six people dead at a shopping mall in sydney is terror—related. they have yet to formally identify the suspect, but they say the ao—year—old was known to officials. eight people are being treated in hospital, including a nine—month—old baby. police say the lone attacker moved around the westfield mall indiscriminately stabbing people. and our other main story: iran says it's seized an israeli—linked vessel in the strait of hormuz and is transferring it to its territorial waters. four foui’ passengers four passengers stranded on a cable car in turkey have been rescued. the cable car was immobilised when it crashed into a pole, killing —— and many were involved in the rescue. now on bbc news, sportsday.
7:31 pm
thank you. good evening. hello and welcome to a bumper sportsday this saturday night. coming up on the programme: what a finish to the grand national, as the joint favourite, i am maximus, storms to victory at aintree. but who will win the race for the green jacket? it's not looking like rory mcilroy*s year yet again. we'll have the latest from augusta on day three of the masters. it's pep guardiola and manchester city leading the race for the premier league — too good for luton, and two points clear of arsenal and liverpool for now. also coming up on sportsday this saturday night: jumping for joy. emma raducanu delivers in the billiejean king cup again, taking great britain past the french on clay and into the finals. and charging towards a sixth consecutive six nations title —
7:32 pm
no stopping england, as they thrash scotland in edinburgh. welcome along. thank you forjoining us. the masters golf and premier league to come. it's also been a big day for stockport and wrexham. all that to come, but we start at aintree and the grand national, and what a finish it was! i am maximus, the 7—1 joint favourite, winning it forjockey paul townend and trainer willie mullins. it was an irish one, two, three and four. our sports news correspondent laura scott was watching it all. a really nail—biting finish, coming to the last fence, it really looked like anyone could win it. and again, it has gone to ireland. they trained their first four home in the big race. but the atmosphere here
7:33 pm
is just dying down, or so racegoers have had a thrilling day and we know the grand national is always a race that attracts hundreds of millions of people worldwide, tuning into the race. and in the build—up, there had been a lot of attention on equine welfare, a number of changes had been made to the race to try to make it safer. but the spotlight was really on the sport today. and from the moment that the turnstiles were open and people started arriving, the anticipation for the big race was really building. just like those who watch it, the grand national always has colourful stories. but even with just 32 runners to choose from, finding the winner is never easy. this iconic race is viewed around the world. but with spectacle comes scrutiny. in a bid to slow things down, they were meant to start standing still. some were keen to get going, though. and he has let them go. so we're off and racing.
7:34 pm
the first fence was closer — another effort to improve safety — but it proved the exit point for last year's winner, corach rambler. at the halfway point, 30 were still in it. but at the chair, two jockeys were unseated. as the race neared its conclusion, the british horses led the way. but coming down to the last, it was impossible to call. crowd favourite jockey rachael blackmore came to the front, but 30 fences and four miles later, i am maximus launched a late attack. it is i am maximus who leads home the gladiators! fighting off his rivals for his all—conquering trainer, willie mullins, continuing ireland's dominance of the sport. 21 horses in all finished, and there was welcome news too that there had been no fallers. lifting the iconic trophy, there was no question billionaire ownerjp mcmanus and his family had been entertained. well, willie mullins has had an extraordinary season and fielded eight runners in today's race — a quarter of the field — so he had a pretty good chance of winning today.
