1:00 am
. hello and a warm welcome to our viewers joining us in the united states and around the world. i'm bianca nobilo live from london. max foster is off this week.
1:01 am
just ahead for you -- >> every time they file an indictment, we go way up in the polls. we need one more indictment to close out this election. >> his name has been at the center of this whole issue the last 2 1/2 years. >> all these defendants have until next friday at noon to surrender. >> the state will have everything it needs from the federal government. >> even is pitching in, doesn't matter where you are from. >> from the ashes we will survive. >> live from london, this is "cnn newsroom" with max foster and bianca nobilo. >> it is august 16, 9:00 a.m. here in london, 4:00 a.m. in atlanta where in just nine days donald trump is expected to turn himself in at the fulton county jail over charges to subvert
1:02 am
georgia's 2020 election results. the former president faces 13 criminal counts in the georgia election investigation, but is already denouncing the indictment against him and 18 other cope defendants. in the meantime he has announced a, quote, major news conference next monday to present a report from his team on his own allegations of fraud in the case. georgia governor brian kemp is not backing down from the fight though. he maintains georgia's presidential election was not stolen and in fact anyone who alleges that it has been has been unable to prove it. trump's former white house chief of staff mark meadows is wasting no time attempting to have the georgia case moved to the federal court. s if likely that others will try the same move including former trump attorney rudy giuliani who sa that he is looking forward to fighting the case in court. >> i woke up this morning more excited than i have in weeks. why? because i have a fight on my hands and a justifiable one.
1:03 am
we'll beat these fascists into the ground. >> mark meadows argues that he is entitled to federal immunity since the charges stem from his time serving for the sitting president. maggie haberman says he could also be the defendant trump is most worried about. >> it was striking to see his name in this indictment because his name has been at the center of this whole issue as it has been investigated the last 2 1/2 years. but you are correct, he was not one of the co-conspirators mentioned as best as we could tell in the jack smith indictment, he has not been charged federally. he has been much less of a presence than we are used to around donald trump and he is one of the people about whom i think the former president is the most concerned about what they may or may not have said. >> after previously playing a key role in the alleged election interference, could flipping mark meadows help prosecutors win their case? jake tapper reports.
1:04 am
>> reporter: in donald trump's previous federal indictment, mark meadows had managed to escape any charges. leading many to wonder if the former white house chief of staff may have turned on his former boss. >> i think one name that is obviously not in the indictment is mark meadows who was kind of the ringleader of all of this. >> reporter: but meadows' fate charged monday night when the grand jury in fulton county, georgia charged him and 18 others with racketeering for their efforts to try to overturn the election. in the indictment prosecutors say the defendants joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of trump. beyond trump himself, meadows is the highest ranking official to be charged and the indictment outlines the key role prosecutors say meadows played to try to keep trump in power. in the weeks following trump's election loss, meadows got involved correspond to the indictment, he and trump met
1:05 am
with michigan legislators in the white house where the former president made claims of fraud. and he sent a text to scott perry asking, can you send me the number for the speaker and the leader of pennsylvania legislature. potus wants to chat with them. the following week meadows and trump met with pennsylvania legislators at the white house. the same day co-defendants rudy giuliani and jenna ellis also traveled to the sxcommon wealth and requested legislators to unlawfully appoint presidential electors from pennsylvania. meadows was also allegedly deeply involved in the efforts to overturn election results in georgia according to the indictment on december 22nd, meadows traveled to cobb county and attempted to watch an election audit that was in progress but not open to the public. he was turned away. meadows then around the a phone call between trump and the then
1:06 am
investigator for the secretary of state francis watson. >> they are so angry. they know i won by hundreds of thousands of votes. when the right answer comes out -- >> reporter: but perhaps the most notable meadows around the for president trump was with georgia secretary of state raffensperger. >> and everybody is on the line just so we all are aware. >> reporter: where trump told raffensperger this -- >> so look, all i want to do is this, i just want to find 11,780 votes which is one more than we have, because we won the state. >> reporter: meadows' role in that phone call earned him a send chargecond charge for soli of oath. jake tapper, cnn. and rudy giuliani has plenty
1:07 am
