qualification for the knockout stage of the champions league is out of manchester uniteds hands after they were held to a 3—3 draw by galatasaray. they now have to beat bayern munich at old trafford in theirfinal group game and hope that the turkish side draw their game against copenhagen on the same night. it was an incredible game in istanbul, united led 2—0 and 3—1 but their goalkeeper andre onana should have done better with both hakim ziyech's goals that came from free—kicks. the draw means that united stay bottom of their group and even beating bayern is unlikely to be enough. the united manager refused to point the finger at his keeper. we've been together, we lose together. we win together, we lose together. and you see the progress in this team. and i take many positives of this game. in some stages, we we play
12:47 am
like i want my team to play. it was enjoyable to watch them. and so proactive, dynamic and brave. and we scored great goals. and even after we had some setbacks, we kept going till the end because in the end we should have won as well with the big chances from scott mctominay and pellistri. so yeah, of course i'm disappointed because we should have managed the game better. we will learn from that. but you see, this team is in development. arsenal needed just a draw at home to lens to ensure a place in the last 16, they did much more than that, winning 6—0. they were 5—0 up by half—time at the emirates stadium — gaining revenge for their defeat to the french side earlier in the group. they're the first english team to lead by five goals at half—time in the champions league. arsenal winnng the group, the europa league is the best lens can hope for. jude bellingham's incredible start to life at real madrid continues, the england midfielder scored at the bernebeu against napoli. that put them 2—1 up, they won 4—2 to make it five wins out of five.
12:48 am
bellingham is up to 15 goals in all competitions for real, napoli need a point against braga in their final match to qualify in second place these are all the nights other results, terrific draw for copenhagen at bayern munich to keep them in contention for the last 16. psv eindhoven qualified along with arsenalfrom group b, beating sevilla 3—2. pepi with an injury time winner. sevilla are out. real sociedad and inter milan were already through from group d, both drew and they play each other next month to see who finishes top. the england captain owen farrell won't take part in next year's six nations championship. he is taking a break from international rugby to "prioritise his and his family's mental wellbeing". farrell, who'll continue to play for his club side saracens, is england's all time leading points scorer and. has been capped 112 times since making his debut 11 years ago. he led them to the final

of the 2019 world cup and to the semi—finals this year. he missed the first two games of the tournament through suspension after a dangerous tackle in a warm up game. he was booed by some sections of england supporters on his return and his father andy, the ireland head coach, described his son's treatment as "disgusting" and a "circus". england say they fully support farrell's decision the head coach steve borthwick saying, "since making his debut, he has been an integral part of the england set—up for over a decade and the demands on elite athletes are extremely challenging. "he is an exemplary player, captain and leader and always gives his all for his country. it is with typical courage that owen has made this decision to open up in this manner." luke donald will stay on as team europe's captain for the next ryder cup in 2025. the former world number one led europe to victory in rome earlier this year and has represented europe four times as a player.

he'll be the first europe captain in 30 years to serve consecutive terms. between 1991 and *95. bernard gallacher was captain three times between 1991 and *95. british gymnastics is introducing new safeguarding rules which will mean coaches can no longer weigh gymnasts, deny them water breaks or take them out of primary school to train. the new policy comes after an independent report found systemic abuse in the sport. the changes will affect hundreds of thousands of youngsters in clubs across the uk. our sports correspondent natalie pirks has more.? at huntington gymnastics club, they know a thing or two about training champions. three, two, one... good girl, well done. but positive encouragement, with parents allowed to watch, has not always been the norm in the sport.

it makes me feel worthless, it turned me into a shell of who i used to be. last summer, an independent report described systemic abuse in british gymnastics, with some children starved and subjected to the tyranny of the scales. today's new safeguarding policy says gymnasts over ten can only be weighed by a qualified sport scientist with written consent from the child and their carer. and after horror stories of children denied water and toilet breaks, new hydration rules call this kind of behaviour physical abuse. no coaches should be weighing gymnasts, categorically. for us, this is about making sure within gymnastics, we do not see them as gymnasts put young people, children, and therefore we understand what their requirements are and their needs are, and there is no desire for us to put medals above welfare.

