israeli troops pushed further into gaza city, surrounding it on four sides. surrounding it on four sides. the high court in london rules prince harry and other prominent figures can continue their lawsuit against the publisher of the daily mail. there are growing calls for the uk prime minister to sack his home secretary, who accused police of bias over pro—palestinian marches. as rising sea levels threaten the very existence of tiny tuvalu, australia opens a pathway for its citizens to resettle. hello, i'm lucy hockings. welcome to bbc news now, three hours of fast—moving news, interviews and reaction. the largest hospital in gaza, al—shifa, is reportedly surrounded by israeli forces. our gaza correspondent is hearing the military is on all four sides of al—shifa. many thousands of people have been sheltering at al—shifa hospital,
12:01 pm
along with some localjournalists. people on the ground say there is intense violence there. in the early hours of friday there was the sound of a large explosion. explosion. there was panic and confusion in the hospital following the explosion. newsagency associated press, which supplied these pictures, said there was a fire in the area and the remnants of what appeared to be a missile. the hamas—run health ministry says 13 people were killed. people sheltering in the grounds also recorded the moment and its aftermath. explosion. israel's military says it is investigating reports that the areas around the hospitals have been struck.
12:02 pm
it's previously said its forces were operating close to shifa hospital, which it says is above hamas headquarters — a claim hamas denies. other hospitals in the territory are also said to be surrounded. the world health organization says 20 hospitals in gaza are now non—operational. these pictures are from al—rantisi paediatric hospital, which is funded by the us—based palestinion children's relief fund. we can see tanks outside the hospital, which is said to be the only medical facility in gaza that treats children with cancer. live now to southern israel and my colleague mark lowen. we are about a mile away from the gaza strip is the israeli troops continue to push further and deeper into gaza city. reports that they are surrounding several hospitals
12:03 pm
and from al—shifa hospital we have heard now from the hospital director that they will not evacuate al—shifa hospital. the medical team are determined to remain there in order to treat the patient. there are possibly tens of thousands of civilian still sheltering outside hospitals. that is complicating the task of the israeli military. in other news,... the palestinian authority president, mahmoud abbas, said it would be part of a "comprehensive solution" for the occupied territories and gaza. also, president biden has welcomed israel's decision to formalise brief humanitarian pauses in the fighting in northern gaza, calling it a "step in the right direction".
12:04 pm
there are two humanitarian corridors being created. two humanitarian corridors will open in the territory for four hours each day — the salah al—din road, which hundreds of thousands of people have already used to head south, as well as the coastal al—rashid road. many of the people heading out of gaza city are having to do so on foot. they have left their homes and are heading to refugee camps in gaza's south. meanwhile, talks continue to free more than 240 hostages still being held in gaza. the palestinian group islamichhad released a video of hostages it claims to be holding.
12:05 pm
i've been speaking to our gaza correspondent, who told me about two developments around his position in southern gaza. the tanks are now advancing east, they are in the heart of the rimal neighbourhood, one of the hubs for everything in gaza, including the banks, telecommunication company, the plc, palestinian legislative council, and all of the important buildings and institutions are in this neighbourhood. tanks are now in the middle of this road. they are advancing from where the shifa hospital is east, and they are almost close to gaza city centre. the second development, we heard from a source inside the al-quds hospital, south—west of gaza, the first communication exclusive to the bbc
12:06 pm
from inside the hospital, the tanks are now advancing east, they are in the heart soldiers are not inside the hospital, but tanks around the hospital, heavy fighting around the hospital. they managed to get over radio to one of the ambulance drivers here in khan younis a message saying the situation is very serious, communication is cut. so now the tanks are advancing into the gaza city centre which is quite significant, and this street is in the heart of rimal, close to the bbc office. every day in the morning i used to drive to myjob from that street. it is the economic hub for gaza, most of the important companies, the telecommunication company, the central bank, the bank of palestine, it is in the middle of this neighbourhood and now it is all fallen under israeli control. we have heard from the medical chief
12:07 pm
at al—shifa hospital saying that they will not evacuate the hospital. they want to continue to be operational there, to care for the patients. what is your sense, your assessment, of the extent of israeli military control across gaza? they are entirely in control of the shifa area. still there is route for people to escape. and many people escape. ijust met a guy who came from shifa hospital, he was in shifa hospital last night. he made thisjourney, along salah al—din road, he walked about 5—6km and he made it here to khan younis. he told me last night there was a lot of explosions inside the hospital, around the hospital, and he said that he saw tanks very close to the hospital. what we have to understand is that in the last 20 days or so, many people take the hospital as shelter, so thousands of people were taking the courtyard,
12:08 pm
the car park, any space in the hospital was like a shelter for those who are displaced from their homes. and a refugee camp very close to the hospital. and in addition to that, the al—shifa hospital is the largest medical centre in gaza, so i presume hundreds of people are treated in about five, six buildings inside the hospital, so moving the patient is risky for the people, for the doctors in the hospital. it is going to be a very complicated situation, but for now, we still have contact inside the hospital, no tanks, no soldiers inside the hospital, but they are surrounding that place. you can probably see they're in the
12:09 pm
distance are very loud air strike is just head somewhere in gaza. you can see the white smoke billowing up in the distance. pretty constant strikes here. 0utgoing israeli artillery, as well. we will endeavour to see what that was targeting. let's bring in amos yadlin, a retired major—general and the former head of israel's defence intelligence. he's now the president of mind israel, a security consulting firm advising the israeli government. thank you forjoining us here on bbc news. can i start off by asking you what intelligence is there that hamas is controlling the hospitals that the israeli troops are targeting? it that the israeli troops are targeting?— that the israeli troops are taruuetin? , ~ ., ,