of legal troubles and it has not come cheap. it is creating a mountain of money problems for giuliani. >> reporter: rudy giuliani said tuesday he is anxious to fight the new charges against him in fulton county, georgia, that he wants to find a way to have his case moved out of state court to federal court so that he can be shielded. but that is going to take lawyering and at this point in time, rudy giuliani has a series of bills around fighting investigations and lawsuits that are really making him essentially out of cash. he says this in a court filing on monday, one that was in a lawsuit where he is being sued by the company smartmatic the voting company, they want access to some of the records he has, they are held up in a company that hosts electronic records and yet giuliani doesn't have the money to be able to pay for those records to be searched, that bill would be about $15,000
1:08 am
or $23,000, somewhere in that range. and he just doesn't have it. so he's had to go to the court and say he doesn't have it, but on top of thatthere are so many other legal bills that giuliani has at this time that we're learning about in court filing after court filing. there is a $20,000 fee for him to keep his electronic records stor. so that he can respond to otr lawsuits. there is a $57,000 court judgment that he recently received because his company, giuliani partners, didn't pay all of its phone bills in 2020 and now have to pay that $57,000 for the unpaid phone bills. there is also a sanction that he has received from another judge in anoth lawsuit related to the 2020 election of $89,000 for not turning over all of the evidence he needed to just like in the smart matmatic lawsuit. and so others are trying to get
1:09 am
giuliani either pay for their legal bills and he is not responding the way that he needs to in court and they are also trying to get judges to rule in their favor since there are several lawsuits around him related to what he was doing for donald trump after the 2020 election. katelyn polantz, cnn, washington. death toll from the devastating maui wide fires has shot up to 106 in the last few hours and officials keep warning that the heartbreaking figure will only keep rising. they are sifting through the ash of what used to be vibrant neighborhoods in the tourist town of lahaina. so far they have made it through less than a third of the disaster zone. we're hearing the main highway will fully reopen for the first time since the tragedy. but it will still be closed fightly from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. local time. one resident described the devastation that she finds on her doorstep. >> this was a forest, you guys.
1:10 am
you couldn't see through here ever for hundreds of years. this was a huge forest. and this is what is left. and so what it did, it started down there. by sunset, i looked out the window and all i saw was just a huge glow like too close. so i came down here and i by myself, everybody had evacuated but me because i had no phone service, so i didn't get the alerts. and then i freaked because i've been alone and by myself forever. and i didn't know what to do. and it was like right here. i am just still kind of in shock. >> meanwhile fema disaster teams have arrived and genetic testing experts will help identify the victims. but the hawaii governor says that will be a difficult process that could take week. the u.s. president says he will soon visit the disaster zone and make sure that maui gets all the federal help it needs.
1:11 am
>> i've spoken to the governor multiple times and reassured him the state will have everything it needs from the federal government. i immediately approved the governor's request for expedited major disaster declaration, a fancy word of saying whatever you need, you will get. and that will get aid into the hands of people who desperately need it, who have lost their loved ones, who have lost their homes, their livelihoods, damaged and destroyed. >> one of maui's wildfires is now 75% contained. bill weir is on the ground and filed this report earlier. >> reporter: we are several miles from the destruction in lahaina and this is still an active fire zone, only about 60% of the up country fire has been contained and we can actually see at least two hot spots around here which explains the yellow helicopter. that is a maui fire department, he is taking bucket loads of water from a nearby swimming
1:12 am
pool of a home that was completely burned down, they are refilling it with a fire hydrant, but the fire department is stretched so thin that it is really sort of do it yourself diy fire protection which explains this setup. this homeowner was gone, his wife was here, but she fired up their improvised sort of fire prevention system and they are spraying it as far as they can down into the ravine here. with the fear that some of these hot spots might whip up. there is a couple storms brewing in the pacific. nothing near to the storm dora that created all of the firestorm winds. but still anything that would kick this up is one more horrible thing to worry about here. meanwhile in lahaina, officials say about only a third of the area has been saeshlged with cadaver dogs, about a dozen souls have been identified through dna, and then they have dozens of other families now giving dna samples because they
1:13 am
have loved ones who are missing. so as agony knowing maybe the worst that has happened but hoping that you will get a better result. here again comes another drop. in addition to the fire accident, sprinklers, we actually met a couple guys volunteers putting out hot spots with bottled water. sort of bush whacking through the dry brush. one actually burned a foot when he slid into still smoldering ash. so people understand here that there is a lot of action and sympathy happening in la lie in a, but this is an ongoing story and we'll stay on it for you. bill weir, cnn, maui. pentagon says it is focused to getting u.s. army private travis king back on to american soil after he crossed in to north korea last month. after weeks of silence, north korea has finally publicly confirmed that he is in fact in the country and says that he admitted to entering illegally.