7:35 pm
but he has had such a good season. but winning this race clearly meant a huge amount to him. he's had to wait nearly 20 years to win it again, after his first win in the race in 2005 with hedgehunter. and i spoke to him after the race and i asked him what it meant to win it again. i mean, to win a grand national, it's the first sort of race you see on tv and everyone wants to win a grand national. it's the introduction tojump racing. i remember the last time i won it, i was on cloud nine for the year. i expect to be the same this time. paul townend — winning rider, jp mcmanus — winning owner, what a team! and what about the race itself, how it panned out? well, i was trying to watch some of our horses and i thought watching paul all the time, i thought he got a bit far back. but paul never panics and the horse
7:36 pm
was only barelyjumping his fences, and i thought he was a bit low on one or two. but i think that's what you need for aintree. if you jump too extravagantly, you lose too much ground and energy. so he just crawled his way around on the inside and saved ground everywhere. terrific ride. and then i could see paul looking for room, and when i saw paul looking round for room, i said, he must think he has a lot in the tank, because he's looking to go forward, trying to find the best horse to follow through. and sure enough, when the gap opened, he moved off the rail and sent him on after the last. i mean, the horsejust took off. it was extraordinary to be able to do that after four miles, in a steeplechase on this ground. absolutely extraordinary. in the end, he won it pretty comfortably. sum up how you felt when he crossed the line. i think i was just hoarse from shouting, and i never shout. i barely show emotion when any horses win a race, but i just sort of let go! well, behind i am maximus,
7:37 pm
we had a second place for delta work and trainer gordon elliott, and third place for rachael blackmore. the best of the british—trained horses was kitty's light, for trainer christian williams. and many people here thought that horse was going to win. and wouldn't that have been poignant? because his daughter betsy is undergoing cancer treatment? but it wasn't to be. and corach rambler unseated his jockey at the very first fence. but tonight, i think a lot of people will feel a sense of relief that after a number of changes were made to the race, all of the horses returned to their stables and there were no fatalities. that is one of the biggest successes of the day. laura scott, at aintree. from the big race at aintree to the race for the green jacket at augusta. it's the american*s scottie scheffler, bryson dechambeau and max homa sharing the lead at the halfway stage. they begin their third rounds soon. imminently. tommy fleetwood matt
7:38 pm
fitzpatrick well under way. as is tiger woods, who made the cut for a record 24th consecutive time. he teed at a quarter to six and has dropped back to four—over par. rory mcilroy went out earlier. picked up a little after a difficult star. three over par overall. —— difficult start. this is the latest leaderboard. in the next five minutes, they will begin their third rounds. they are all three two clear of nicolai hojgaard and collin morikawa four under so he has picked up a shot through the fourth hole. tommy fleetwood and danny willett would work to do at the bottom of the leaderboard. you can keep a cross with it all on the bbc sport website. —— keep across it all.
7:39 pm
next to the race for the premier league — they're trying to win it for the fourth time in a row and manchester city are top of the table tonight, after putting five past luton. a routine win for pep guardiola, especially after an early own goal put them in front. kovacic, haaland, doku and gvardiol also on the score sheet. 5—1, it finished. ahead of arsenal and liverpool's games tomorrow, goalscorer mateo kovacic was asked how it feels to be involved in a rare three—horse race for the title. amazing, amazing. i think it's entertaining, three amazing teams, always, liverpool and arsenal doing great, as we are doing as well. so it will be tough until the end and let's see who will have the strongest nerves until the end. the race for european football next season is heating up too. but tottenham's hopes of finishing in the top four have taken a hit, after they were thrashed 4—0 at newcastle who, in turn, have done their hopes of qualifying for the europa league a power of good. drew savage was watching.
7:40 pm
newcastle united almost couldn't believe their luck, and despite a lengthy injury list, eddie howe's side sent the home fans home happy with a ruthless, clinical performance. spurs had the best of the first—half hour, but their afternoon was perhaps summed up by timo werner*s attempt to convert brennanjohnson*s excellent cross. newcastle took the lead, after a mistake from the normally hugely reliable spurs defender. van de ven. 0h, he's fallen over! and the celebrations for that had barely finished when this happened, just over a minute and a half later. anthony gordon left micky van de ven on the deck again, and spurs reeling. history repeats itself in the blink of an eye! there are usually goals in this fixture. this fixture last produced a 0—0 draw in 1971. van der wen could not stop alexander isak scoring another goal.
