super bowl when mike jones made the game-saving tackle. auburn beats alabama in the 2013 iron bowl most exciting win ever. that is tough to beat. remember the missed field goal they took to the house to win. and boise state statute of liberty play against oklahoma. that was a good one, too. >> thank you so much. you are awesome. thank you so much. we appreciate it. we're starting "new day" next hour right now. >> announcer: this is cnn breaking news. so grateful to have you with us. i'm christi. and i'm black well. >> tension between israelis and palestinians that gripped israel in recent weeks. secretary of state john kerry in paris this morning and moments ago he spoke about the attacks and also the situation in syria. listen to part.

>> later this week i'll meet with prime minister netanyahu because he will be in germany moment. coming through at that we'll meet there. thenally go to the region and i will meet with king ab dudullahd others. i'll have key meetings on the subject of syria with critical players with respect to that. so we are as deeply aged as i can ever remember in trying to help resolve some of these very complicated explosions sectarianism, and violent extremism. >> all right. let's go to phil black in jerusalem who has been covering the story. after listening to the secretary's words and talking about these upcoming discussions and meetings, how influential can he be and what can he offer
5:02 am
to try to quell some of the violence here? >> well, i guess what he's hoping to do is lower the tensions to get the sides to step back a little. on the subject of the tensions, i want to show you what is going on behind us. give you a sense of why things here are as tense and strained as they are at the moment. we're at the outskirts of a palestinian community. what you see is a fortified israeli check point. you see a line of young palestinian men who want to leave that community to enter jerusalem proper and from there what they're being -- what's happening here is they're being searched. each one at a time is made to stand in a distance, show he's carrying no weaponries. this is what all the male residents of the community have to do in order to leave the

community. they're pretty angry about it. they find it humiliating. that's what they've been telling us. the security measure is in place because of the knife attacks that have been taking place in jerusalem and elsewhere in recent weeks. it's one of the israeli responses. where as palestinians collected punishment and the entire community locked down because of the attacks. the israeli government believes it is necessarily hopefully short term step two deter and prevent and punish further attacks from taking place. that's what the israelis are trying to do. what the israelis want the palestinians -- they say the palestinian leadership to call for the attacks and violence to end. secretary kerry gets here what he will be seeking from both sides is i think what both sides to take a step back and certainly what the israelis would like the palestinian leadership to do is to hear from them stronger language condemning these attacks and really trying to bring it in to
5:04 am
the violence and the tension that we've seen here in recent weeks. >> phil black in jerusalem for us. we'll look at one of the check points as well. thank you so much. let's talk about with daniel leavy. so good to have you with us. i want to kind of piggy back off something phil was saying. they want to hear them condemn the attacks. do you think it will happen? >> it happened 0 maon many occasions. he continues to be recognized globally as a man committed to nonviolence, but the condemnations and calls for the riot are not going to be enough if, unfortunately, the israeli side continues, as we heard in the report, to humiliate palestinians collectively on a daily basis. not only in the west bank but
5:05 am
also in palestinian neighborhoods of east jerusalem. so it's going require actions from both sides and it's going to require israel not exacerbating the situation in which palestinians already feel they have no rights and no dignity. both are insecure now with both leaderships are going to have to step up and the israeli leadership cannot simply pass it over. >> when we talk about these discussions being orgestrated by secretary kerry coming up, what do you envision the content, the verb age of the substitutions to be that might do good here? >> well, here's the thing, christinchri chrisi. we're talking about how to deescalade the immediate crisis and a crisis that is driven in
5:06 am
the moment by mostly what are called local palestinian individuals not guided by movements but venting their frustration in violent ways. that's a very difficult thing to get a grip on. but beyond the immediate moment, to really see some kind of stability and security we're going it have to address the root causes. we see these waves of violence every ten or 15 years. until they have security but palestinians also feel they have security state, no settlements an end of occupation all the things that talks about as a wish list talk about for a reason. because in the absence of both sides -- people are going to do something about their
5:07 am
predicament and inevitably some of the doing will spill over into violence. that's what the secretary is well aware of. what he tries to do painstakingly was to say we're in a period of security let's use the period to make peace rather than to build more settlements. >> yeah. except now it's not so quiet and diplomacy won't work with the young people showing their frustrations. we appreciate it daniel levy. >> let's talk about the jeb bush donald trump view that is coming more contentious. the former florida governor unleashed a two minute ad politicking trump. plus run, joe run, that was a new york crowd's chant. next we'll show you how he reacted as we await his answer on a potential 2016 bid. is,