1:14 am
paula hancocks is tracking this live from seoul. this is a very mysterious story. ugs u.s. and north korean officials seem to agree that they went into north korea intentionally. but beyond that, there is slightly different information. what can you tell us? >> reporter: it is interesting that this is the first time north korea has even broached the subject publicly finally admitting that travis king has crossed into their territory. what they have said, and this is of course all through north korean state run media, kcna, quoting travis king or at least saying the words are from him, but in this article that he harbored ill feeling against inhumane, maltreatments and racial discrimination win the u.s. army. so what pyongyang is saying is that the reason he crossed into north korea is because of racism. now, we have no way of knowing if that is accurate. in fact we've heard from a u.s. defense official saying that
1:15 am
they cannot verify the alleged comments by travis king. pyongyang alsoarm -- article saying he wanted to seek rev fufuge in north korea or a d country because of this maltreatment. again, we don't know if that is accurate. we don't have direct comments from travis king. we still haven't seen him since a month ago when he crossed the military demarcation line into north korea while on a civilian tour of the dmz, the joint security area. so certainly what u.s. officials are trying to do now is find out more information about his whereabouts, about his condition for example. that was not touched upon in state run media. also heard from his mother through a family spokesperson after this announcement from pyongyang and she said that she asks pyongyang to treat her son, quote, humanely. she also asks for a phone call with him. but we know from previous cases, from precedences of u.s. detainees in the country, that
1:16 am
is very unlikely. but certainly the concerns about travis king are increasing, but there is finally some acknowledgement from north korea that he is even in the country. he had served about 50 days in a south korean detention facility, he had been facing charges of assault in south korea. so certainly that is being looked at as well as a potential reason why he felt the need to run across the dmz. but as you say, most sides assume that he did in fact do it voluntarily. >> paula hancock, thanks. still ahead, hunter biden's legal troubles are growing more complicated as his top defense attorney asked to withdraw from the case. we'll untangle all of the latest developments. plus amid the ongoing fighting in sudan, officials say they have discovered more than 1,000 bodies in dozens of mass graves. we'll have the latest from the conflict. and then a rebound of record

as a typhoon hits western japan, an evacuation warning has been issued to hundreds of thousands. state media reports at least 26 people have been injured so far and thousands of customers are without power. the powerful storm made landfall early tuesday with winds equivalent to a category 2 hurricane. japan's meteorological agency says rainfall in two towns over a few hours exceeded the average amount for the entire month of august. about 35 million people are under heat a alerts for wednesday. it covers much of the pacific northwest and parts of texas and portland's energy company is asking residents to cut back on energy consumption. jennifer gray has today's forecast. >> we're going to see intense
1:22 am
heat across the pacific northwest and it will be short lived, it won't last too long, but it will be brutally hot. we have heat alerts up for the pacific northwest, a lot of areas especially look at this, medford, 108 your high temperature today. we do drop by the time we get to friday, 100 in portland, seattle close to 90. normal high is 78 degrees. so a huge departure from normal across this region. in fact we are finally seeing cooler temperatures across portions of the mid south where high temperatures in memphis, 81 degrees. that has really come down. but along the gulf coast, temperatures will stay very hot. dallas at 97 degrees, that is cooler than we have been. kansas city at 85, d.c. at 87. below average temperatures will take hold across portions of the east but below average temperatures will quickly start to build in behind it especially for the northern plains as we get into the beginning part of
1:23 am
next week. cooler temperatures will be found across the rockies and west. feels like temperatures this afternoon, 101 in houston, 91 in shreveport, 97 in dallas. so really temperatures are in the 90s but feeling so much better than we have been over the last several days and even weeks on end. so i think that it will be a noticeable change across this region. high temperatures will climb though once again, enjoy it while we can, temperatures at 97 degrees, because we'll be back up to 109 in dallas thursday and friday. monroe hitting 104 on friday. new orleans hitting nearly 100 by the time we get to friday. we have a couple lingering storms that we have to deal with today in the southeast. we do have a severe risk across the upper midwest with damaging wind and large hail being your primary threat. this is a level two out of five when it comes to severe weather. so here is that forecast radar and you can see the showers and
1:24 am
storms racing across by the time we get into wednesday night into the wee hours of thursday morning. your forecast rainfall looking at about an inch or two of rain. we could see heavier downpours with hire amoungher amounts acr of the areas. but the big story is the heat across the pacific northwest. u.s. officials plan to ease water restrictions on the colorado river next year due to above average winter snow pack. they say it helped reverse plummeting water levels at the nation's two largest reservoirs, lake mead and lake powell. right now lake mead is about 20 feet higher than it was one year ago. severe weather is blamed for causing a 32 vehicle crash on a highway in north carolina. i-40 west is reopen now after the pileup forced authorities to close down a 2 mile stretch of the interstate on tuesday. it is not clear whether anyone was seriously hurt. the severe weather also caused