it is notjust issues around weights and hydration for the governing body, but children as young as seven are being pulled out of school for extra training sessions and that should be a thing of the past, especially for primary school kids. some feel those over 12 should have been included, but parents hear our pleas british gymnastics has addressed education for the first time. there will only be a a handful of children that will go on to achieve olympic gold and it is such a gamble of the sport that education must be key to their growth as well. children who are on the pathway to possibly being in the olympic team, it is not necessarily all that bad if they miss some school as long as they are not falling behind academically. this girl regularly missed school as an acrobatic gymnast, quit the sport at 1a, tired of the constant weighing and body shaming. she is the only gymnast who has received a settlement

from the governing body. it is a right step in the right direction but it is hard to move on when you have a complaints process that is not delivering. a lot of those coaches have not been banned and are still active in gymnastics environments, which is wrong. british gymnastics' track record mean some are sceptical about home robustly these policies will be enforced. but today it made a very public promise to put children first. natalie pirks, bbc news just weeks after record viewing figures for women's sport were revealed. now it seems it's being matched by the money. global revenue generated by elite women's sport is predicted to surpass £1 billion for the first time next year. the forcecast is based on matchday, broadcast and commercial revenue and has doubled overjust the last two years. events like the world cup have contributed to the success, along with star names and and some great stories. jennifer haskel from deloitte says it's all helping raise the profile and financial

health of women's sport commercial revenue is is major driver, it's everything from league sponsorships, sponsorships etc. so we saw that women's sport is starting to distinguish its own commercial powerhouse, and its own commercial identity, and that has been its driver over the last few years and now we are starting to see broadcast revenues and match day revenues increase as we increase the capacity of stadiums, and so in 2024 we will see all three of these categories continue to rise. mark selby is into the uk championship quarterfinals in york after nail—biting final frame decider against his good friend decider against barry hawkins.

the two—time champion started with the highest break of the tournament so far, hawkins battled back from 5—3 down to force the decider but it's selby, a four time world champion, who goes through to the last 8 next up for him isjudd trump, which should be a terrific match the 2011 winner is this season's form player, winning three ranking touranments in a row last month. the world number two made the perfect start to his match against welshmanjamiejones, taking the first frame with a century break — and he completed a 6—frame whitewash. mark williams won the battle of the welshmen, he came from two frames down to beat jamie clarke by 6—4. williams described his century in the final frame as the best he's ever made in a match. he'll play ding junhui next, after he beat england's tom ford by 6—3. reminder of our top story, manchester united throwing away a two goal lead against galatasary and qualification for the champions league last 16 now out of their hands. even victory over bayern munich in theirfinal group game might not be enough. you can get all the latest sports news at from the bbc

sport app, orfrom our website — that's bbc.com/sport. from me and the rest of the team at the bbc sport centre, goodbye. hello there. talk of the town this week has just been how cold it's become. yes, on wednesday, we started off with a hard frost in the lake district. temperatures were sitting at minus seven first thing in the morning. and despite lots of sunshine throughout the day, they struggled to climb above freezing by the middle of wednesday afternoon. now, we could actually see a similar story on thursday, a widespread hard frost to begin the day, the exception down in the southwest with this developing area of low pressure. that's going to bring outbreaks of rain and windy with it as well. we could see gusts of wind on exposed coast close to 50 mph. let's zoom in and look at that in a little more detail. it will be primarily rain across the isles of scilly and much of cornwall, some wet snow perhaps across the moors.
12:57 am
and some of this frontal system willjust brush the south coast, maybe the odd spot or two of rain south of london. a cold day, generally four or five degrees, some freezing fog slow to lift in the midlands. now with that northeasterly breeze, one or two wintry showers along exposed east coasts of northern england and eastern scotland. sheltered western areas will see the best of any sunny spells. but again, a cold day, two to five degrees quite widely across the country. now, as we move out of thursday into friday, again, light winds, clear skies. once again, those temperatures falling away. it looks likely to be another cold and frosty start to friday morning, and, potentially, friday could be the coldest spell over the next few days. so some freezing fog quite possible as well. and a subtle change in wind direction means that we run the risk of a few more showers running down through the north coast of northern ireland, and down through the irish sea as well. so a few coastal showers around. inland, dry, plenty of sunshine, but another cold day,
12:58 am
zero to five degrees at the very best. now, as we move out of friday into the start of the weekend, we could see a few more showers drifting in from the west, but a relatively quiet start. before, as we move into the middle part of the week, we could see areas of low pressure bringing yet more rain in and perhaps something a little less cold. so it'll be a cold and frosty start to our weekend. but as you can see, more showers are likely and those temperatures gradually starting to creep up. that's it. stay warm.
