and tumbling world championships. and — a gateway to the bigtime in motor racing. we hear from the group in northamptonshire trying to make karting more affordable. (pres) hello there and welcome along to sportsday on saturday. and we start in the premier league where a depleted tottenham side suffered a second loss in a row today — this time at wolves. several key players were missing, including influential midfielderjames maddison. the loss means they miss the chance to move top for the time being. patrick geary reports. this is tottenham hotspur, or what is left of them. in the last game against chelsea, two players picked up
7:32 pm
significant injuries and another two suspensions. the job of maintaining their strong start to the season must fall to others. brennan johnson, perhaps. his first spurs goal, the celebration a dedication to james maddison, his stricken team—mate. in the first half, wolverhampton wanderers darted around with menace but no sharp finish. mario lemina worked hardest although an unfamiliar spurs team lacked rhythm. unable to control the game they were dependent on the mercy of wolves. and that couldn't be relied on. as the clock ticked to 90 they found pablo sarabia produce the spectacular. it wasn't the finish. in the 97th minute wolves came back for more. tottenham's bad week ends with wolves* golden day. it may be most proud i have been since i've coached, because i thought we were the better side. even at 1—0 down, with 85 minutes on the clock, i was proud of the group.
7:33 pm
i thought the understanding of what we were trying to do was excellent and the mentality to keep going. we played a bit conservatively. we weren't as positive as we could be. - the second half was a little bit better. i we were granted some. chances but as you said, there are a lot of players - playing their first starts and a lot of change from last week. we weren't going to. get the same fluency. well, tottenham's north london rivals arsenal took full advantage — and moved level with manchester city at the top of the table — thanks to a 3—1 win over burnley at the emirates. goals from leandro trossard, william saliba, and oleksandre zinchenko proved the difference for mikel arteta's side, who responded well to their only defeat so far of the season last weekend. for burnley — they're in trouble — with a fourth league defeat in a row. but the gunners trail city now on goal difference. here are the managers post match. very happy with the performance. the way the team played,
7:34 pm
the way they dominated the game, their purpose and determination. we played them in areas we wanted to play them. i think we fully deserved to win the game. zinchenko was brilliant today. he showed a very different determination, especially to defend. he is leading the game. i am really happy with him. i thought we did as well as we could in terms of being solid, aggressive, also taking our moments and being good on the ball. that kept us in the game. but then of course when in the second half the game gets decided on two set pieces which have of course is part of the game and something arsenal are really good at doing. for us it leaves a bitter feeling. manchester united bounced back well from the midweek champions league misery, by getting the better of luton at old trafford. the score, 1—0. but it really could have been a lot more. rasmus hojlund, marcus rashford and alejandro garnacho missing some good chances.
7:35 pm
victor lindelof*s goal giving united the three points — his first for nearly three years, easing the pressure a little on erik ten hag — who will have to serve a one—match ban after being booked earlier. it is a good day. we needed that win. we got it, but it could be more easily. when you score early on and make the second, we created the chances but didn't score, apart from one. i am happy with that and happy with the clean sheet. game of the day though perhaps was at selhurst park — as everton came out on top in a five goal thriller. they beat crystal palace 3—2 — to extend their unbeaten run to three matches. and sean dyche*s side now up to 14th with the victory. everton were ahead twice before being pegged back, but substitute idrissa gueye*s late finish won it for everton. the result means they're now unbeaten in four games in all competitions, and eight points clear of the relegation zone. yeah, very pleased.
