multiple stabbings took place. a man entered the shopping centre with a knife, five people were killed, several others are in hospital right now with serious critical conditions. you can see from these live pictures, armed police presence still there. the area is still in lockdown. we don't know the motive for this attack but police saying, as things stand, they believed that he acted alone and they don't believe there is a continuing threat. as we just look at the various different, three different lives feeds we have on the scene right now. i will take you back a couple of hours to this afternoon when there was still daylight and we have these pictures of people basically being evacuated from the shopping centre. you can imagine a hugely busy shopping centre,

hundreds of people inside, and as soon as the alarm was raised, police managed to get hundreds of people out of that shopping centre. now, nearby when this happened, about 3:20 p m local time in sydney, when that happened a police officer, a single police officer was nearby. she went into the shopping centre and approached the man with the knife. when the man with a knife phrased it, she discharged her weapon and shot him —— a man with a knife raised it. we have heard since from the prime minister that this police officer acted heroically and no doubt saved lives, saved a further loss of life. we do know that five people were killed at the scene in the shopping centre and several others, including a young

earlier this afternoon with my two children and thankfully we are all safe but it was a terrifying experience for anyone that was there today. thousands of people that heard the gunshot rang out, obviously more so those that witnessed the knife wielding perpetrator and sadly, as we have learned in recent hours, there had been five who have sadly died. so this is not something we are used to in australia. this is not the australia i know and this is extraordinarily sad on so many levels, but particularly for those families whose loved ones will be with them this evening. just families whose loved ones will be with them this evening.— families whose loved ones will be with them this evening. just talk us throu~h with them this evening. just talk us through again. _ with them this evening. just talk us through again. if— with them this evening. just talk us through again, if you _ with them this evening. just talk us through again, if you can, - with them this evening. just talk us through again, if you can, what - with them this evening. just talk us through again, if you can, what it . through again, if you can, what it was like being there, what you noticed, what you saw, what you heard. it.

so professionally and so well. a mother and young child were responded to passers—by, and there are a lot of stories like that, sadly five people lost, nine people stabbed and five confirmed dead. the knifeman also shot dead when confronted by that lone, very brave lone police officer so that means we don't have any mate information yet. please no doubt are privatising identifying him, looking for personal effects including a mobile phone and trying to look at online footprint, trying to figure out motive and background. the response been very professional. no speculation aloud, nothing is ruled in or out and i think that is a measure of maturity, there might have been much speculation and panic but this is a very calm and professional response from all. let's pick up on that point because in the last 90 minutes or so we heard that update from police new south wales saying, as things stand,
10:40 am
they are confident this person acted alone and there was no continuing threat. of course that was a current situation, things can change but that was a very, very clear statement from the police and also saying there was nothing at the scene to indicate a motive or ideology. can you talk to was a bit about that, praising, what the thought would be behind putting it like that? the thought would be behind putting it like that? . . . , like that? the police have any conscience — like that? the police have any conscience at _ like that? the police have any conscience at the _ like that? the police have any conscience at the public - like that? the police have any conscience at the public will i conscience at the public will immediately wonder why someone would do this and could it be a political cause, could it be terrorism? they are very conscious of the fact it is imparted to shut down speculation and remain calm and work on the basis of fact. of responded, they must respond regardless and then they try and figure out what the motivation might be. perhaps already they already know something of the online footprint of this individual but they will only speak about it when they are ready. the sort of
10:41 am
incidents are very rare in australia so if it turned out that the person was acting on some sort of political motivation that would also be very rare. the most common kind of incident is domestic violence but that doesn't appear to be the case because the knifeman was attacking complete strangers and that is a very uncommon occurrence. sol complete strangers and that is a very uncommon occurrence. so i think given all the experience of the last decade with attacks, many attributed to terrorism, it is significant there is a level of maturity both with media and place under the responders to recognise we can speak about anything until we can confirm the fact that might establish a motive and the fact they said no one else is involved is very reassuring, although it doesn't bring back those five lives lost.— five lives lost. read barton, thank ou ve five lives lost. read barton, thank you very much _ five lives lost. read barton, thank you very much for _ five lives lost. read barton, thank you very much for coming - five lives lost. read barton, thank you very much for coming on - five lives lost. read barton, thank you very much for coming on the i you very much for coming on the programme. ladle you very much for coming on the programme-— programme. we appreciate your thou . hts. programme. we appreciate your thoughts. thank _ programme. we appreciate your thoughts. thank you. _ programme. we appreciate your thoughts. thank you. here - programme. we appreciate your thoughts. thank you. here with | programme. we appreciate your. thoughts. thank you. here with me now is reporter. _ thoughts. thank you. here with me now is reporter. bring _ thoughts. thank you. here with me now is reporter. bring us _ thoughts. thank you. here with me now is reporter. bring us up - thoughts. thank you. here with me now is reporter. bring us up to - now is reporter. bring us up to date. this now is reporter. bring us up to date. * , .,

10:50 am
and allegedly confronted the man with a knife. it is said that the man then lunged at the officer before he was fatally shot. this is the latest information that we have from the new south wales police. we are told that the officer then conducted at cpr on the alleged offender as well as other people at the scene who had suffered injuries until paramedics arrived and we know that their ambulance services arrived shortly afterwards. among those injured is a small child, just a nine—month—old, and several people had been taken to various hospitals around sydney for treatment after receiving stab wounds and other injuries in the chaos at unfolded. we have got a couple of new details about what actually happened. let's just try and put that together with the statement we have from new south wales police, that on camera briefing on the last couple of hours. it isjust briefing on the last couple of hours. it is just after three o'clock in the afternoon, in the shopping centre, a man enters and then leaves and then a short time