many other roads in the area to close due to downed trees and power lines. now to a grim discovery in sudan. a government forum in west darfur says there is evidence of 30 mass graves albeiacross the with more than 1,000 buried in them. the group claims that some of the bodies were dumped by allied militia. sudan has plunged into chaos since the fighting broke out. for more, let's go to stephanie busari live for us in lagos. this is just a harrowing and tragic discovery. what has the response been to this finding? >> reporter: as you can imagine, it is total devastation. and west darfur has born the brunt of some of the worst
1:26 am
violence in this four months war that seems to have no end in sight. community leaders are telling -- been reporting of bodies being found in these mass graves, but also evidence theyry saying of militias, the rsf, other faction involved in this fighting burying evidence of war crimes. they have said these mass graves were prepared by aid workers and that they were preparing the bodies for burial and then threatened to leave the bodies so that the rsf fighters could bury them in hidden locations. now, we don't -- we're not able to independently verify this account or how many mass graves there are in sudan. in july cnn reported that 87 bodies were found in a mass
1:27 am
grave and also in west darfur. now, this conflict has ethnic tinge to it. a lot of the bodies were found from nonarabic community tribes. and darfur also was the site of again side 20 years ago. devastation is total. schools are destroyed, hospitals, all the amenities. sudan's sovereign council deputy chairman is calling for a caretaker government to enable services to be provided. and so -- and the u.n. has also said that this is a war that many war crimes have been carried out here in sudan, bianca. >> stephanie busari, thank you. still ahead, donald trump remains defiant in the face of his fourth indictment. but what do some of his 2024

welcome back. if you are just joining us, let me bring you up-to-date with our top stories. more than 100 people have died in a devastating wildfire on maui. officials in hawaii warn the death toll will continue to rise in the coming days. so far only about a third of the search area has been looked through. donald trump and his 18 co-defendants have just nine days left to turn themselves into prosecutors in fulton county. trump who faces 13 criminal charges is vowing to fight the case. the former president ss that he will hold a major news conference on monday to reveal a report on election fraud. but as donald trump faces his fourth indictment, some of his biggest detractors in the presidential race are standing by him. jeff zeleny has more on their
1:33 am
reactions. >> reporter: once again an indictment for former president trump is really overshadowing much of this republican presidential race. one week before the candidates are scheduled to square off in their first debate in milwaukee. and now even if the former president is not on stage, and we don't expect him to be, this is still likely to be a central part of the conversation. now, most of his republican rivals are simply backing him up. most of his republican rivals are saying there is a two tiered system of justice. not exactly the criticism from chris christie who has been calling out the former president but even he said this atlanta prosecution may be unnecessary. >> i didn't think that it was a necessary thing to do. once you saw that jack smith was charging him federally for the very same conduct. there is a lot of deposit turning conduct here, not just by donald trump but by a number of others named in the indictment. >> they are now doing an
1:34 am
inordinate amount of resources to try to shoe horn this contest over the 2020 election into a rico statute which was really designed to be able to go after organized crime, not necessarily to go after political activity. so i think it is an example of criminalization of politics. i don't think that this is something that is good for the country. >> we see the legal system being weaponized against political opponents. that is unamerican and unacceptable. >> reporter: so if these past indictments is any indication of what will happen with this, the former president is likely to regain his base of supporters. he is likely to raise considerable money off the indictment and he is likely to turn this into his advantage at least politically speaking. but talking to a variety of republican advisers and campaign officials, they say this could be different. of course the case in georgia is so much different. it is much longer and it is in a state court. so these proceedings are likely
1:35 am
to be televised, far different than the federal indictments. so for now in the short term, yes, he is gaining politically from this, but it is unclear how this will play out. one thing is certain now, the former president's legal campaign and his political campaign are one. jeff zeleny, cnn, washington. ukraine says its forces have labor rated a village in the eastern donetsk region after russian forces tried but failed to regain control. meanwhile in the south russian drone attacks overnight damaged grain facilities in odesa. nada bashir is following all these developments. yet again we've had more reports of drone attacks and the way drones are used is redefinieing modern warfare and you are hearing more information about the relative self sufficiency of russia. >> yeah, that is a real concern now because russia imported the iranian made drones about a year ago and they have been using
