12:34 am
across the region due to a shortage of talent with australia, hong kong and singapore on the hunt for staff in the tech sector. we heard from karen ng. let's get more from karen ng who's with global hr platform deel, which is behind the research. we heard from karen ng. she says the overall peace in the tech sector is starting to slow down. we've seen we've recently released a state of global hiring report where we've noted there's a 57% increase in global hiring in asia itself. by global hiring, we mean businesses hiring everywhere and looking for talent anywhere. so we've seen lay—offs, as you'vejust mentioned, growing at the beginning of the year. but we've also seen a decline as the year goes by from 2010, from january 2023 to november 2023. and tell us more about sort of the main driver then for the growth of global hiring in the apac region? and where are these countries hiring from? there's a talent shortage, as you've mentioned as well, steve.
12:35 am
across asia, a lot of countries like australia, hong kong and singapore on high demand as well as talent from vietnam, india and the philippines are actually very high demand. singapore itself has seen an increase in foreign hiring coming up in our 300,000 contract that we've analysed top countries forforeign talent to be hired from. so why is there a bit of a difference then? we've seen, as you've mentioned, hiring on the increase here in this part of the world, but in other parts of the world, you know, big, significant tech companies like microsoft and google, they're letting staff go. now, why and why is that? there has been an over hiring in 2021, 2022 and even at the beginning of 2023. so businesses have been course correcting that in terms of cost measures as well as finding new technologies right to to bring efficiency to the workforce. so we've seen this, but particularly tech workers are still in high demand. so even if there are high lay—offs, what we've analysed as well is they're actually quite easily
12:36 am
hired back pretty quickly, as a matter of fact. so what's your outlook then for the rest of the year, both in this region and also other parts of the world? well, a few things. one, global hiring is on the growth. so that's what we are seeing. we also see a huge uptake in hybrid work model even after the pandemic. so this is actually on the rise and we see actually talent being hired everywhere. so again, going back to global hiring. turning to vietnam. its economy grew over 5 and a half percent in the first quarter of this year when compared to the same time last year — largely fuelled by a boom in exports. but the southeast asian nation is facing political uncertainty after president vo van thoung resigned last month becoming the second leader to leave office in just 14 months. vietnam has been attracting record foreign investment due to manufacturers diversifying away from china although ties with beijing remain close with vietnam's foreign minister arriving in the chinese capital today.

ruchir desai, fund manager at asia front capital. he says despite the apparent legal cornolle vietnam or opinions attractive to foreign investors. the president has resigned and is the second for president resigning in the past 15 months, but having said that firstly the president cosmic position in vietnam is largely ceremonial and i do not believe he has an important say in economic policy and that they direction of the country. furthermore i think it is not just about the president, but also the parliament in the print minister so in terms of the impact on foreign investment this anti—corruption investment this anti—corru ption cracked investment this anti—corruption cracked on that will be happening to the government it is been happening for almost two years and that will impact foreign investments and in
12:38 am
2023, foreign direct investments to vietnam were around $43 billion around the highest at about 5% of gdp highest at about 5% of gdp highest in the region. so safari do not see this happening is a detriment to the attractiveness of vietnam. which sectors in vietnam are doing well? if which sectors in vietnam are doing well?— doing well? if you look at what has happened _ doing well? if you look at what has happened over _ doing well? if you look at what has happened over the - doing well? if you look at what has happened over the past. has happened over the past between us and china in the geopolitical tensions between china and the us you see moving into vietnam so almost 70% of the foreign direct investments into vietnam is used to be linked to the manufacturing sector exported to other us markets the manufacturing sector is by far the biggest beneficiary of foreign direct investments into vietnam.
