8:00 pm
hello, i'm anna foster live in tel aviv. we've just heard in the last hour or so that the issues with the day to of releasing the hostages have now been resolved. this is following intensive mediation efforts by egypt and qatar, because earlier today the armed wing of the hamas said they would delay that release because they accused israel of failing to meet certain conditions included in that deal, things like not letting aid trucks into gaza. with the help of qatar and egypt, they have no resolve the dispute and the hostages we know will be transferred tonight to the international committee of the red cross as they were yesterday
8:01 pm
to be handed back to israeli officials. we know that 13 is really hostages are due to be released and would also be released is separate to that deal. 39 palestinian prisoners who are being held in israeli jails also being exchanged for those hostages. now as we continue to watch those live pictures, joining us now on the line, our correspondent lucy williamson. and the occupied west bank. lucy, we sawjubilant scenes and the occupied west bank. lucy, we saw jubilant scenes there yesterday as prisoners were released by this time yesterday. we've had these delays, what is happening where you are now?
8:02 pm
right, this sounds like we are have communication problems here. we can't make contact with lucy at the moment. so we'll keep trying, lucy williamson our correspondent in the west bank. let's head tojerusalem with our correspondent tom bateman. it seems that the problems have been ironed out now, do we know what stage the release process is at? while we know it is due to take place tonight. that's all we have been told, and remember we are six hours on now from the disagreement, what they agreed time of release is supposed to be. and as you were saying, we've had what seemed like a convoluted delay because of those
8:03 pm
issues that hamas was accusing israel of not letting trucks into the north of gaza, of what they claim is manipulating the lists of palestinians to be released from israeli custody. but that all now as result, we had all the sides basically saying this thing is moving ahead and it will take place tonight. but remember of course, yesterday, that it takes a while. because they hand over to the red cross itself happens basically in secrecy, although we did see that filmed yesterday and those pictures later released. that transfer to the rough crossing, that's another thing, they have to be transferred, that took some time yesterday. and what we were saying last night is that hostages were taken to a facility in egypt, then received by the israelis and then taken across a liaison point in the fence between
8:04 pm
egypt and israel before they were taken to an air base in southern israel. so there were a lot of links in the chain. but what we know is they've got through those hurdles, they've got through those hurdles, the sox obstacles as they were being described a little earlier on. find described a little earlier on. and tom, described a little earlier on. and tom. you _ described a little earlier on. and tom. you know— described a little earlier on. and tom, you know as _ described a little earlier on. and tom, you know as we've been discussing this, this whole process has been very delicate and difficult, it has taken days and weeks relate to get to this point in the first place. in fact, hold that thought, tom, we can hear it from the israel defense forces, their spokesman daniel hungary. translation: we spokesman daniel hungary. translation:— spokesman daniel hungary. translation: ~ , ., translation: we will update the -ublic the translation: we will update the public the moment _ translation: we will update the public the moment something - translation: we will update the - public the moment something happens. we are working with them on the outline with the mediators but with a very cruel enemy. but until something happens we cannot actually

darted off and we've embarked on the journey of this outline and we are keeping to the agreement exactly as specified and agreed to by the government. there are mediators, very serious ones, egypt and qatar. and they are determined that this should happen. there is a murderous terrorist organisation called hamas and we have to ensure that we are fulfilling this agreement. if we don't, or if they don't, then of course we will go back to the manoeuvre because we have decided that this is something that we have to carry out. this is our decision, yes, but there will be a continuation after that. no, what was the second question? what continuation after that. no, what was the second question? what is our was the second question? what is your redline? _ was the second question? what is your redline? that _ was the second question? what is your redline? that if— was the second question? what is your redline? that if hamas - was the second question? what is l your redline? that if hamas violates the agreement, _ your redline? that if hamas violates the agreement, will— your redline? that if hamas violates the agreement, will you _ your redline? that if hamas violates the agreement, will you go - your redline? that if hamas violates the agreement, will you go back- your redline? that if hamas violates the agreement, will you go back toi

and in this agreement that was defined so specifically there is an issue of humanitarian aid, for example. so if we're talking about the humanitarian aid, it was agreed upon, so the idf have agreed that the lorries, the trucks that come in with the assistance and the aid from egypt and the united states, with humanitarian aid, united nations and other international organisations are bringing in, and so the supply is being carried out by the united nations and other international organisations to the north and to the south. the idf helps keep to the agreement but it is not being run by the idf. so what was the solution, what was actually, what was the problem? i'm not sure what you're talking about when you talk about that, but in that agreement, whatever was agreed upon in that
8:12 pm
