curious. now, there are people who see this in are going to go like, oh, my god, this is donald trump again crossing a line. but is there an element where trump thinks this works >> this is who donald trump is. i mean, he's an habitual line crosser. this is what he does. and i think that we become desensitized to this now, because really i don't think i care. about him. clark kerr's, i know joe biden and doesn't care. this is just who that man is. he is a small person who picks on people and tries to bully them. but i can tell you one thing at the state of the union the biden campaign is on fire. they're raising money,
4:44 am
they're traveling. the surrogates are out. the talking points of fire. that call and donald trump, a loser and he's feeling that pressure. so i don't we can't get caught up in every single bad name or bad word, or bullying tactic that donald trump uses because that's just who he is. i mean, he literally is a small oh, man. and that is why he does things like this. i don't think joe biden really cares except to the extent anna, do you think this shows that trump and the republicans will try to make a central argument in this entire campaign. joe biden's age yes, which is ridiculous given donald trump's age. and the way he pronounces words without having a stutter. in other words, he mangles so many different words. he can't even save venezuela. and he doesn't have a stutter as an excuse, right? so look, i does joe biden care that donald trump is picking on him and making front of him. he doesn't. but i think last week there was this story. does america have amnesia about donald trump? he's not been precedent for four years. and i

think these cases, these incidents, reminders of what an absolute horrible human being in decent jerk this man is and continues to be, has always been and will always be if it's not making fun of a disabled reporter, it's making fallen john mccain up prisoner of war because he couldn't even lift his arm or making fun of the looks of women. i mean it's just making fun of people who stutter. >> there are tens of thousands of people in america who stutter. children who struggle with this children who get bullied at school. and that's the part that matters that because of things that donald we saw this when he was president, because of things he said and did there were children getting bullied and schools and i know children with stutters. i know the suffering that this causes on a child, the shame and embarrassment. so yes, it does matter to me and it reminds me of what a horrible, horrible

person donald trump is because sellers, the biden campaign and president biden headed to new hampshire. they talk about health care, which is always interesting because it is something that democrats campaign on almost whenever they can. how effective is it still as a campaign issue? >> it's very effective it's effective for democrats for the main reason that people understand the benefit bestowed upon them by obamacare or the affordable care act and conversly, it's even more effective when you realize that republicans have no alternative other than to try to take that from you you've even heard donald trump say early in this campaign that he was going to repeal the affordable care act again, but repeal it and replace it with what? and so going into new hampshire swing-state with this message of health care, making sure that we are doing things like lowering prescription drug costs. the president can tout things that he's done like capping the prices of insulin making sure that individuals are insured, they're not bankrupt when they have a

medical emergency. these things matter. these are tabletop issues. and so what joe biden in the democratic party has to do is break through the noise and the chaos that is donald trump. and one way you break through is to talk about these kitchen table issues like health care and health care in 2024 also includes reproductive rights for women, which is an incredibly affected. >> so that'll be interesting if he brings that up on the trail and hand for this morning and navarro bakari sellers. thank you both very much. much. >> gas prices have hit the highest point in four months. why experts say, right now is not the time to panic over this. >> and emma stone with her second oscar when it's considered why it's considered one of the big surprises of the night actually. and should it be called kenergy or can energy? >> let the debate began on my dress

shoot, what's happening here is this, is this something we're going to be dealing with for a minute? >> well, hopefully not sorry. i don't know about you, but i love when winter ends, right? it means warmer weather, more sunlight, but unfortunately it also means higher gas prices and the stakes are protected if you're really high this spring, right? economically, as you mentioned, the higher gas prices go, the worst inflation looks some point that could force the fed to delay when it cuts interest rates politically, i mean, voters obviously hate high gas prices were not there yet, but a spike might be the last thing that the white house needs. and against that backdrop, we do said the national average, 340 a gallon as you mentioned, $0.21 higher than a month ago, $0.33 higher than that low and mid january, we should point out though that this is arthur actually a little bit cheaper than they were at this point last year, i still, we have drivers in some states, they're getting a little bit of sticker shock right now. we've seen kansas, missouri, montana north dakota, and utah all up by 47 cents a gallon or more, just over the past month. >> why is this happening? well, experts are saying don't panic

because some of this is kind of normal, right? demand was up as the weather improves, supply also gets a little bit more expensive because they have to switch over to that summer blend of gasoline that some refinery problems. so that is limited supply to. >> and then we have oil prices. they've gone up a bit, though, not dramatically. so but you put all that together. that's the recipe for higher prices. >> do you think this is going to last a long time? do we do we expect this to keep going up? >> well, i think the good news is experts to pretty optimistic that we're not going to have a repeat of that. spike above $5 a gallon in 2022 of course, there are wildcards, right? if the war in the middle east really spreads, if there's a massive hurricane that hits the us gulf coast. i mean, all bets are off, but short of that, gasbuddy's patrick de haan. he tells me that he still thinks the national average will not go above $4 a gallon all summer. in fact, we could see a peak a little bit earlier than usual, and prices should be

late-night of governance. what are your big takeaways from the evening? >> yes. just a few hours asleep after a very busy night in hollywood the biggest takeaway of the night, kate, as you said oppenheimer was the huge winner here. of course, this was a huge film at the box office and now it has been a huge film all throughout award season. one seven awards, came into so the night with the most nominations with 13, as you mentioned, christopher nolan winning his first oscar ever, which is hard to believe. also, robert downey, junior winning for supporting actor, also his first and kylian murphy, another first-time winner, also, oppenheimer winning for best picture. now, if we look at the biggest shocker the biggest upset as some will say, emma stone won her second oscar last night for her role in poor things. but she was going up against lily gladstone from killers of the flower moon and lily gladstone was widely