ten—month—old hostage baby. about 30 kids. it is about mothers, they have already killed their children in front of them. they rape women. this is what you have under al—shifa and this is why israel will put its hand on it. let me remind you, that hitler was in a bunker and he was surrounded. hamas denies that the hospitals are anything to do with them, of course, and they have urged the un team to come in and disprove what they say is israeli propaganda. talking of the un, the un human rights chief has accused both sides in this conflict of committing war crimes and he went a stage further today. let's listening to what he has said

much indeed for your time and your thoughts here on bbc news. just referring to the discussion we were having about the un, which would deny any anti—israel bias, they said that almost 100 of its officials have been killed since this conflict began. that is the highest number by far of any conflict that the un has had to deal with. we will continue to bring all of the developments from inside gaza, from israel and the wider region, but for now it is back to you in london. around the world and across the uk, this is bbc news. let's look at some other stories making news. latest official figures show no economic growth in the uk between july and september after a succession of interest rate rises. the performance was slightly better than expected. many analysts had
12:19 pm
believed it would shrink. last week, the bank of england said the uk economy was likely to see zero growth until 2025, although it is expected to avoid a recession. england's chief medical officer has warned that the uk faces a "health crisis" because of a rapidly ageing population. in his annual report professor chris whitty says, while more people are living longer, many of their later years are spent in bad health. the former boss of natwest dame alison rose will lose a £7.6 million payout after she admitted discussing the closure of nigel fa rage's bank account. dame alison will receive her £2.4 million fixed pay package, but will not benefit from share awards and bonuses she had been previously entitled to. you're live with bbc news. a high courtjudge has ruled that prince harry can continue his legal action against associated newspapers
12:20 pm
— that's the media organisation that includes titles such as the daily mail. the prince has accused the company of unlawful information gathering. lawyers for the newspapers had argued he and other high—profile people, including sir eltonjohn and baroness lawrence of clarendon had run out of time to bring the privacy claims. prince harry has been involved in five other legal battles at the high court in recent months, including cases brought against mirror group newspapers, which publishes the mirror, and the murdoch—owned news group newspapers, publisher of the sun and the now—defunct news of the world. well, mrjustice nicklin had to decide two things. to decide whether this case goes ahead. firstly, are the seven claimants, including prince harry, duke of sussex and six others, are they out of time, have they run out of time to make this claim? the law says you have six years. what he said was that they couldn't afford to claim earlier potentially because he said they have a real chance of proving that associated newspapers concealed what they have been doing in the past.
12:21 pm
and therefore they had no chance of taking this action because of that concealment. they still have to prove that but they will get a chance to do that at a case, a trial next year. he also decided that crucial evidence in this case, receipts for payments from the newspapers to private investigators, that that should remain confidential. but he has given the claimant is a bit of an option here, because he said they could go to a minister to try to get that confidentiality removed. so both of that is quite positive for prince harry and the others, and they will now look at their next steps, and that could well be a trial potentially next year. there are important to say that associated newspapers is always the hem and these allegations. it said they are simply not true.
12:22 pm
and in terms of the claims that baroness lawrence's phone was hacked, the mother of stephen lawrence, somebody who has campaigned forjustice, the daily mail in particular has the daily mail in particular has associated newspapers says she has been given false information and almost put up to... nothing from associated on the record. they have only had this judgment for an hour or so. one of the uk's most senior police officers says policing cannot be influenced by politics. his comments were in response to an article the home secretary wrote for the times newspaper. the prime minister is under pressure to sack suella braverman for the article, which hadn't been cleared by the government. live now to our political correspondent hannah miller. how serious is this for rishi sunak? there are three issues with this article, it is what suella braverman said, accusing the police of being biased, there is how she set up,
12:23 pm
using the language of pro—palestinian mobs and talked about it being a hate march what is planned for armistice day tomorrow, then thirdly, the issue of whether someone who is in the position of home secretary should be using a newspaper article to make those kinds of very public comments around policing. all three of those things have had different reactions from mps in the conservative party. we understand that downing street had seen the article, asked for certain changes to be made around some of the content. those changes were made and they are now looking at exactly how it came to be that the article was published without those changes. there are a lot of angry conservative mps who won't speak publicly, saying that she ought to be sacked. the most senior to say anything publicly is the chancellor, jeremy hunt, who distanced himself
12:24 pm
from suella braverman's language, but didn't go as far is to say that she ought to be removed from her role. he said that the prime minister has confidence in suella braverman and therefore he had nothing else to say.— braverman and therefore he had nothing else to say. what are the chances now _ nothing else to say. what are the chances now we _ nothing else to say. what are the chances now we will— nothing else to say. what are the chances now we will see - nothing else to say. what are the chances now we will see a - nothing else to say. what are the - chances now we will see a government reshuffle. ., , , chances now we will see a government reshuffle. . , , ., ~ chances now we will see a government reshuffle. . , , ., ,, ., ., reshuffle. there has been talk of a cabinet reshuffle _ reshuffle. there has been talk of a cabinet reshuffle for— reshuffle. there has been talk of a cabinet reshuffle for months - reshuffle. there has been talk of a cabinet reshuffle for months now. | reshuffle. there has been talk of a i cabinet reshuffle for months now. it is possible that this will bring it forward there are numerous ways that rishi sunak could look at the ministerial code. the labour party has called for that to happen to see whether she has breach that by going through with this article. he also could remove her in a reshuffle. we know that a reshuffle is coming at some point, we have known that for a while. there are mps on the back benches of the conservative party would like to see her go.