1:36 am
them to devastating effects particularly around the port of odesa where we have seen port infrastructure and agricultural infrastructure being damaged following the breakdown of the black sea grain deal. but now we're learning from new uk ministry of defense intelligence that russia is actually beginning to deploy its own manufactured drones. so if we look at the intelligence report, they say russia has begun deploying domestically produce d drones. and the local manufacturing will ensure that russia has a reliable source, essentially making them self-sufficient in the future. but at this stage they are very much relying on components or whole weapons from iran. but we've had the message reiterated by ukrainian authorities that there need to be more stringent controls and sanctions when it comes to
1:37 am
controlling supply of foreign technology getting into russian hands. and that was reiterated yesterday following a devastating barrage of missile attacks across lviv where ukrainian authorities say they discovered foreign made chips within missiles. and so they have concern about the supply of this technology to the russian authorities and to the russian armed forces. so they are currently working with their own international partners to try to ascertain more details around these foreign chips and where in fact they are being manufactured, but they need the stringent sanctions being put in place and enforced at all times particularly as the counteroffensive continues to grind on. while we are seeing ukraine regaining some territory particularly in donetsk region, this is not going as quickly as they had hoped and the warning is that there is a long road ahead for ukraine. >> especially when you are
1:38 am
seeing this war of attrition, these things which can seem incremental and have a major impact on the ability of the russian side and ukrainian side to sustain. nada bashir, thank you. just ahead, a former nfl player subject of the oscar winning film "the blind side" says he was tricked by the family he thought wanted to adopt him. the family's response to that, next. inflation here in the uk has dropped significantly for the second month in a row. it fell to a 17 month low in july of 6.8% compared to 7.9% just a month earlier. falling energy prices are the main reason for the decline. the us saw fuel prices drop by a record 25% between june and july after a price cap kicked in at the end of june. amid the day office the latest trump indictment,

president biden is trying to turn the country's attention toward his own administration's accomplishments particularly his efforts to boost the economy. mr. biden toured a manufacturing plant in wisconsin tuesday but despite promoting the "inflation reduction act," a climate tax and health care package that passed a year ago, polls show many americans aren't even aware of it and his messaging may be overshadowed by his son's legal troubles too. those legal troubles for hunter biden are only getting more complicated. his top defense attorney has asked a federal judge for permission to withdraw from the case because he could be called as a witness in future proceedings. kara scannell has the latest. >> reporter: david weiss says huptsder er hunter biden is not off the hook in the gun charge after the plea deal fell apart last month and merrick garland gave weiss

special counsel status. and therefore none of the terms are binding on either party. that is after biden's lawyers argued to the judge that it was a valid and binding agreement. the deal would have resolved the felony gun possession charge if biden adhered to certain conditions including not possessing a gun or using drugs or alcohol for 24 months. this is as his long time defense attorney christopher clark asked the judge to withdraw from the case saying he could now be a witness to the now contested deal. one thing both sides do agree on is dismissing the tax charges filed in delaware. prosecutors asked the judge to it is missdismiss them so that could potentially bring new charges in california or washington, d.c. where the alleged tax crimes took place. kara scannell, cnn, new york. the u.s. government is planning to rein in companies

that sell americans' personal information. the consumer financial protection bureau teased changes that would help americans from data breaches. this could prevent brokers from selling income, criminal and payment history information. and it could also see new restrictions on the sale of personal information such as names and social security and would also seek to ensure that data brokers selling that sensitive information did so only for valid financial purposes such as background checks or credit decisions. a lawyer for the family at the heart of the blindside movie says his clients are heartbroken over the allegations. oher filed a petition to end tuohy conservatorship over him. he accuses them of tricking him into signings paperwork saying that they were looking to profit from him and his story. the family's attorney calls the claims hurtful and absurd.

brynn gingras has the details. >> okay, big smile. >> reporter: michael oher blindsided he says by his family at the center of the hollywood blockbuster. >> this is your family. you have to protect them. you protect his blind side. when you look of him, you think of me. >> reporter: in a lawsuit the former nfl player alleging that he was tricked by sean and leigh anne tuohy obelieving that they were adopting the star when in fact they became his conservators and, quote, have total control over michael oher's ability to negotiate for or enter any contract despite the fact that he was over 18 years of age and had no diagnosed physical or psychological itdisabilities. a lie oher says he discovered in february. or his life story from poverty to nfl stardom with the support of the tuohy family became a