7:41 pm
his 17th this season. ange postecoglou said his spurs side much conviction and they forgot to mark one of the biggest players on the pitch. joy on tyneside, but not for tottenham. it's a tough one. a bit raw at the moment. but credit to newcastle, they were really good today, but we never really got to grips with the game. you know, we kind of weren't able to sort of execute pretty much any of the stuff we usually do. so credit to them, but we've just got to take that. i think we showed today that we can still be a very efficient team, ruthless with our attacking, very diligent, as i said, and compact. everyone did theirjobs from a defensive perspective, which isn't easy against a quality team like tottenham. so everything came together
7:42 pm
and we deservedly won. the late game has just finished, bournemouth drawing 2—2 with manchester united. thisjustin kluivert goal put bournemouth ahead for the second time just before the break, after bruno fernandes made it 1—1. and it was the portuguese midfielder who equalised again for united 20 minutes into the second half to make it 2—2. so points shared. frustration for nottingham forest and their push to avoid the drop, morgan gibbs—white on the scoresheet for them at the city ground, but nuno espirito santo thwarted by his former side wolves, who ensured they left with a point. a 2—all draw. forestjust a point clear of the bottom three. brentford beat bottom side sheffield united 2—0 to get their first win in ten league games and ease their relegation fears. burnley were held i—all by brighton, keeping them six points from safety. celtic are four points clear at the top of the scottish premiership tonight, after a 3—0 win over st mirren — all the goals coming in the second half. that gives them daylight from rangers, but they have
7:43 pm
played two games more. third—placed hearts beat livingston 4—2, kilmarnock were 2—0 winners at stjohnstone, whilst the points were shared at aberdeen and motherwell. after leicester's defeat at plymouth, leeds had the chance to go top of the championship today, but that is not what happened at elland road, their unbeaten run at home coming to an end, thanks to sammie szmodics* goal eight minutes from the end. what a season he's having! how crucial these three points could be for blackburn and their fight for survival. elland road, shell—shocked, with leeds having dominated the game. they remain third, a point behind leicester, in second, having played a game more. and it's ipswich who are top of the championship tonight, but only by a point. they too failed to win. i—all, the final score, against middlesbrough side at portman road. southampton, in fourth, scored a 99th—minute winner to beat watford. west brom beaten by sunderland. norwich, in sixth, i—0 winners at preston. a big win for birmingham, a point clear of the bottom three,
7:44 pm
after a 3—0 victory over coventry. nothing settled in the championship today, nor in league one — the champagne remains on ice for the leaders, portsmouth, who drew i—all with bolton. but playing in league one next season will be stockport county, who've beaten morecambe 2—0 to win promotion from league two at edgeley park. and ryan reynolds and rob mcelhenney have delivered the sequel — having jumped from the national league last season, wrexham are now promoted to league one, after a 6—0 win over forest green rovers. much more reaction to that, and the rest of the day's football, on the bbc sport website. time now for some of the day's other sport stories. england bowler liam livingstone took one wicket, and all—rounder sam curran two for punjab kings, but their contributions weren't enough to avoid a three—wicket defeat to rajastan royals in the indian premier league. it will be an all—spanish front row for moto gp*s grand prix of the americas this weekend. maverick vinales smashed the lap
7:45 pm
record at the circuit of the americas by half a second, beating pedro acosta and marc marquez to pole. great britain won men's and women's team pursuit gold as the final round of the track nations cup got under way in milton, canada. there was also a bronze for mark stewart in the elimination race. this weekend's event is the final opportunity for britain's track cyclists to race before this summer's paris 0lympics. a real day of exciting sport. great britain are into november's billiejean king cup finals, after a stunning 3—1 win on the clay in france. katie boulter*s defeat yesterday left victory even further out of reach, britain the underdogs going into the tie, remember.
7:46 pm
but boulter won today, as did emma raducanu again, back—to—back sensational performances from her. 0ur tennis correspondent russell fuller was courtside. this caught behind me is being rapidly pulled apart and you might be able to hear it buzzing, it has witnessed real drama. we started by finding out french number one caroline garcia would take no part in the singles. which would have hit katie boulter hard, she is a clay—court novice at the elite level and she lost and lost 12 games in a row. she was beaten on friday. she knew she would have to play well to beat the top 50 player and did exactly that, winning 7—5, 6—0. with france still the favourites for the doubles, emma raducanu almost knew that she needed to win her singles match for the second time in two days. and having dropped the first set, she once again came from behind to win in three sets, beating diane parry. 5-2 5—2 up into the deciding set.
