the headlines. maryland police recover the bodies of two missing people who went into the water after a ship crashed into a bridge in baltimore. divers recovered to victims of this tragedy trapped within the vehicle. the un high commissioner for human rights says israel is significantly to blame for the appalling humanitarian situation in gaza, where famine is looming. the collective punishment was declared as a siege is indeed amounting to a war crime and must be dealt with as such.
12:01 am
it's eight in the morning in singapore, and eight in the evening in baltimore — where officials say there is no longer any hope of finding survivors after a bridge collapsed when it was struck by a container ship. officials have confirmed that two bodies have been recovered — and the operation is now one of *recovery* rather than *search and rescue*. these are live pictures from baltimore — you can see how the ship, the dali, remains lodged in the wreckage of the bridge. its data recorder is being examined. but the waterway — and consequently the port of baltimore — will remain closed for what officials say is an indefinite amount of time. that will hit global trade — by some measures, it's the 11th biggest port in the us, and last year, 50 billion dollars of goods, including nearly 850,000 vehicles, went through it. let's bring you now the latest details from the news conference which took place a short while ago — starting with that confirmation that two of the victims had now been recovered and formally identified. the maryland state police,
12:02 am
along with the underwater recovery teams supported by state, local and federal partners, made a tragic finding. shortly before, 10 am divers located a red pick—up truck submerged in approximately 25 feet of water in the area of the middle span of the bridge. divers recovered two victims of this tragedy trapped within the vehicle. the victims were identified as alejandro hernandez—fuentes, 35 years old of baltimore, and dorlen ronald castillo cabrera, 26 years old of dundalk. theirfamily members were notified just over an hour ago in person. at that same news conference, the governor
12:03 am
of maryland, wes moore, confirmed that there was no longer any hope of finding survivors among the remaining four missing people. today we transitioned from search and rescue to recovery. we need to bring a sense of closure and comfort to the families, and we take that very seriously. and to all the families, i say, esta contigo, simpere. less than an hour after the collapse, we had divers in the water at 2:25 am to begin search and rescue. this morning we had divers in the water starting at 6 am for search and recovery. this is not a conclusion. it's a continuation. and we take this phase just as seriously and just as personally as we took the last phase. 0ur north america correspondent gary 0'donoghue

has been in baltimore throughout the day — and he sent us this report. throughout the day, the gruesome task of recovering the bodies of those who died has continued, as their identities have begun to emerge. two names have so far been released, miguel luna was from el salvador and manuel suazo was from honduras. his brother spoke outside the family home. translation: he became a fundamental pillar - of ourfamily, a bastian so others could travel over there and get visas and everything. he was a driving force for all of us. they have been working the night shift, fixing potholes on the bridge, when authorities were alerted to the ship was veering off course. if we could stop traffic and make sure nobody is on the bridge right now. i am not sure if there is a crew up there. i want identify the foreman
12:05 am
and get them off the bridge, temporarily. but the ship hit just moments later. dispatch, the whole bridge just fell down! everybody, the whole bridge just collapsed! thoughts have now turned to the process of how best to remove the ship and clear the channel. i think the main challenge here, as you can see by the imagery on scene, is removing those large trusses and the steel from the bow of the ship. once that happens, we will have the underwater survey complete in terms of how that vessel is connected to the bridge pier, but i think once that is done, the salvage will be ready to do that in necessary action to refloat the vessel and move it. to achieve all that, the navy is supplying heavy lift crane is to clear the river and the submerged sections of the bridge. meanwhile, at least two dozen investigators have been on the ship, securing its data recorder, and have attempted to reassure the public that the containers on board aren't posing a threat
12:06 am
to public health. up close like this you can see the sheer scale of the problem facing the investigators. not only are they trying to find those that lost their lives in these frigid waters, in these choppy and rainy conditions, but also in terms of the vote, moving it and getting the bridge it is hugejob. local and national officials have vowed to protect the incomes of around 15,000 workers at the port, which is also crucial to 140,000 jobs in the wider region. this is an important port for both imports and exports. it is america's largest vehicle handling port, which is important not only for car imports and exports, but also farm equipment. in the coming months, many questions will be asked about the safety record of the dali and the construction
12:07 am
of the key bridge itself. let's bring you some pictures of the ship in baltimore currently. it is under the debris from the bridge where it crashed into. night has fallen in baltimore and we are expecting it to have a no news conference from the national transportation safety board in the us. we can show you images of that room is full as you see press and media gathering to wait for officials to come and give an update on the situation regarding the ship and how it is stuck in the debris of that baltimore bridge. we have had an update that two bodies of two people have been recovered from a red pick—up truck submerged under the waters where the francis scott key bridge collapsed. it has been informed earlier today. the operation to recover the bodies of four more people presumed dead continues so far, but we
