5:00 pm
hello, i'm rajini vaidyanathan, welcome to verified live, three hours of breaking stories, and checking out the truth behind them. an earthquake has hit the us state of newjersey, rattling buildings in nearby new york city. the us geological survey said that the quake was magnitude 4.8. the quake was centred in lebanon newjersey. there are no reports of any damage but social media users have reported feeling the tremors from philadelphia up to new york along the coast.

this is the moment the quake prompted the temporary pausing of a un security council meeting at its new york headquarters. women stood in line for three hours to make use of it. schools normally form a spinal protection for children, a place where children can see humanitarian services and normality... g0 see humanitarian services and normality- - -— see humanitarian services and i normality. . ._ education normality... go ahead. education is... is normality... go ahead. education ism isthat— normality... go ahead. education is... is that an _ normality... go ahead. education is... is that an earthquake? - is... is that an earthquake? education — is... is that an earthquake? education is, _ is... is that an earthquake? education is, in _ is... is that an earthquake? education is, in many - is... is that an earthquake? l education is, in many ways... is... is that an earthquake? - education is, in many ways... you are making _ education is, in many ways... you are making the — education is, in many ways... you are making the ground shake. my| education is, in many ways... you i are making the ground shake. my 0k to continue? — are making the ground shake. my 0k to continue? education, _ are making the ground shake. my 0k to continue? education, in _ are making the ground shake. my 0k to continue? education, in many- are making the ground shake. my 0k| to continue? education, in many ways is life—saving. earlier i asked our new york correspondentjohn sudworth whether he felt the tremor himself. idid. i did. reports coming in from across

the city are people having experienced the shock of this earthquake. reports of buildings shaking, that is certainly what i felt here in manhattan. it lasted for some 15 or 20 seconds or so, in terms of the highest intensity shaking. i have to say, these things are rare. but not completely unknown in the city of new york. at the moment the united states geological survey in its earlier reports were suggesting the epicentre of this quake was 50 miles west of manhattan, in the state of new jersey. a magnitude quake of 4.8 in terms of its measured scale. i think reports from that side of the hudson river in the state of newjersey would suggest, residents felt it
5:03 pm
there even more intensely. but these things do happen from time to time. one as recently as january, just a 0ne as recently as january, just a couple of months ago. again, felt by residents of manhattan in the early hours of the morning. 0n residents of manhattan in the early hours of the morning. on that occasion, other people could very much feel the shot, very few reports of any real damage. qm. much feel the shot, very few reports of any real damage.— of any real damage. 0k, we have heard from _ of any real damage. 0k, we have heard from the _ of any real damage. 0k, we have heard from the mayor— of any real damage. 0k, we have heard from the mayor of - of any real damage. 0k, we have heard from the mayor of new - of any real damage. 0k, we have. heard from the mayor of new york saying there is no reports of any major impact. but what you are saying there, in san francisco you might expect to feel tremors quite regularly, but new york city, you don't expect so much? you don't, that is why _ don't expect so much? you don't, that is why it _ don't expect so much? you don't, that is why it makes _ don't expect so much? you don't, that is why it makes the _ don't expect so much? you don't, that is why it makes the news - don't expect so much? you don't, that is why it makes the news and don't expect so much? you don't, l that is why it makes the news and it certainly is at the moment. local news reports, of course, switching very quickly to this story, a huge amount of interest in it. it is a story that new yorkers see and feel themselves and experience themselves. because these things are not that frequent, of course, it is of news interest. at the moment this
5:04 pm
doesn't look like this is in any way serious for people, for viewers who live in parts of the world where these things are frequent, this would hardly register as an event. at the eastern seaboard of the united states does have mountain ranges, these things do happen. looking at the historical record, hundreds of recorded quakes in new york over the past century or so, but always very, very small and unlikely to pose anything like a real risk to residents here. if you want to stay with the earthquake, you can go to the qr code which sits beside me on the screen. that will take you straight to a live feed, live stream we are doing of continuing coverage and

that earthquake. we will be bringing new and update from the mayor of new york city. there is the podium and the new york city mayor, eric adams did say earlier the earthquake was felt at around 10.23 in the morning. 4.8 magnitude was confirmed by him as well. he said the epicentre was in lebanon in newjersey, about 50 miles from new york city. this is quite crucial, he said he encourages all new yorkers to check on your loved ones and if you feel an aftershock, drop to the floor, cover your head and can take cover under a solid piece of furniture next to an interior wall or in a doorway. he also said that so far no major life safety issues where reported or any infrastructure issues, but it is important to say that of now, both jfk and newark airports remained shut. flights are grounded at least there and they are huge hubs for
5:06 pm
international and domestic airports. it is nowjust newark airport that remains grounded in terms of flights. but that in itself is a huge blow to lots of passengers who will be flying domestically and internationally, newark airport in newjersey, but serving a lot of passengers who come into new york city.