7:36 pm
a different kind of performance. early season we played better than that and didn't win games. the grit and determination, some of the details, the defensive responsibility of the team, the energy and work, they are the glue that hold teams together and i think that is coming and building. we do have quality anything we can show better than we did today. you have got to find a way to win games in the premier league and we are doing that. bournemouth are out of the relegation zone after beating newcastle, plagued by injuries. both goals came from dominic solanke — this fine finish putting bournemouth into the lead before the corner flag got a bit of beating from the englishman! just 13 minutes later and solanke was again wheeling away in celebration, this goalmouth scramble presenting an opportunity too good to miss. the cherries held on for the clean sheet. in the championship, birmingham are still winless under wayne rooney — after losing at sunderland in the early kick off. it was the former blues player jobe bellingham, brother ofjude, who gave the black cats the lead, poking in from close range. rooney's side equalised soon
7:37 pm
after thanks to koji miyoshi — his third of the season. but order restored for the home side, an own goal... ..and later substitute adil aouchiche made it 3—1 to sunderland — his first goal for the club. birmingham have now lost four out of five under rooney and have slipped right down the table, now just four places off the drop zone. a shock for leaders leicester again in the championship — beaten 1—0 by middlesbrough, which allowed ipswich to move level on points with them at the top. their fine season continued as they came from behind to beat swansea 3—2. leeds kept the pressure on at the top, with a 2—1 win over plymouth. big wins for millwall and watford, who beat strugglers sheffield wednesday and rotherham respectively. dundee moved two points off third place in the scottish premiership. they thrashed high—flying st mirren at dens park. 4—0 the score. amadou bakayoko with two for them. hearts are up to 4th with a win over motherwell. wins also for hibernian and stjohnstone. leaders celtic — and second placed

rangers are both in action tomorrow. american soccer legend megan rapinoe will play the final match of her career later on saturday. the two—time world cup winner has the chance to win the national women's soccer league championship with 0l reign against gotham fc. rapinoe has played for the seattle based club since 2013, but they — and she — have never won the championship. it's also the final game for her former us teammate ali krieger who plays for gotham. we have played in the biggest games together, played in world championship games together, while the president was tweeting at us! i feel like this moment we are just happy to be in it together. i think we wish, both of each other wish each other so well. we're so happy and proud of each other. this will be what we talk about with, well, her kids, and our families forever to come. i think we also are both really competitive and

really want this one. obviously we want to end our career on a high. england finished their cricket world cup campaign on a high by beating pakistan, and thus qualifying for the champions trophy in 2025. the win caps off what's been a dismal run in india for the holders, who've lost 6 out of their 9 matches. joe wilson reports. time is up. whatever england did in kolkotta was too late. at least they batted with intent. jonny bairstow*s 59, belatedly his best. there were some things england fans may never see again. joe root and ben stokes guided the innings together. stokes top scored with 84, his future cricket will have to be rationed. this format will surely go. stokes put his dodgy knee through its full extensions here. england's total was 337, stokes' contribution once more unique.
7:40 pm
pakistan in reply, 0—1. immediate success for david willey. eden gardens are stunning, the air quality is concerning. here and in other cities, as the world cup continues, pakistan's captain knew they couldn't score fast enough to make the semifinals. forget net run rate, that was 61—3. mohammad rizwan was bold and then he cramped. injury to insult. at 36, moeen ali knows england will be moving on. david willey decided to retire after he was the only one in the squad not to get a new contract. here, his 100th england wicket. victory by 93 runs was confirmed when the ball descended again into the hands of ben stokes. the end of england's tournament, the end, perhaps, of an era. joe wilson, bbc news. mitchell marsh hit an unbeaten 177 as australia beat bangladesh by eight wickets in their final world cup group game. bangladesh were set for a strong finish to their innings
7:41 pm
but australia's bowlers closed things out expertly, with just 65 runs coming from the final 10 overs. set a target of 307 for victory, marsh struck nine sixes in his 132—ball knock as australia cruised to their total with 32 balls to spare in pune. let's take a look at next week's semi—finals. hosts india — unbeaten so far — will face new zealand on wednesday. the black caps' qualification was confirmed after pakistan failed to chase a 338—run target against england earlier. south africa will be up against australia in thursday's semi. let's have a quick look at some of the other stories making the headlines today. ronnie 0'sullivan is out of the international championship after a 9—6 defeat to china's zhang anda in the semi—finals. anda was 6—4 down before coming back to win five frames in a row to set up a meeting against england's tom ford in tomorrow's final. jorge martin has closed the gap on motogp title rival
7:42 pm
francesco bagnaia after finishing second in the malaysian sprint race. the defending champion only lost two points to the spaniard, after claiming third. he'll start tomorrow's race from pole ahead, of martin, with an eleven point championship lead with three grand prix left this season. and heavyweight boxers anthonyjoshua and deontay wilder are in talks to fight on the same card, but against different opponents, in saudi arabia next month. joshua hasn't fought since august — while wilder's team say they're "hopeful" a deal can be finalised. britain's jack draper missed out on a first atp tour title after losing to adrian mannarino in the sofia 0pen. the 21—year—old had been hoping to add to the title he won last week at a second—tier challenger event in italy. he bounced back to level the match after losing the opening set. but his experienced french opponent who was second seed, held firm in the bulgarian capital to win his fifth tour title.

