things starting on the strip. it has arrived. the first democratic presidential debate tonight here behind me at the wynn las vegas on cnn. hillary clinton will be center stage. bernie sanders next to her. can he convince a wider audience to feel the bern. martin o'malley and lincoln chaffee and jim webb. hillary clinton at a union rally outside a donald trump hotel. a doubly advantageous moment for clinton. she can bash donald trump and appeal to organized labor. a group she needs in nevada and across the country. senior political correspondent brianna keilar has the story. >> reporter: good morning, john and christine. hillary clinton arrived here in las vegas and almost immediately went where? the donald trump hotel. she joined union workers

picketing outside the hotel co- owned by donald trump. the culinary union trying to make a splash as hillary clinton came into town. >> some people think mr. trump is entertaining. i don't think it is entertaining when somebody insults immigrants, insults women. that is unacceptable behavior. and so, when we are here together in solidarity to organize, we want to send a message to mr. trump. if you are going to run for president, you should represent all the people of the united states and that includes hard working people and you should not stand in the way of the right to organize because that's what built the middle class of america. >> reporter: she has been preparing for this debate in earnest. she has been working with a team of litigators.

some helped president obama in 2012 as well as a number of other candidates. her goal, one of her top aides is to tell me to cut through the politics. she has been dealing with the e-mail controversy and her aides hope this gives her a chance to talk substance and get attention of so many watching the debate. bernie sanders, her closest competitor taking a different approach. his campaign is a little more low key. you often have teams downplaying how prepared their candidates are. they say he has been reading up on the issues and has been doing some q& a, but not full on mock debates. his goal is to show he is a serious candidate. he is a self described democrat

socialist. john and christine. >> brianna, thank you. among the themes he will hit is returning the billionaire class to the middle class and making college more affordable and rebuilding infrastructure. sanders said american roads and bridges are falling apart. >> that is why i have proposed a $1 trillion investment over a five-year period for the crumbling infrastructure. that creates up to 13 million decent paying jobs and at the same time because we are improving our infrastructure, make our country more efficient and more productive and in fact safer. >> sanders also wants to draw contrast with secretary clinton

with the free trade deal and the keystone pipeline. his team is working hard to lower expectations. you her brianna talk about that. they note that hillary clinton has lots of experience in national debates. this is sanders first time on the big stage. for the three other candidates, all polling in asterisk territory. martin o'malley and lincoln chaffee and jim webb. o'malley has been doing rehearsals to simulate television lighting. he will talk about his executive experience as baltimore mayor and governor of maryland. and jim webb was secretary of the navy under president ronald reagan. lincoln chaffee was a republican

for most of his career then becoming independent and now democrat. one who is not here? joe biden. will he be a candidate? he spent the weekend at home with his family in delaware. you can see him here, at least, i think, his blackberry. his aides say he will watch the debate. it will not influence his decision. those close to him say he does not have a self imposed deadline. they say he seems to be in favor of running. he has state filing deadlines at the end of the month. stay with cnn for the first democratic presidential debate. coverage at 8:30 p.m. eastern here on cnn. on the republican side, a rough perception for donald trump, but the no labels

conventi convention. trump tried to convince the crowd he knows how to compromise. he says it is better to compromise and win. he was bragging about his poll numbers and knock his rivals out of the race. let's get more from sara murray in manchester. >> reporter: here in manchester, instead of meeting with adoring fans, he met with others in the no labels committee. some in the crowd were skeptical that donald trump who is famous for hurling insults. he faced combative questions about how he would treat him if he was elected president. >> if you become president, will a woman make the same as a man and do i get to chose what i do

with my body? >> you will make the same if you do as good a job and i happen to be pro life. okay? i'm pro life. >> reporter: trump was one of a number of candidates to speak here yesterday. including john kasich who spoke about the effort to balance the budget. all of those will be back on the campaign trail. trump will keep an eye on the democratic debate. he says he is watching, but not rooting for anyone in particular. back to you. >> thanks, sara. trump took a swing at hillary clinton. he believes clinton should be behind bars for her use of the private e-mail server. >> what she has done is serious. anybody else who has done it has had serious problems oreg gone

jail. i would like to run against her with that said. she is so flawed. she did such a bad job as secretary of state, i think she is beatable. >> jeb bush and carly fiorina targeting clinton's record. bush tweeted hillary clinton is rewriting her history of weakness and wrong choices on iran. fiorina tweeted a fund raising pitch. are you ready to beat hillary? get your official beat hillary sticker with a donation of $5 or more. you know, the table minimum here in las vegas is $10. $5 won't even get you a seat. >> i'm told you won $170. i'm not sure the fact checkers were able to claim you won at the table. john, it is all about the democrats. the republicans can get in the right hooks here, but this is about the democrats tonight.

john, whether some of the lesser known candidates can break through. do you think they will breakthrough by attacking hillary clinton? >> it is so interesting. they have to do something, don't they? they are nowhere in the race right now. one of the best ways to get your name in the headlines to take a swipe at hillary clinton. they have to be careful or perhaps martin o'malley has to be careful. what does o'malley want? unless he thinks he can win the nomination this time. if he is trying to set up for the future, is it best for him to tick off the clintons? will that help him four years from now? not so sure. >> john, thank you. we will talk to you soon. expect to hear tonight from hillary clinton and bernie sanders on really important kitchen table issues. income inequality and taxes and making college more affordable. we want to show you where they stand. on the minimum wage, clinton

u.s. military cargo planes successfully dropped 50 tons of ammunition to anti-assad rebels in syria. it is the first of the white house plan. moscow's intervention is prompting rival rebel groups to team up presented a more unified front against assad's troops. i want to bring in jill dougher dougherty. jill, you have the united states dropping ammunition to the rebels and vladimir putin's military supporting assad. those are two major world powers at opposite ends of a dangerous conflict. >> reporter: it is.

