now on bbc news, it,s sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm jane dougall. a breathtaking match at wembley — manchester united are through to the fa cup final by the skin of their teeth — after coventry city pushed them all the way. double dessers for rangers means they'll meet celtic in the scottish cup final after defeating hearts at hampden. and liverpool leave london with three points and their title hopes still alive after a win at craven cottage. also coming up on sportsday... a record number ran in the london marathon today

and a record was broken in the women's race with kenya's peresjepchirchir sprinting to victory. plus, a passion outside of football, we watch as england's georgia stanway inks her very first tattoo. welcome to the programme. what an incredible, nail biting match at wembley — many thought this would be a straightforward win for premier league side manchester united in the semifinal of the fa cup — taking on coventy who sit eighth in the championship. manchester united are through to the final where they'll play rivals manchester city — but it's been far from a walkover, going to penalties after extra time and united losing a 3—0 lead. andy swiss joins me now live from wembley.
7:32 pm
talk us through what happened. everyone frankly is still drawing breath after what has to be one of the most remarkable matches we have ever seen here at wembley. the coventry city fans came down here and their thousands. it was their first fa cup semifinal for 37 years but of course they were huge underdogs against manchester united. it all seemed straightforward when manchester united breezed into a 3—0 lead. they took the lead through scott mctominay in the first half then harry maguire needed 2—0 just before half time with an excellent header. then after the break bruno fernandes made it 3—0 so all looked very straightforward for manchester united but then we saw one of the

great fa cup comebacks. it started with 20 minutes left of normal time. when ellis sims got things going for coventry. his goal made it 3—1. ten minutes later it was 3—2 through callum 0'hara. you could see manchester united were starting to feeljittery. deep into stoppage time, coventry city were awarded a penalty after a manchester united handball. step forward right who coolly made it 3—3 from the penalty spot. cue pandemonium amongst the coventry fans. into extra time where coventry fans. into extra time where coventry city had a couple of fantastic chances to snatch victory, they hit the bar and also had a goal ruled out by var right at the end of extra time but it went to a penalty
7:34 pm
shoot—out. manchester united went first. cassie mido saw his penalty saved. so at that point it was an initiative to coventry city but after that initial mess, coventry city went and missed two penalties. the second from their captain which went rocketing into the crowd. so at that point the initiative was handed back to manchester united. those two coventry city messes from the penalty spot and it was down to hoyland to try and finally sealed victory for manchester united from the penalty spot which he died. cue celebrations for manchester united but they made hard work of that. a terrific and amazing performance from coventry city, beaten but utterly brilliant. when the players went over to their fans in the stand behind me, you could see the tears and so many eyes. one of the most

forcing jack butland into action. but for all their efforts they could not find a way through and rangers saw dessers get the second of the game just 12 minutes before the end. there was a final flurry of chances for either side but no more goals to be had. they started with the right mentality, they wanted to score fast. we put a lot of attention to that. we did that the same way with ross county. and we did it and we showed more composure with the ball. frustrated and disappointed with the outcome because l frustrated and disappointed with i the outcome because i want to win. that is the overriding - emotion at the moment. the game got off to a terrible j start, we cannot lose an early cheap goals like we did. it is all set up for may the 25th, the first old firm scottish cup final since 2002.

there were four games in the premier league today with liverpool taking all three points home from craven cottege after they beat fulham 3—1. the vistors went ahead after trent alexander—arnold curled in a superb free—kick, but timmothy castagne levelled, before ryan gravenberch scored his first premier league goal, and diogojota sealed the win for liverpool. next up for liverpool is everton in a merseyside derby on wednesday night. there was some controversy after the early match. nottingham forest were dealt a blow in their fight to stay in the premier league, losing 2—0 to everton. but they were so furious at three penalty appeals being turned down that they tweeted an astonishing post, accusing the var official of being a luton fan, therefore having a vested interest in forest dropping points. here is that tweet in full...
7:39 pm
the football association say they are aware of the post and are investigating. the bbc has contacted the pgmol for comment. well, as for the game itself, everton took three vital points from their bottom of the table clash with forest, is there these goals gave everton the win. both clubs suffered premier league points deductions these that make the season. idrissa gueye and this dwight mcneil long range goal gave everton the win against fellow strugglers forest. both sides have suffered premier league points deductions this season, but this win means everton have now moved five points clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand.