sweden have the early advantage against britain, at the billiejean king cup playoff, taking place at london's copper box arena. it's afterjodie burrage was shocked by kajsa rinaldo persson, a player ranked more than 250 places below her, who won their match 6—4, 6—1. 0ur tennis correspondent russell fuller is there for us. 1—0 at the end of the opening day's play represents a very good afternoon's work for sweden, and in particular kajsa rinaldo persson, who lost the first four games tojodie burrage, who was making her debut, but then won 12 of the next 13 games to round out the match in style. it was a grisly debut for burrage, who was by far the higher ranked opponent. she said that you can't really imagine how much pressure you feel making a debut for your country until you have actually done it. she said she is willing and keen to play on sunday, but that is going to be the decision now for captain anne keothavong,
7:44 pm
with players like harriet dart and heather watson with so much experience waiting in the wings. katie boulter did make sure it was 1—0 overnight with a comfortable victory over an opponent ranked outside the top 500 but great britain still with plenty of work to do on sunday if they are to make sure they are into the qualifying round next april, with a chance to compete at the 2024 finals. novak djokovic will take on holger rune on sunday as the atp finals get underway in turin. the world number one is on a high after winning last week in paris to claim his 40th masters 1000 title. djokovic — now 36 — hasn't lost a match since his defeat to carlos alcaraz in the wimbledon final. it's the pinnacle of atp tour — other than slams, this is the biggest tournament we have in the sport. the best eight players in the world worked very hard the entire year, all the players to qualify for this event, it is a great privilege. it is the only tournament that really has the group format. even if you lose a match or two
7:45 pm
you can still qualify for semis. i think that removes a little bit of pressure of losing a match, but still, you need to be at your best every single match. every single match is placed at the quality of probably finals every single match is played at the quality of probably finals of the masters 1000 event. this is a big moment for me, the atp finals, with eight best players of the year. it is a goal for me. my goal is to win it and i give whatever it takes to take the trophy home. england fly—half george ford inspired sale to a 27—13 win over bristol to go second in the premiership. harlequins are top of the league though — they secured their fourth straight win after beating leicester 29—25. imran sidat was watching.
7:46 pm
after a poor start to the season at leicester tigers were hoping the return of their world cup winners would inspire a turnaround. harlequins, on the other hand, have been flying, and it didn't take them long to make their mark. early tries gave the tigers plenty of food for thought. just when it looked like one—way traffic, leicester finally responded. some neat handiwork reduced the deficit. that provided the inspiration they needed as freddie steward's converted try gave them the lead. the drama of a breathless first half wasn't quite done yet though, as harlequins regained the advantage through tyrone green. after the break the home side once again went ahead, with steward getting his second of the game. this topsy—turvy encounter showed no signs of easing up, as will porter responded for harlequins. handre pollard's penalty
7:47 pm
put the tigers ahead, but lamb was on the money with his second try to seal victory and sent harlequins to the top of the table. and in the united rugby championship — benetton are up to third, after edging stormers in a close game. alessandro izekor*s try proving to be the winner — as the italian side ran out 20 points to 17 winners. and it was a tough day for the welsh sides. 0spreys went down 31—23 to glasgow, while scarlets suffered late heartbreak as henco van wyk*s late try gave the lions the win. in scotland, edinburgh havejust kicked off against connaght, the score currently 7—0 there. grand national—winning jockey graham lee is in intensive care after being injured at newcastle racecourse yesterday. the irishman suffered a neck injury after being unseated from his horse as the stalls opened. lee rode more than1 ,000 winners over thejumps including the 2004 grand national. he switched to flat racing in 2012. more success for great britain today in the trampoline and tumbling world championships.
7:48 pm
megan kealy winning silver in the women's tumbling. she scored a 25.800 for the pass. that adds to her women's team gold which was achieved alongside team—mate saskia servini — who took the bronze in the event today, in her debut senior world championships. and there was a bronze forjaydon paddock in the men's tumbling, pulling off a 27.800 pass to the delight of the home crowd in birmingham. kristoff willerton also competing for gb, but not in the medals. and a bronze to toast for the men's trampoline team too, with three routines to take the medals for andrew stamp, zak perzamanos, corey walkes, and peter buravytskiy. well yesterday we saw gb*s women defend their team tumbling title. megan kealy we sawjust now in the medals again today, was part of that team — as was naana 0ppon. they've been talking to bbc sport about their hopes for the championships in birmingham. three words you associate with tumbling.
7:49 pm
explosive. powerful. fast. i am megan kealy, i am the 2021 senior world champion and i am a ten time world medallist. that is magnificent from megan kealy. i am naana 0ppon. i am current british champion for senior and world cup silver medallist. i was around five when i started tumbling. i love the power of it because i was very active when i was a kid. ilovejumping around. i definitely wanted to do something like that. i think it is always so exciting. it is never the same and it is a little bit scary so there is the thrill factor of it. that is why i love it. i definitely get really nervous when i compete. i used to cry all the time before i competed. i get shaky legs and i feel like jelly.