the word, of course, springs to mind, proxy war. it is disturbing. there were proxy wars back in the old cold war. this time we have the u.s. and you have it is a saudi arabia, qatar and others supporting the rebels and russia coming in with air attacks and softening up the targets and hitting these targets and that's debatable who they are hitting. the ground forces of assad going in to hit them. two sides. it is dangerous because as you pointed out, both sides are carrying out air attacks. and that raises this issue of could there be a mid air collision. they had discussions with the pentagon and the ministry of defense. it is a very troubling and hot situation right now. >> hot situation indeed. we know there was a 90-minute phone call with the two militaries this week where they

tried to work out protocol with how pilots talk to each other if they encounter each other in the sky. important for them not to have a mishap here, jill. >> reporter: exactly. that is exactly what it is. the language they use, the radio frequen frequencies, et cetera. they have to communicate to know somebody is potentially in your air space. the russians wanted to get into more areas political and otherwise. the united states said no it will be technical, thank you. we have another issue. the syrian special envoy for the united nations is here in town in moscow. he is talking to russian officials. at least the beginning of the talks. saying it is important to get the process moving forward some type of political resolution. after all, that is what both

sides say they want ultimately. right now, russia is doing it through military means. you could argue the united states, obviously, is trying to hit other isil targets. the movement to any political solution doesn't seem to be going very fast. >> quickly, jill, is putin shoring up the assad regime? is it more powerful because of the help from russia? >> reporter: i would not say they are more powerful. what president putin and he made no secret of that, this is his mission to prop up the regime, make sure it does not collapse. that's really the mission. push back the opposition forces, terrorists, et cetera, who have been weakening assad's forces and once you have the solid situation, you can move toward a

type of peaceful political resolution. the united states, of course, would say he's inn discripp krc nently hitting anyone. >> jill, very nice to see you. thank you. breaking news. a couple of hours ago, iran's parliament gave agreement to the nuclear deal. one sign of contention within the iranian parliament, lawmakers want to limit the access to the military sites. agreement would lift sanctions on iran. the house is not in session this week. there is intense behind the scenes debate over picking john boehner's replacement for speaker. support for paul ryan, pushed to run, says ryan won't make a decision this week. if he decides not to run, it could be a republican free-for-all. and he is actively considering a

bid for the speakership. georgia's westmoreland is considering a bid. jason chaffetz says if paul ryan is in, he is out. stoking the crisis is the house freedom caucus because the speaker would have less power and giving the rank and file more sway over floor procedures. we are hours before cnn's democratic candidate debate. we are live breaking down the rules and what you can expect next.

he will talk about his executive experience and mayor and governor. jim webb was the secretary of navy under president ronald reagan. chaffee was a republican for most of his career before becoming an independent as governor. now he is a democrat. he has all of the bases covered. one possible candidate not here? joe biden. will he ever be a candidate? he spent the weekend at his home in delaware with his family. you can see him here in the motorcade. aides say he will watch the debate but, debate, but it will not influence his decision to run. some say it does seem likely that is he leaning toward running right now. he does have real deadlines approaching. a filing deadline to get in the georgia primary is at the end of the month. other states follow after that.

contrast. contrast is a loaded word in politics. it means vote for me. not the other guy. the thing of how sharply you want to draw those contrasts, it depends. the attack scale. a sharp contrast can be taken personally. they need to distinguish themselves from each other. they actually like each other. >> so interesting. they both want to go after what is a rigged system. income inn equality. the little guy doesn't have a fair shot. wall street, they say hillary clinton's probably the best for them. they are not concerned about her. they are concerned about bernie sanders. maybe that's how they try to draw sanders. john berman, people are just coming out of dinner walking by you. it is early where you are, my friend. our coverage of cnn's democratic

civil war is prompting rival rebel groups to team up for a unified front. let's bring in journalist jill dougher dougherty. jill, we have the united states dropping ammunition to rebel groups. we have russia supporting the assad regime. at odds with the rebel groups. it is a dangerous situation. >> reporter: it is on many sides. you have this proxy war going on on the ground and in the air, you have both countries, russia, united states in a coalition carrying out air attacks. and that is why the two sides, pentagon and defense ministry last week, began some discussions. they had two discussions which were teleconferences trying to figure out how to make sure

those maplanes do not crash int each other over syria. this is a situation both sides say they want seems to be far away. at this point it is a military operation. on the ground where you have the russians with the air power helping the syrian forces on the ground to push back what russia would say is isis and what the united states would say could be more like opposition forces perhaps with a few rebels or terrorists thrown in. confusing situation and politically it doesn't seem to be getting anywhere off the ground in terms of resolution. >> jill, the u.s. up to this point has not had success with the rebel groups. any indication? too early to tell or if they are having a better job now? >> reporter: that's a very good question. that has plagued them from the

beginning. who were these groups? were they a coherent fighting force? could they actually be terrorists who want to get arms from the united states and west? that question really is not resolved. after all, the united states had a $500 million training program that it had to end last week because it yielded almost no results. so the question for the united states and for the west is how do you support those forces and can you trust them? can they ultimately be a coherent force to fight back against assad forces who are being reinforced by russian air strikes? >> jill dougherty in moscow watching this. thank you. time for an early start on your money. a setback for stocks around the world. asia markets mostly lower. weak trade data in china gets the blame. european markets, u.s. stock futures are down. let's relish the good day on
