8:00 pm
days of the year for any biggest days of the year for any kind of we are starting to get closer to totality here in ohio. people are starting to get together. i can feel the anticipation building even further, butjust in terms of what would be considered a truly great eclipse, that it surely has to go down as one of the schools them. 99% of people experiencing either partially or totally, that is huge. it is one of the most memorable eclipses of all time. partly because of the sun is so intense. you can see the atmosphere so prominently, and also because so many people will be able to see it. so, you don't get that combination of things that often. it is a really big event. follows much the impact it on people
8:01 pm
as the science and the beauty of it all. . . , as the science and the beauty of it all. . ., all. pallab, something i always find astonishin: all. pallab, something i always find astonishing is _ all. pallab, something i always find astonishing is how _ all. pallab, something i always find astonishing is how long _ all. pallab, something i always find astonishing is how long we - all. pallab, something i always find astonishing is how long we have . all. pallab, something i always find i astonishing is how long we have been able to predict eclipses for as occurrences, going back even a couple of hundred years here in ohio, the last one was in 1806. there are eclipse chasers then. it is an incredibly exact and difficult science, one would imagine. it is. it noes science, one would imagine. it is. it goes like _ science, one would imagine. it is. it goes like clockwork. _ science, one would imagine. it is. it goes like clockwork. you - science, one would imagine. it 3 it goes like clockwork. you can work at one the next eclipses, the one after that and the one after that, so you can pick your hotel room so that if you're interested in doing that. but you can decide for that you want to chase eclipses or experience of the ones that occur to you naturally. but it is, as a reminder ofjust how incredible the cosmos is, and so there are so many people that, after today, whether
8:02 pm
they are experiencing totality in north america, or watching it on television, they will become inspired by what they see and want to find out more, and it is no greater advertisement for science than watching something so incredible and beautiful as this. absolutely. talking about getting the public on board, we know that there is also science projects as well, people can give insights to what happened to their pets, for example, during totality. and i do have to say, it is starting to get significantly darker here as i speak. but for the animal kingdom, this is really confusing for them. it is confusing for them and it is confusing for people as well. they will probably be a husk if there are any animals around you. they are just wondering what is happening, because nightfall is in for some time yet, but also there will be a harsh before the pups start among
8:03 pm
people. —— a hush. the whoops will start as the last rays pass through the dream, then there would be that spectacular diamond ring effect come up spectacular diamond ring effect come up on the last chink of light is a brighter than everything else. then of course the show stopper, the atmosphere that will stretch out past the men. it will hang in there sky like a shimmering black pearl in the sky. it will be a moment of great awe and a moment of celebration. it will bring people together. among the animals, i expect they will be very, very confused. fist expect they will be very, very confused-— expect they will be very, very confused. * ., ., , confused. at the end of the day, we're alljust _ confused. at the end of the day, we're alljust animals _ confused. at the end of the day, we're alljust animals and - confused. at the end of the day, we're alljust animals and are . confused. at the end of the day, i we're alljust animals and are going to be bowled over by this event. we are just ten minutes away from
8:04 pm
totality here in ohio. you're mounting that moment of the diamond ring and a connoisseur to more probable hopefully see more first from the else atmosphere. that is not always given an eclipses, that just goes to underscored how special this particular eclipses. well, the red two things that you can see for this eclipse is happening because the sun is particularly active. there are gigantic nuclear explosions that are happening all the time on the sun. if they happen close to the surface and they are particularly powerful, you will see them as little peaks coming out of them as little peaks coming out of the edge. and those peaks, even though they might seem quite small compared to the size of the sun, the other absolutely enormous. some can beat the size of the entire earth. this is something that you will only see in real life, just for a few moments, just as the eclipse is getting to you. and it is thus
8:05 pm
lasted ten minutes that is the most fun, really, because she will be noticing a gradual darkening, but that darkening will all of a sudden come in at the next few minutes, stop speeding up, and before you know it, you will see the beads, you will see the diamond ring effect. there will be cheers all around you, and then at the account owner sophia muller reveal itself in all its majesty. that is if it is not cloudy but you are. but even in parts of the country for it is cloudy, it is still incredible, because in the summer is the awesome nature of what you can see can take your mind away from all the other thing that are going on. the drop in temperature, the wind that crops up, the shadows that pass along very quickly. it is just the whole package that makes it so special and so wonderful. i'm talking about this great solar eclipse, of course, there are many
8:06 pm
times of eclipses. people might think that they have seen one fairly recently. of course, there are lunar eclipses as well, that are different. there are collapses over the water that occur fairly regularly. but this one in particular, is in a league of its own in terms of how many people can see it. how great it is. —— there are eclipses over the water. it is in a league _ are eclipses over the water. it is in a league of — are eclipses over the water. it is in a league of its _ are eclipses over the water. it is in a league of its own _ are eclipses over the water. it 3 in a league of its own because it is a total solar eclipse. one of my favourite apart from the total eclipse is the annular eclipse, four of them and is about a bit further away from the earth than normal, and so you get a bunch of light around it, so it looks like a golden ring in the sky. you can only seat using eclipse glasses, but that is a very special moment. but even partial eclipses are interesting. again, you need to eclipse glasses. that bite thatis need to eclipse glasses. that bite that is taken out of the sun, the chinese used to think that it was because a dragon was eating up the
8:07 pm
sun and that constitutes a fear until, of course, the sun reappeared as if by magic. so to something that our ancestors fine fearful and body income and fines, no doubt come as joyful as we are finding it now. you can only imagine — joyful as we are finding it now. you can only imagine the confusion for anybody, in years past, working the land, for example, suddenly finding that it had become a knight right in the middle of the day, wondering what it doesn't happen. we know that historically, people had used this as an auditory device to shore up the pub, for example. to tell a population, for example, to protect its solar eclipse, and to assert their authority, its solar eclipse, and to assert theirauthority, it its solar eclipse, and to assert their authority, it must have been incredibly confusing. i am just getting what right now, just to update people, five minutes here in ohio. we can cross over to nada