agreement, we are fulfilling our part fully, and that is to bring in, to allow those lorries and, whatever was written down you are mediators and if there any gaps between us and what is written down, then we work on them the moment we are progressing and we will continue doing so. but i would like to clarify one issue. the entrance of those trucks into the north or the southisin those trucks into the north or the south is in accordance with what they can do and what they can supply. we are not involved in that. now we are talking about the tunnels that cross over to the egyptian side. i wanted to ask you about that. we are up to date vis—a—vis all the issues and they are preparing themselves and refreshing themselves and preparing for the next phases of the work, vis—a—vis the tunnels you are talking about

8:14 pm
was the other question? did israel have that early information? it's i have that early information? it's ve have that early information? very important that the public have that early information?- very important that the public must understand, yesterday was the first full day of this very complex incident, we are talking about this timetable and everyone expects everything to be exactly the same everything to be exactly the same every day. we have to bear very patiently, it's a very complex whole operation. we've got a headquarters with intel, with a idf that his being led by that, also the gss and the mossad and we are dealing with this 24/7. we the mossad and we are dealing with this 21l/7. we are burning the midnight oil, we are talking about major general newtown alone who he is running it. and ensuring that our hostages phase by phase will be returned and only then do we actually update the public. so of course, this is exactly like an operation and we are working on it as such. and then we have to update
8:15 pm
these families who are in such difficulty, it's a real nightmarish situation so they have to bear with us patiently and any information will have to be verified and only then we will actually convey that information if it has not been verified, of course not. but anything that is been discussed or anything that is been discussed or anything that is been discussed or anything that happens, we will analyse them and of course inform everyone. analyse them and of course inform eve one. ~ . analyse them and of course inform eve one. . ., ., ,, ., everyone. whatever happened today, will it impact — everyone. whatever happened today, will it impact what _ everyone. whatever happened today, will it impact what is _ everyone. whatever happened today, will it impact what is going _ everyone. whatever happened today, will it impact what is going to - will it impact what is going to happen— will it impact what is going to happen in the future? and secondly, are there _ happen in the future? and secondly, are there any gaps vis—a—vis left with— are there any gaps vis—a—vis left with these — are there any gaps vis—a—vis left with these sort of differences? between — with these sort of differences? between today and what's going to happen— between today and what's going to happen in— between today and what's going to happen in the future.— between today and what's going to happen in the future. look, nothing is fully closed _ happen in the future. look, nothing is fully closed and _ happen in the future. look, nothing is fully closed and decided - happen in the future. look, nothing is fully closed and decided on. - is fully closed and decided on. although what we saw yesterday, we still have to be very patient
8:16 pm
because every single day is an operation in itself. we are talking about a situation with all the complexities of the gaza strip, and the international red cross and the egyptians, and we are talking, and the hamas of course. the hamas terrorists as well. it won'tjust happen like clockwork. we have to wait very patient. it doesn't necessarily have ramifications on tomorrow or the following days, but we have to ensure that things will happen the best they possibly can and that people will come home as quickly as they possibly can. we want to create those conditions so that it happens, but of course the players are very very complex. we're talking about a very cruel terrorist organisation that has its desires to create psychological torture, psychological impact on us and of course everything has to be analysed and we will notify you the moment
8:17 pm
something is official. that and we will notify you the moment something is official.— and we will notify you the moment something is official. that was rear admiral daniel— something is official. that was rear admiral daniel hogg _ something is official. that was rear admiral daniel hogg ra, _ something is official. that was rear - admiral daniel hogg ra, spokesperson for the israel defense forces. there was a live press conference you were watching. let's return to tom beit hanunin watching. let's return to tom beit hanun injerusalem, he was here when that started and he was listening as well. a lot of pertinent questions there we heard translated by our interpreter. i'm not sure we got a great deal of new detailed though, did we? ~ ., , great deal of new detailed though, did we? ~ ., great deal of new detailed though, didwe? , did we? while he was asking people basicall to did we? while he was asking people basically to be _ did we? while he was asking people basically to be patient, _ did we? while he was asking people basically to be patient, wasn't - did we? while he was asking people basically to be patient, wasn't he, i basically to be patient, wasn't he, and said, importantly, that they are making progress and that is tallies with what qatar has been saying and the egyptians have been saying, what we are hearing from the palestinian side, that it seems like they are confident that his hand over of hostages from hamas will take place tonight as scheduled. or hours after
8:18 pm