but the visitors are now dangeously close to the drop zone and forest manger nuno espirito santo was clearly unhappy with the decisions on the pitch today. some very poor decision of anthony taylor, very poor decision of var. very poor decision and it is happening to us over and over again. no, it's difficult to tell the players to ignore and keep on going because it's very clear. as a club we made a formal complaint saying that we would like to change the var situation — they didn't do it and then it was here to see so it's not good. aston villa have moved a step closer to finishing in a champions league spot after coming from behind to beat bournemouth 3—1. villa conceeded a penalty in the first half hour, but then scored three to ensure unai emery remain in 4th, 6 points clear of tottenham, who have 2 games in hand. there were seven goals in the crystal palace match against west ham with oliver glasner*s side scoring four in the first half hour, as they thrashed the hammers 5—2 at selhurst park. jean—philippe mateta getting two of the palace goals. they're now 14th in the league after this win and last weeks against liverpool. there were remarkable scenes
7:41 pm
at ewood park as two goalkeeping errors helped sheffield wednesday jump out of the championship drop—zone at birmingham's expense. it was aynsley pears in the blackburn goal, rushing out of his area to clear this long ball to defender dominic hyam. however, he couldn't get back in time and the ball fell to josh windass, who lobbed pears to give the owls a much—needed lead. blackburn got a goal back but two goals in the second—half for wednesday including this bizarre pears own goal sees them move out of the bottom three for the first time since the opening day of the season. each side have two games remaining. in the wsl, manchester city have moved to the top of the table above chelsea after beating west ham 5—0. it's city's 13th league win in a row. arsenal are third after beating leicester 3—0, while manchester united drew 2—2 with tottenham. let's take a look at some

of the other sports news stories making the headlines. rory mcilroy has tee'd off at the rbc heritage in south carolina and is currently eight shots off the lead. scottie scheffler*s great form continues — after winning last week's masters, the american tops the leaderboard on 16 under. the final round of the women's chevon championship — the first major of the year — is also underway — you can follow both tournaments on the bbc sport website. world number four elena rybakina has won her third title of the year, beating marta kostyuk in straight sets 6—2, 6—2 to win the stuttgart 0pen, following her wins in brisbane and abu dhabi. casper ruud has beaten stefanos tsitsipas to win the barcelona 0pen 7—5, 6—3. it comes just seven days after tsitsipas beat the norwegian in the monte—carlo masters final. this is ruud's first atp title of the season, despite having played in three finals prior to barcelona.

tadej pogacar has won the liege—bastogne—liege bike race, marking the end of the spring classics. the slovenian blew the opposition away with a solo break 30 km from the finish. britain's tom pidcock was one of the pre—race favourites, but could only nmanage 10th place after a mechanical problem. it's always an incredible atmosphere at the london marathon and today a record number of people took part with 50,000 thought to have completed the historic route. and there was a record broken in the elite races with kenya's peresjepchirchir setting a new women's only time as she stormed to victory. in the men's, britain's emile cairess and mahamed mahamed came third and fourth. joe wilson was there. away they go!

50,000 competitors, 50,000 reasons — the london marathon stretches human expectations in all sorts of ways. fancy dress on, phone out and no slip—ups. impressive, but pace yourself at cutty sark with 20 miles left. in london, the elite women run separately. no male pacemakers often makes the racing intense. they are jostling a little, a huge push there from peres jepchirchir. here goes kenya's peresjepchirchir, making her move on the mall. then it was about the clock. she was chasing and beating the world record in the women's only marathon by almost a minute. 2:16.16 — can you believe it? oh, my goodness! i am so happy for today's victory. i was not expecting to run a world record. i knew we will run, but i was not expecting to be me. catherine debrunner stretched six minutes clear of the field to win the women's wheelchair race. her swiss compatriot, marcel hug, still in a class of his own, to take the men's race
7:45 pm
for a sixth time. now, can you lead the way in your 40s? kenenisa bekele for a while did just that. in the end, kenya's alexander mutiso munyao was a clear victor — two hours four minutes. east africa continues to dominate this race. but look in third and fourth. two british runners, emile cairess and mohamed mohamed, the best day of their careers. third and fourth, two british men in the london marathon, that is brilliant. and the streets were left to thousands more doing it their way — often for charity, sometimes forfun, always in the unique spirit this event revives and extends. this is sport's ultimate shared experience. this is sport's ultimate shared experience. this is the same finishing line for everyone. when it comes to prize—money, there is equality. these four winners all earn the same and thus the marathon advances.

max verstappen annihilated the competition to win the chinese grand prix. the dutchman was in a league of his own again — even over his team—mate sergio perez — in a race punctuated by two mid—race safety cars in quick succession. safety cars broke up red bull's cruise to a one—two finish, shuffling perez behind mclaren's lando norris and ferrari's charles leclerc. the mexican soon picked off leclerc but norris drove an exceptional final stint to hold on to second ahead of perez. formula 1 back in shanghai, the track put on pause since covid—19. the last race here was five years ago and now this sport has one man at the front. in 2019, max verstappen was breaking through, now he was on pole for the fifth race out of five. so much has changed with this track's record holder as well. lewis hamilton has won here