7:47 pm
it went into a third set tie—break, in which raducanu played brilliantly, serving brilliantly, some very potent and clinical forehands, as she won that tie—break 7—1. so great britain best france, in france, on clay, 3—i, and they will take their place in the billiejean king cup finals in seville in november. yes, we look forward to that. staying with tennis. the world number one novak djokovic has been knocked out of the monte carlo masters — beaten by casper ruud in three sets in their semi—final. this, a repeat of last year's french open final — but ruud, the world number 10, coming out on top this time. didn't look like it would end that way when djokovic raced through the second set. but the decider was closer, and djokovic double faulted match point down — ruud beating him for the first time in six attempts. and ruud will play stefanos tsistsipas in the final, after he beat australian open championjannick sinner in three sets. sinner had lostjust once this season before this match
7:48 pm
and was a break up in the deciding set, but had some injury issues, so tsitsipas, a two—time winner in monaco, fought back — winning in three. england have continued their perfect start to the women's six nations, as they swept to a 46 points to nil win in scotland. they remain top of the standings, with three bonus—point wins, while scotland are fifth, after their second defeat of the championship. nick parrott reports. despite the weather, nothing could dampen the spirits in edinburgh as hive stadium welcomed a record crowd for a scottish women's rugby match. the fans almost witnessed an upset against france, but they knew taking on defending champions england would be an even tougher task. last year, they were thrashed by 58—7. this time, they faced another storm. it took england just six minutes to breach scotland's defence.
7:49 pm
they did it again soon after. this time, with a display of speed and flair before abby dow completed the move. although they couldn't convert either of the first two tries, england showed skill with the boot to further extend their lead through ellie kildunne. the weather improved for the second half, but scotland didn't. they quickly secured the bonus point try. with the game as good as won, a gap started to appear. much to the delight ofjess breach. despite going down to 14 players after a sending off for this, the visitors charged on. breach and the player of the match both claimed second tries with ease
7:50 pm
and captain marlie packer came off the bench to complete the rout. we speak about confidence and taking the handbrake off and in each game, we are just doing that little bit more to take the handbrake off and see what this england side is capable of. and each game, we seem to unlock a new strength, a new strategy and we are building for the big ones at the end. we have shown we have improved, we put in good performances against wales and france, two teams above us in the world rankings, so we are going in the right direction. today wasn't good enough and there are glimpses we have good things in us, we just let them off the hook and when a team like that gets on the front foot, it is difficult. so england continued their march towards another title, while scotland will hope they can bounce back against more equal opponents. in the day's other match, ireland beat wales by 36 points to five. bayvin parsons scored the best and last of their five tries in cork. that result takes them above scotland and italy in the table to third. wales remain at the bottom, with three defeats from three. france play italy tomorrow. harlequins are through to rugby union's champions cup semi—finals for the first time, after a dramatic 42—41 victory away to bordeaux. quins were missing joe marler and danny care, but scored six tries
7:51 pm
against the french side — tyrone green put them ahead 42 points to 36, only for bordeaux to strike back with four minutes to go, and score a sixth try of their own. bordeaux just a single point behind, so it all came down to the conversion — maxime lucu stepping up. the match in the balance. but, that, the wrong side of the post. so joy for harlequins at the final whistle. they'll play exeter or toulouse in the semis. confirmed results, a win for harlequins. saints against balls, thatis harlequins. saints against balls, that is going at around nine minutes' time. —— bulls. there's also rugby league challenge cup quarter finals taking
7:52 pm
ulster are also out after losing to clermont auvergne you. you can keep across everything over on the bbc sport website. tottenham hotspur women are set for the biggest game in their history on sunday. they've reached the fa cup semi—finals for the first time, and will be at home to leicester, as they look to earn a place in next month's final at wembley. in the last round, they shocked the three—time winners manchester city, with goalkeeper becky spencer their hero. chris slegg has been to meet her. manchester city and england's alex greenwood couldn't get past becky spencer. what a start to the shoot—out for tottenham! neither could another lioness, chloe kelly. becky spencer saves the game! and when amy james turner clinched tottenham's first—ever women's fa cup semifinal place, becky spencer wasn't even watching. i like to go from direction of the

crowd. don't look. completely face the other way, i don't want to look at anything else when i have a job to do myself. when i heard the crowd screaming and didn't hear gloves making a save, i thought, she's done it, we can celebrate now. she's been a penalty hero before, helping birmingham win the fa cup in 2012, when she saved from her now spurs team—mate drew spence. i think i saved drew's. i still remind her of that now when i sit next to her in the changing room. i think i was on the next penalty, so i thought i would have to save one because i don't want to take the fifth or the sixth penalty. tottenham hotspur stadium hosts on day's semifinal and spurs start as favourites against leicester. they are a rapidly improving side under the swedish manager robert vilahamn, who took charge last summer.