7:50 pm
when i hear the crowd and everyone else motivating me and show we and it helped so much. people shouting for your really makes a difference and you will always be nervous, but nerves are a good thing because it helps with adrenaline. we are the women's and men's current world champion so that puts on a bit of pressure. they have been so many people before us that have made that possible for us to be this good. you always want to live up to the expectation. so far going well for them. if you want to succeed in motorsport, then karting is often the route many young drivers take to get to the top. the huge costs involved can put many people off though. racing in a national championship can easily cost £100,000 a year, but a karting league in northamptonshire is now pioneering a different way to make the sport cheaper and more accessible. jonathan park has more. i think it is a really good idea, because there are a lot of
7:51 pm
young children just wanting to go out and have fun karting, but it is just so expensive for people, for their parents to buy them a kart and then storing it, the fuel, tyres, everything. this gives a great opportunity for young children to join. finlay knows that getting into karting is impossible if you don't have loads of money. but he has been given a chance to race, thanks to a formula 1 engineer. motorsport is not democratised. i have spent all of my life at the top of the sport, in formula 1. i am massively passionate about the sport but i'm also passionate about looking as to what the next generation is going to do, and where do we find that next— generation from? we need a bigger pool with which to fish. we can'tjust keep fishing in the same pool of privileged families and kids who come from that background. rob's idea — the global karting lead. arrive and drive, no need to buy a kart and transported and maintain
7:52 pm
it. a £20,000 outlay just start with. that is out of our league. it is an expensive sports and it is trying to find the best way, of the best value for money, really, and the money that we spend doing this championship has been worth every penny. the gkl is not free. £300 a round and a ten round season will cost £3000. still a fraction of the cost of other championships. it is estimated that in the uk for half a in the uk 4.5 million youngsters know how good they are a football, but only 2000 know how fast they would be behind is the idea behind this league, to open up the sport to more young people to see if they have got what it takes when they are behind the wheel. to make it fairfor all, they run 48 volt electric carts, no arms volt electric karts, no arms race among wealthy parents, and finlay is pretty quick.
7:53 pm
last round i came first. now i am 15 points ahead of second. as long as i beat second and third next round, next month, i will be crowned champion. rob wants to meet1 million kids in the first five years to find a champion in ten by opening up the grid to more people from all backgrounds. jonathan park, bbc news. a reminder of our top story...wolves came from behind to beat spurs 2—1 at molineux — both the goals coming in stoppage time. and there was a surprise defeat for newcastle in the late game — two goals from dominic solanke securing a 2—0 win for bournmouth. elsewhere there were wins for manchester united, everton and arsenal, who beat burnley 3—1 — they're now second in the table behind manchester city who play chelsea tomorrow — you can get all the details on our website. that is it from us here on sportsday. thanks for watching and have a good weekend.
7:54 pm
hello. there is a pretty good chance of observing the northern lights, particularly across northern parts of the uk, where the skies will be clear. in the south it is a different story. an advancing weather front means thick cloud and outbreaks of rain, and indeed tomorrow it is a wet one for many of us. but not everywhere, i think, in the north the best of the weather. 0n the satellite picture, here is the weather front approaching the british isles. thick cloud already in place across many western and south—western areas. a wet evening here and the skies will remain clearest for the longest the further north and east you are. the forecast then — this evening shows clear skies in the north, but thickening cloud across ireland, outbreaks of rain, rain reaching wales, the south west, central and southern england too. where the skies that have been clear over night, and with light winds, a touch of frost and some mist and fog forming here as well
7:55 pm
through the lowlands. the vale of york as well, but to the south of that where we have the stronger winds, and that weather front is, it's a wet story here, really murky and drizzly. let's have a look at the picture around late morning. we can see sunshine and clear skies across much of scotland, sunshine for edinburgh, fine weather for newcastle and most of the north sea coast. further west and south it is a cloudy picture with rain at times. you can see it is not a coherent area of rain, farfrom it. you can see pulses of rain here, one in the north and another one here approaching wales in the south—west. if anything, towards the end of the afternoon, we might see a return of some bright, if not sunny weather to south—western parts of england and wales, just in time, and before sunset. let's have a look at the forecast for monday. a large area of low pressure across the north atlantic. a weather front crossing the uk. look at all of that rain, strengthening winds as well, risk of gale force winds around some
7:56 pm
of these western coasts. it really could be very windy for a time, say in the irish sea. i think the wettest of the weather in the second half of the day will be in the north there, anywhere from northern ireland to scotland i think, a fair amount of rain to come. the outlook for the week ahead is a very unsettled one. most places most days are in for some rain. perhaps towards the end of the week something a little bit drier and brighter. goodbye.