the champion and thenjackjones sent home the world number 11. it has been an eventful day. lots to enjoy. it certainly has, it just shows the strength and depth of the game of the qualifiers, they are not the underdogs in the matches even though occasionally they don't perform but generally you have tough players to overcome. no worries forjudd trump, quite serene progress for him against hossein vafei. yes, we were told it - would be a topical encounter but he showed class. some really close frames but he got the better of hossein _ and that was the difference at the end of the match, i judd trump looks in great form. he has a lot of confidence l and one of the big players. you would have expected the odd century or two from judd trump. but top break of 77, it will not worry him, i would imagine. not at all. he was pretty clinical and brilliant yesterday.
7:49 pm
he was pretty clinical and brilliant yesterday. he was stealing two frames which broke the back of the match. we thought that hossein vafaei would put up more of a fight. but he will have another day. one of the startling score lines was the progress from young joe 0'connor on his debut against mark selby. the two lads from leicester. what marked this performance as something special? he just looked very calm. he kept up the tradition - of a debutante at the world championship since 77, - he looked as cool as a cucumber, like he had been there all these years. - he played superbly well. he put one of the best players under a lot of pressure. - yes, two centuries thrown in there as well. if there is anybody capable of turning this round it would be selby, but does he look
7:50 pm
like doing so? not at the moment but that can change from session to session. it may be difficult for him to play against his friend and practice partner. that is sometimes worst draw for somebody but he has to up his game. joe has to maintain a standard to follow over the line it feels. well that is tomorrow afternoon for that conclusion. lots of professional footballers have hobbies outside of their sport. gareth bale famously liked golf, eric cantona has released a debut album and vinnyjones is now an established actor. well, in the women's game, england and bayern munich's georgia stanway is trying her hand at being a tattoo artist. liam macdevitt travelled to germany to watch her etch her first ink. tattooing has become a big part of my life. have you done one on a person yet? today will be the first. i moved to munich just after the euros. i was ready for something new. i can feel myself shaking. is this worse than the euros? this is worse.
7:51 pm
good to see you. hello. glad to be back in munich? yes, welcome back. last time i was here you had been learning to tattoo. how has it been going? it has gone more serious after the last few weeks. hgppy happy for you to be joining. i just thought we would get some food first and we would walk to the studio. i heard you were paying. i have always had an interest in tattooing, i have a lot myself. it is something i liked in terms of how they look and like planning and what would look cool. they speak german. thank you so much. i moved to munichjust after the euros because i was ready for something new, something i wanted to do

7:53 pm
like an escape from football. have you done one on a person yet? the plan today is to put one on linus's leg. this will be your first tattoo? yes. the design i chose was a plant pot with some flowers. i chose that design because it is three and one, 31 which is my bayern number, i am born on the third of the first and it has a connection with linus. we are done. come on, you can take a seat. it gets real now. everything ok so far? yes. when i first got prepared, the stencil was on linus and it was go time. i was so nervous. linus, get comfortable. you might be here for a while. i am ready.

7:55 pm
ah! you can see it looks good. that was your first tattoo. when did you get your first? just after i turned 18. it was keira grassed me in, her mum saw hers first and she said to my mum, georgia has got one as well. i think it was after an england game. i am happy with the shape, really happy. nearly done. ready? finished. i hope so. i think i am happy with it. hopefully linus is. i am really happy with myself and i am actually proud of myself. an unbelievable feeling to get to this point. really, it is the best first tattoo i have ever seen. i you have done a really good job. i am honest. thank you very much. no problem. i think i have massively changed moving here. i feel a lot more confident in myself until i am. i have become more open to things. i throw myself into anything.
7:56 pm
how are you feeling? give me the other leg, go again. that's all from sports day, goodbye. hello there, good evening. the sunshine has a little kick to it for the second half of april. feeling pleasantly warm in the best of the sunshine. best spots are the western spots, this was northern ireland earlier today, but towards the north—east, it is chilly with a brisk north—easterly wind. temperatures struggling here and will continue to do so, we will be in this chilly air mass through the rest of the week so temperatures below the seasonal average. towards the end of the working week, low pressure will scoop in milder air from the south—west. it will be wet and windy but milder. keep an eye on the forecast.
7:57 pm
high pressure for the uk today, lots of dry weather, drifting further northwards and westwards. this warm front bringing outbreaks of rain into northern england as we head through the night. behind the front in the north and west, a milder night than last night, coastal and hill fog around. ahead of the front in east anglia, still chilly with clear skies and perhaps a touch of frost tomorrow morning. a bright start here, then our warm front pushes south and east, cloud will overtake that. quite chilly and damp. and there will be outbreaks of rain moving south across the midlands and into eastern wales and central and southern england by the end of the day. northern ireland cloudier and cooler tomorrow but scotland is looking dry and there will be some decent long spells of sunshine as well in the central belt, 16 celsius. following on behind the warm front is a cold front so we will see chilly conditions across the northern half the uk into tuesday morning. milder in the south under the cloud.
7:58 pm
more sunshine on tuesday. a lot of dry weather, a quiet day of weather but a brisk northerly wind again bringing a cold feeling of conditions, brisk winds off the north coast. brighter skies likely towards the west once again. into wednesday, we see showers out towards the east, turning more unsettled as the week moves on into the weekend but also milder so temperatures will start to climb a little further. bye— bye.