8:12 pm
havejust got word crossed for you. here in ohio, i have just got word that we are very much on the countdown. i think we are about 30 seconds out here right now. there are some fireworks going off right now. you can start to hear some cheers. it is feeling very cold. it is getting very grey. i don't know if you can just see that on this screen as i'm talking, but suddenly it's starting to look a little bit more like new year's eve as opposed to the middle of the day here in ohio. i'm just going to take a look at the end because you can hear the cheers here. everybody... cheering just taking that moment in. it is incredible. i havejust got just taking that moment in. it is incredible. i have just got to... yeah, i can see it now. i can see that corona. the stars have come out. it is a huge halo, all the way
8:13 pm
around that total solar eclipse here in ohio. and as you can perhaps see behind me, it almost looks like the most perfect sunset that you could imagine here on lake erie in ohio. despite the fact that, yes, this is the middle of the day, this is totality. families are gathered, france, a lot of excitement here. cheers ringing out, fireworks over lake erie here. it feels more like the 4th lake erie here. it feels more like the lath ofjuly, that sense of
8:14 pm
festivity, a public holiday, it almost feels like here in the united states. it is a truly exciting moment, and to fill corona just an incredible vision here. party ticket as off it, i have to say. i can even see some stars letting up what appears to be a night sky here, and the colours arejust appears to be a night sky here, and the colours are just phenomenal, as you can see. almost like a dusky sunset. so many families have been coming out, they have been having picnics. it has been a festival atmosphere, and then over the past hour, we can gradually feel at getting clear, dusky, calder, and then of course that moment of totality. and it does appear to be fairly long lasting as welcome as we were promised, hoping to see over
8:15 pm
four minutes, potentially one of the longest lasting eclipses in modern history. keep in mind, ohio hasn't seen an eclipse since 1806, a phil eclipse, i should say, in this particular part of the world. it won't see another one again for some 400 years. so, everybody standing behind me, myself as well, we are incredibly fortunate to be witnessing this moment of history. and just to tell you how dark it is, i'm looking directly at the camera right now. i can't quite see the lens. it does feel fully like it is not here right now. and everybody just taken in the moment. there were cheers. it is almost a are quite quiet now. nomia was describing a moment of all, and that is what you're feeling, just this moment of awesomeness, of being connected to something far, far bigger than just
8:16 pm
ourselves. really an amazing moment, and you can see this swimmers as well around the corona. —— you can see those flares. i have been lucky enough to see one solar eclipse before, and it is truly a breathtaking moment. and perhaps on your screen you can see those flares... and it is starting to reappear. cheering people putting the glasses back on. we saw what was described as the corona sphere. those red areas are found sun because us pallab was explaining, it is at one of its high points of activity. starting to get

the other side, perhaps you can notice the lights changing as i speak. then we will go on to niagara falls. up to the border with canada. a very rare event in terms of a continuous solar eclipse, so going across all of the states. people are really lucky this time around in america. there was a great solar eclipse of 2017, but now, we have got some 44 million people in this country who are in the path of totality. 99% of americans able to see the eclipse in some way or another. just follow that is partial or a total solar eclipse. just in those a few minutes that i have been speaking it is not fully do again. and we can go over more and listen to the countdown as my colleague nada tawfik at niagara falls which totality there. i nada tawfik at niagara falls which totality there-— totality there. i would say there are dozens _

8:22 pm
alongside the natural wonder of niagara falls. you can hear everybody is happy. there was a lot of fear that they weren't going to catch that moment of totality, such as absolute relief that they caught that. and credible just to and crediblejust to hear that reaction from nada during totality they are in niagara falls, just to wonder at the awesomeness of it all that we just experience here in ohio as well. well over four minutes of totality here on lake erie, when they were fireworks over the lake behind me, there was a cheers ringing up into the air, and then we just saw that moment of quiet as well. i think people were quite awestruck as we approach full totality. it went dark here. it is just starting to get a little bit
