what i do know is that the police and emergency services responded very quickly to the call out for members of the public. the police and other emergency services were well aware this was a dangerous man with a sword. they ran towards him and not thinking about their own safety to protect other members of the public. in addition to this child losing his life, two members of the public have been injured. they were both taken to hospital. two police officers have been very seriously injured, and are in surgery now. it shows the dangers police officers face every day. and can i thank them as well for their bravery? what else do you think about the actions of the police officers? i know from speaking to the commissioner that they were well aware this was a dangerous man, they were aware he had a big sword and they were concerned about the safety of members of the public and they were aware they were risking their own personal safety and it breaks my heart that this child has lost his

say, one of the main things we feel here is that while the ongoing threat might have subsided, the ripple effects of what happened this morning are being felt far and wide, politically and in terms of the community. the tragic news that changed everything came at around one o'clock when the police press conference was under way and we heard the tragic news that a 13—year—old boy had been fatally stabbed and died when he was in hospital. stabbed and died when he was in hosital. ., , ., hospital. you were there before we knew any casualties. _ hospital. you were there before we knew any casualties. i _ hospital. you were there before we knew any casualties. i cannot - hospital. you were there before we knew any casualties. i cannot hear| knew any casualties. i cannot hear ou at knew any casualties. i cannot hear you at the — knew any casualties. i cannot hear you at the moment, _ knew any casualties. i cannot hear| you at the moment, unfortunately. actually, i can. you at the moment, unfortunately. actually. i can-— actually, i can. can you hear me now? yes- _ actually, i can. can you hear me now? yes. you _ actually, i can. can you hear me now? yes. you were _ actually, i can. can you hear me now? yes. you were there - actually, i can. can you hear me now? yes. you were there when information _ now? yes. you were there when information was _ now? i2; you were there when information was patchy and now? i23 you were there when information was patchy and when we did not know about how many injuries there were, just reports of

when people are preparing for school and taking their children to school, and taking their children to school, and behind me is the main road. it is now cordoned off and residents who want to return to their homes, they have been told by the police it is not possible because there is too much information they need to gather. it is a shock to everybody, it was already a shot, but with the x news there has been this tragic turn of events —— the tragic news there has been with the tragic turn of events with the death of a 13—year—old boy, things have turned a lot. 13-year-old boy, things have turned a lot. * , , i, i' 13-year-old boy, things have turned a lot. * , , v ~ v, a lot. after speaking to the victim's family, _ a lot. after speaking to the victim's family, we - a lot. after speaking to the victim's family, we now- a lot. after speaking to the l victim's family, we now know a lot. after speaking to the - victim's family, we now know that the victim was in fact 14 years of age, not 13. dal babu is a former chief superintendent in the metropolitan police. he told my colleague azadeh moshiri how the met police respond to an incident like this one.

well, i'm very familiar with the area hainault. i was a sergeant there many years ago. it's a relatively quiet area. it's on the outskirts of london. it has relatively little crime and disorder. so this will come as a big shock to the local community. i think what the police will be doing once they've had those calls in at 7:00 in the morning, they would have been responding. you would have had multiple units responding to that. because of the sword that's been seen in the footage you may would have may well have aave's armed response vehicles attending as well. hainault is not that far from essex. so you may actually have essex police officers attending as well as metropolitan police officers — and i think the key thing there would have been the police officers would have been going to the seat of the danger and doing what they can to protect the public. and i think that's worth remembering —
2:44 pm
the police officers run towards danger when the rest of the public will run away from it. and those police officers showed extreme high levels of bravery. i understand two of the people that have been injured are police officers. and so the key thing now for the police to do is to keep this as a crime scene, co—ordinate and ensure that they collect as much evidence as they can. i understand there wasjust one suspect who has been detained. he was tasered by the police. but the police will want to try and do as much early investigation just to see if there is anybody else that they need to speak to and ensure that they negate any kind of danger to members of the public. and you said you were a sergeant in the area, that it's a relatively quiet area. can you think of anything that compares to what's gone on today? i mean, i was there for a couple of years and it was a remarkably quiet area, remarkably. it's near chigwell, which is a sort of very well—to—do area. it's near lots of
2:45 pm
parkland, open land. it's a very, very quiet area. and i can't think of any kind of incident that is on a par in that area. so these kind of incidents you'd expect in much more busier parts of london, as opposed to redbridge, which is a relatively quiet and safe part of the capital. and you mentioned police will have had tasers. you mentioned some of that response. they're running into danger, aren't they? there is a risk to themselves. how do the police prepare themselves to respond to that? well, the police would have had lots of training, but this would be a real incident. so i think in some ways police are on autopilot. theyjust run towards the incident, they put the training into practice and they do what they can to save people. that would have been their priority. i want to go to the newsroom. our reporter is there and has been
