on the rampage attacking people at westfield bondi junction shopping centre. several people are in hospital in a critical or serious conditions. a small child is among those injured. the attacker has been shot dead. new south wales police gave this update a short time ago. about 3:10pm a male walked into westfield bondijunction and left and returned about 320. he engaged with about nine people as he moved through the centre, it is clear during that engagement he caused harm to them. we believe by stabbing them with a weapon he was carrying. clearly a range of reports were made of the incident, police attended

promptly, a single unit officer inspector was nearby and went into the centre directed by a range of people, she confronted the offender who had moved to level five as she continued to walk quickly behind him to catch faced and raised the knife and she discharged a firearm and that person is deceased. i am advised that there are five victims who are now deceased. as a result of the actions of this offender. several people have been taken to hospital, a number in a serious critical condition and i do not have further information in relation to descriptions of those people.
10:03 am
i know one of them is a small child. as is the case when these incidents, a critical incident has been declared and investigations in relation to the matter have commenced and are continuing at the scene and a number of hospitals nearby. from preliminary inquiries it would appear that this person has acted alone, i am content that there is no continuing threat. police as i have said have commenced investigations into the matter which will continue through the evening, i do not have details of victims who have been killed nor those taken to hospital.

assessment of where things stand. the initial priority was to find out that was anybody else involved, another attacker, the police say no, they think he was a sole operator so they think he was a sole operator so the next thing is to try to find out his motive, hard because he has been shot dead but never the icy will have left atrial, they will be quickly trying to find out what has residence was, who he knows, where he has been. i have got an update i will give you from a contact of mine who is the saying westfield bondi is one of the most high—profile shopping centres with a large alphabetjewish community customer base. there is a feel not confirmed that the motivation could be middle east based by that is not confirmed and i am loved to speculate any
10:21 am
further because as the police say it is not helpful but people will be looking at a terrorism motive because the attack is similar to previous mass stabbings on multiple stabbing is we have seen and that is a parallel in terms of how it was offended off with the fishmonger pole attack in london five years ago, someone released from prison who was attending a conference and he started attacking people with a knife, killed a number of people and was fended off by a brave member of the public, to, one with a wheel task he had grabbed from the hole and in this case that is a cannibal footage during the romans, no reason
10:22 am
to not true being fended off but i also k traffic board. in cannibal heroism so others could escape, other stories of people who have rushed into a shop where the shop staff have a the doors, any attack like this is terrifying and brings to mind another symbol attack on the westgate, no connection to westfield in nairobi some years ago and in that case there were a number of gunmen, a marauding attack and that was even bloodier and very poorly handled by the police at the time. in this case the new south wales police seem to have reacted very quickly, part of this is a result of
10:23 am
the mumbai attack which lasted over two days and killed over 160 people when a number of people turned up and came down from pakistan and it prompted police including in britain to think what if that happened here in the heart of london, be simply would not have enough firepower to deal with that so there was a complete revamp and australia has done the same, that supposedly now if a terrorist attack was on a knife attack was to take place and terrorism was suspected in the heart of london police would be on the scene within eight minutes. that is the goal they have set themselves and the australian police reaction was very quick and effective. thank
