the us, britain and jordan, were among the countries involved in israel's defence. some of the missiles were intercepted outside earth's atmosphere. some supporters of the iranian government in tehran celebrate the attack — iran warns israel not to retaliate. and i am lyse doucet injerusalem. all eyes are on the wall cabinet. the big question hanging over this crisis, what will israel do next? president biden says he'll agree a diplomatic response to the attack with other g7 leaders. the united nations security council will hold an emergency meeting later. this is the scene live injerusalem. as benjamin netanyahu convenes his war cabinet, the region waits for israel's response.
2:01 pm
hello, i'm lewis vaughanjones. a crucial couple of hours coming up as international diplomacy as the world looks to israel to ask what happens next? what response, if any, there will be from israel. we will keep you across the diplomacy. let's take a quick look at exactly what happened overnight. the explosions overjerusalem, overthe happened overnight. the explosions overjerusalem, over the skies as israel. some 300 drones and missiles launched towards israel. israel say 99% of them were intercepted and destroyed. notjust over the skies of israel. this isjordan, the allies helped us, uk, france, also

involved in shooting down objects from the sky that as well. these are the skies over syria, damascus. israel says, as to the damage, a military base was hit, there was damage there, no deaths or casualties. 0ne young girl in hospital, though. this picture shows the iron dome, one of the ways in which israel was defending itself. these pictures are from iran and tehran, some supporters that are out on the streets celebrating the attack full stop in the eyes of many in iran, this was in retaliation for an attack is widely believed to be from israel on the consulate in syria in damascus. ijust want to show you the map here so you get an idea of the scale and the geography. you can see the distance between

them. this was the first time that iran has launched direct attack on israel from its own soil. for a full picture of what happened, here is my colleague. after days of threats, the attack. more than 300 iranian drones and missiles directed at israel. injerusalem at around 2am, the air—raid sirens went off. this was the view from my hotel as the israeli military shot down iranian objects in the sky. but the attack wasn't a surprise. for almost two weeks, iran telegraphed what it was planning to do. a response to this air strike on its diplomatic compound in damascus that killed several military advisers. it blamed israel for the attack, saying this was the equivalent to a strike on its own soil. but when its missiles and drones did come, most were intercepted by the israeli army. there was only minor damage to one

military base in the south. the us military helped intercept the drones and missiles that also came from iraq and yemen and raf jets were sent to the region. translation: the iranian threat meets the idf's aerial _ and technological superiority, combined with a strong coalition which together has downed the vast majority of threats. we have intercepted 99% of the threats towards israeli the territory. we have intercepted 99% of the threats towards israeli territory. this is a very important strategic achievement. this morning in israel, relief... the situation is really frightening, because we are afraid of what happens, a lot of bombing, and... aircraft that are coming. ..but also calls for revenge. "i think that iran's attack should not go quietly," this woman says. "we have to respond." what happened last night was unprecedented. for the first time ever,
2:05 pm
a direct iranian attack on israel, marking a major escalation in the middle east. but things can get worse. allies are urging restraint and israel says it is analysing its options. president biden spoke with prime minister netanyahu overnight and reaffirmed america's iron clad commitment to israel. but from the commander—in—chief of iran's armed forces, a warning. a large response if there is an israeli retaliation. back in israel, things seem to be getting back to normal. the airspace that was shut last night has re—opened and the airport is back up and running. but many wonder how, or if, this country will respond. hugo bachega, bbc news, jerusalem. with me is our defence correspondentjonathan beale. just talk us through the calculation

made by a run here and what you make of the nature of the strike? the first thing to — of the nature of the strike? the first thing to say, _ of the nature of the strike? tue: first thing to say, it of the nature of the strike? tte: first thing to say, it was telegraphed so they knew it was coming. they have preparations in place, both israel and the us, so the us has had a carrier strike group in the red sea dealing with houthi missiles being fired from yemen. so they have had practice. then clearly israel has had practice with its iron dome, with rockets fired on a regular basis and at the same time, from gaza into israel over a number of years. so i think iran would have known that there is a defence systems were up and running and that they would take out quite a lot of what they were firing. it is more difficult to take out a ballistic missile then it is to take out a drone. but israel has layered their defences, so it doesn'tjust have the iron dome,
2:07 pm
which is the shorter range targets. it also has arrow two and three to take out ballistic mile soils —— missiles. they would have known that this capacity was there. that said, iran does have an arsenal of missiles and drones which it has been providing to other proxies but its own massive arsenal, which could have overwhelmed the defences of both the us in the region and israel. but they didn't so much we are being told, most are being shot down. it seemed one or two may have made their way through. i think there was a calculation by iran. it's a gamble to work out what israel might do next. the us has made clear it is not going to respond against iran directly but the question is, what will israel do next? ~ ., the question is, what will israel do next? ~ . . the question is, what will israel do next? . , the question is, what will israel do next? . ., , , ., next? what about the response of the allies? you mentioned _

president biden saying, iron clad guarantee for israel plasma guarantee, president biden in an election year does not want to see an escalation of this conflict. he is already going to deal with warships with houthi rebels firing missiles. he has to worry about what israel is doing in gaza, what the reaction of hezbollah might be. what iran might do, that tit—for—tat that might happen. it sounds to me like israel is taking time and it does not necessarily mean there will be an immediate response. jonathan, thank ou an immediate response. jonathan, thank you so _ an immediate response. jonathan, thank you so much _ an immediate response. jonathan, thank you so much for— an immediate response. jonathan, thank you so much for talking - an immediate response. jonathan, thank you so much for talking us i thank you so much for talking us through the context in details and responding to that breaking news for us. time to head straight over to jerusalem. my colleague lyse doucet is there. ~ ., jerusalem. my colleague lyse doucet is there. ~ . ., ., , is there. waiting for there to be erha -s is there. waiting for there to be perhaps some _ is there. waiting for there to be perhaps some indication - is there. waiting for there to be perhaps some indication after.

here's the map as we see that transition in 2a hours from the calm conditions we have had recently to this big low sitting on top of us, dragging in colder air from the northern climes and making it feel colder than it recently has been. 0nto the forecast — temperatures in the middle of the afternoon hovering around the mid—teens in the southeast of the country, barely making double figures across the north, where we already have showers sweeping across. the winds are freshening and the showers through the night generally confined to more northern and western areas. towards the end of the night, perhaps reaching central england but the southeast will stay dry. north or south, temperatures up to eight celsius in most major towns and cities. tomorrow, a band of showers sweeping across the country, gusty winds, showers could be torrential with hail and thunder,