7:54 pm
first season under the manager, robert vilahamn, what has he brought to the club? we don't feel nervous going into the games because we sense he is backing us all the way and if we are trying to do the right things, he supports us, which is the main thing. it's just a calmness around the place. tottenham have a rich history in the men's fa cup, but it's fading into history. gary lineker was in the team the last time they won in 1991 and, since then, they have lost a record eight consecutive semifinals. how aware are you of that statistic and how determined are you to end thatjinx of the club? we are one club here and to get to the semis is massive for the club because it's the first time in the women's side we have been there. so really, we just want to do the club proud and do the fans proud as well. so just give them something to look forward to if we can get a place at wembley. whether it needs more penalty heroics or not, spurs are one win away from taking on united or chelsea in the women's fa cup final on may the 12th. nearly out of time. a reminder, i am

maximus, the 7—1 joint favourite has won the grand national forjockey paul townend and trainer willie mullins. there is reaction to that on the bbc sport website. you can follow what is happening on day three of the masters golf. manchester city are top of the premier league tonight after 5—1 win over luton. that's all for now from me in the team, goodnight. —— me and the team. hello. well, it's been really quite warm in the last few days, with temperatures exceeding 20 celsius. today, that warmth generally reserved for southern and south—eastern parts of england. and the outlook is pointing to very much the opposite — colder weather on the way. if we look at the satellite picture, you can see a gentle drift of the clouds from the south—west here. but the colder air is waiting in the north atlantic, and that's where the shower clouds
7:56 pm
will come from as well. and in fact, over the next few days, the colder air will have its origin in the arctic. so a real chill on the way for some of us. i think we'll feel that chill particularly on monday. 0k, back to the here and now, and evening temperatures will have still hovered around the high teens in east anglia and the south east, but already, only single figures across most of scotland. and through this evening and overnight, we'll have clear skies across the bulk of the uk. but we will also have showers for a time crossing scotland, some of them, wintry across the hills. the winds not particularly strong overnight. fairly chilly in the morning on sunday, perhaps a touch of frost in the sheltered glens of scotland. and further south, in our bigger towns and cities, temperatures in the range of, say, 6 to 8 celsius. so sunday's weather forecast — lots of sparkling sunshine right from the word go. a beautiful start to the day, but then clouds will bubble up. first, the small fairweather clouds and then the bigger shower clouds, and showers are certainly possible across more northern and north—western parts of the country. and look at the temperatures —
7:57 pm
15 in london, 10 degrees in glasgow. that is the average for the time of the year. it'll feel colder on monday, with this low pressure barrelling across the uk. look at the isobars and the winds coming in from the north. a cold, cutting wind, really a very chilly wind for some of us, bringing showers, also hail and thunder possible, but also, some sunny spells in—between. and the temperatures, well, below par for the time of the year, with this air originating from the northern climes. possibly around about 12 degrees in london, and single figures across northern ireland, scotland and parts of northern england as well. is it going to stay chilly for most of the week? it is, to an extent, with further showers on the way. but i think as we head towards thursday and friday, there is an indication that there will be another change in the wind direction, and we'll see those values rising once again just a bit. bye— bye.