the agreed time, but what he was saying there is it's very cuddly kid, don't expect these things to happen simply. and he was asked a lot of questions about how much they knew about the delay and whether or not there was anything in the claim by hamas that it was the fault of the israelis. the delay took place. because what hamas were claiming earlier was that fewer than 78 trucks had been able to travel from the south of gaza to the north. they said that was not what was agreed, more should have been able to go through. so that issue was put to him, and what he was basically saying there is it's not up to the israelis. it stated in the agreement, he was saying, and we don't know that that level of detail about what's in this agreement. but he was saying it stated in the agreement about transfer of aid but basically it's the un and aid agencies that do it, and it's the idf that effectively co—ordinates or sort of allows it to come into the
8:19 pm
north. so they were trying to suggest that there was no fault of the israeli side on that particular issue. but we've got to a point now where it seems that all the parties today are confident know it's going today are confident know it's going to happen. i think what we had from him really was a holding statement. they are always due to give a briefing every night on the military aspects of what's going on, that had been, this briefing had been delayed and delayed because obviously they didn't want to appear publicly while they were still doubt about whether they were still doubt about whether the hostage hand over would take place today. so think now i they are confident it's going to take place. that was the only issue he talked about, the only thing he addressed there. ., ., ~' about, the only thing he addressed there. ., ., ,, , ., about, the only thing he addressed there. ., ., ,, i. ., *, about, the only thing he addressed there. ., ., ~' ., *, ., there. tom, thank you, that's tom bateman there. tom, thank you, that's tom ltateman in — there. tom, thank you, that's tom bateman in jerusalem. _ there. tom, thank you, that's tom bateman in jerusalem. we've - there. tom, thank you, that's tom bateman in jerusalem. we've also| bateman injerusalem. we've also heard that the us presidentjoe biden has been in touch with the qatari's after that intensive negotiation it's been going on over the last few hours about the delay that hamas had announced in
8:20 pm
releasing that second group of hostages. joe biden spoke to the qatari prime minister on the phone about the delay and also about the mechanisms to resolve them. we were told that he expressed his appreciation for qatar's role in helping to facilitate that truce in the first place. let's had no to our middle east correspondent lucy williamson on the west bank, she's there on the line. by this time yesterday we had already seen those release of the palestinian prisoners. how have people been reacting where you are to that delay. it reacting where you are to that dela . . , reacting where you are to that dela . ., , ., , , reacting where you are to that dela. ., delay. it was a pretty calm, relaxed atmosphere — delay. it was a pretty calm, relaxed atmosphere until— delay. it was a pretty calm, relaxed atmosphere until about _ delay. it was a pretty calm, relaxed atmosphere until about i _ delay. it was a pretty calm, relaxed atmosphere until about i think- atmosphere until about i think 45 minutes ago. now there's many more people arriving here, many more green hamas flags and headbands than there were yesterday. it certainly feels a little more confident energy in the air at the moment. i think the news has got out that people are
8:21 pm
expecting the second bus—load of prisoners to arrive. but really, it is quite striking the change in the character of the crowds here. there is still families we've spoken to who are waiting for the relatives to arrive. still large groups of young palestinian men but as i say, the insignia of hamas is really much more present than it was yesterday and that, you know, that something of a statement lined up so close to israel's big prison, big security complex where the prisoners are being coordinated before they crossed the checkpoint.- being coordinated before they crossed the checkpoint. lucy, as we seak crossed the checkpoint. lucy, as we s - eak to crossed the checkpoint. lucy, as we speak to you. _ crossed the checkpoint. lucy, as we speak to you, we're _ crossed the checkpoint. lucy, as we speak to you, we're looking - crossed the checkpoint. lucy, as we speak to you, we're looking at - crossed the checkpoint. lucy, as we speak to you, we're looking at life l speak to you, we're looking at life pictures of bethune avenue. what we know about the palestinians who are due to be released today. at least one we believe is female and the rest are male. we know most
8:22 pm
of the people on that list of 300 prisoners are being chosen, most of those are teenage boys. some of them 18, some of them 16, 17. that seems to reflect, i think most of the women if this transfer goes ahead as planned, most of the women on that list so as i say six women we believe and 33 miners do to come out. believe and 33 minors do to come out. lucy, thank you. our middle east correspondent in beitunia in the middle east. earlier, i spoke to noam sagi — his 75—year—old mother is being held hostage. he is one of the family members who is waiting for news. so the last we heard from mum was on the 7th of october at 924 israel time when she was still texting my sister, saying
8:23 pm
that she see people with rpgs and kalashnikovs outside their house. she went into the safe room and that was the last we heard. the next thing that happened is at 6 pm in the evening when the army came in, they only found bloodstains and she was not in the house. and we didn't heard since. and obviously because of her age, you are hoping that she is going to be included in in this deal that is being negotiated over the next few days. that that is the hope, isn't it? it is. it is the hope. she is fitting the criteria because of her age, because of her gender to be released. but we're still waiting for good news. so talk me through that that process, because we know that lists are provided and then families are informed. so i suppose for you each day you will be waiting.
8:24 pm
you've got the phone, you're waiting for a call or a message. is that how it works? so we have a liaison officer for each family and every evening we're waiting for a call to say who is on the list and who is not on the list. they gave us a call. whether she is on or is not on the list. but up till now, we didn't heard. we're still waiting for tonight's list to be released. itjust you know, it's a torture. it's very intense. the whole family sitting and waiting and biting nails that we don't have and just want to see if she will be on the list. and when the evening comes to an end and the call hasn't happened, you've got to sort of pull back some strength and...wait again for the next day. it's crushing. it is crushing. the expectation gets to 100 and the disappointment gets you back to zero. and you need to rebuild that again. i think we need to stay positive
8:25 pm
and we need to understand that this is a zero sum game. she is not here. nothing really happens. but we're working so hard. the last 50 days for us is like one long day and we try so many things and we meet so many people and we're talking to you and to so many others in order to get this moment to happen. stay with us here on bbc news. hello. it's been a cold and crisp day across many parts of the uk. a clear evening on the way, too, and overnight, we're expecting another widespread frost. now, let me show you the satellite picture first — and in the last 2a hours or so, you can see the motion of the cloud. it's been coming in from the north, so that's where the cold air has been coming from, from the northern climes. but out towards the west, temporarily, we will see this
8:26 pm
incursion of slightly milder air brought by a weather front. so it does mean that the temperatures won't necessarily drop that quickly across western parts of the country. yes, across scotland and many central and eastern parts of the uk, with the clearing skies, there will be that sharp frost — but out towards the west here, where we have cloud and dribs and drabs of rain, actually by the early hours of the morning, probably no lower than three celsius in belfast, and in the tip of cornwall and devon, around seven celsius. so let's have a look at the forecast, then, for sunday — here's that approaching weather front or couple of them, warm front, cold front, occlusion actually, as well, and that means a lot of cloud and some outbreaks of rain. so it does mean that, after that beautiful and crisp saturday, sunday will be very different — grey skies, really overcast out towards the west with outbreaks of rain. but scotland, particularly central parts of scotland, will remain cold and clear through the day. some sunshine here in aberdeen, four celsius, and pretty chilly across yorkshire and down
8:27 pm
into the southeast. but southwestern areas will be a little bit mild, around 7—8. now sunday into monday, that weather front moves across the uk — in fact, it's right over us early monday — and it does spell some unpleasant weather in the morning on monday. so thick cloud outbreaks of rain, it'll feel cold, too — look at the winds coming in from the north again on this western edge of the area of low pressure, so the winds are coming around that low pressure dragging the colder air from the north yet again. so for most of us, it's single figures. and the cold air does hang around in the week ahead — in fact, there is milder air, but it's way towards the south and southwest of us. the air stream will be generally coming in from the north. so, here's the outlook for the week ahead. temperatures typically into single figures, but the weather will be quite variable and, in the mountains, wintry at times. bye— bye.
8:28 pm
8:29 pm
this is bbc news. the headlines... a dispute between hamas and israel which had delayed the latest transfer of hostages held in gaza is now resolved. qatar says hostages will be released *tonight*. these are live pictures from the rafah crossing, where more hostages will be brought shortly.
8:30 pm
these are live pictures from tel aviv. tens of thousands of israelis are holding a rally with the slogan, *bring them back home'. the military camp in the west bank is where the next group of military prisoners and atvs are due to be released by israel. a major attack by russian drones on kyiv — ukraine's military say more than 70 were launched overnight. it said 7a of 75 drones were shot down. now on bbc news, midlands today, episode four. —— future earth, episode four. from what we eat to how we grow, food can have a big impact on our planet.
