now they're also out. england's cricket world cup hopes ended by — who else but australia. i feel like we've let ourselves down, we've let people down at home who supporters through thick and thin. —— who support us. fighting like dogs — manchester united end their troubled week with a response their manager promised, and a win their fans craved. from the eighth tier and the corner of the country, ramsgate are the day's big fa cup first round winners. also coming up on sportsday... emma hayes* record—breaking career as chelsea manager will end next summer. the club announces she's leaving.

and world number ones, now with the world's best player. england win the wxv title and a bit of world cup revenge with it. hello again. it's not been in very much doubt for a while now, but england have been knocked out of the cricket world cup. the final blow of a disastrous tournament dealt, perhaps fittingly, by rivals australia. the defending champions lost a sixth game out of seven by 33 runs in ahmedebad, and now, mathematically, can't qualify for the semi finals in india, asjoe wilson reports. smiling australians, just what england needed in their empty world cup. england didn't give david willey a new contract, subsequently he retired, here still selected catching david warner. chris woakes took four wickets.
7:33 pm
a few australians like marcus doinis threatening to go big. johnny bairstow got him. in the heat, england persevered, for mike wood, some joy and some frustration. australia's 286 could have been worse. this was worse. johnny bairstow out to the very first ball of england's innings. captainjos buttler mis—hit gone for one. sums up his world cup. ben stokes was batting on a knee that will still undergo surgery, but he is the ultimate crowd entertainer, not here, the match winner. stokes fell for 64. england were all out 33 runs short. in the tournament, they are nowhere, all hope officially gone. top four make the semifinals, england are rock bottom. joe wilson, bbc news. yes, that picture ofjos buttler
7:34 pm
tells its own story. a year on from lifting the t20 world cup, this tournament could barely have gone worse for the england captain or his team. the captaincy is something that i've enjoyed the responsibility of in t20 and idi cricket. before this tournament, i feel like it brought out a lot of good things in my batting, so i think it is frustrating and i can't quite put a finger on why i'm not playing to the level i expect of myself. i've played a lot of cricket in india. of ipl cricket here. so it is not as though i don't know the conditions or the grounds. so as you say, as a captain, you want to lead from the front, so of all the things that have happened on this trip, i would say that my own form has been my biggest frustration, because you want to lead from the front as a captain. many others have watched on baffled as engalnd's campaign has unravelled. 0ur cricket correspondent jonathan agnew was commentating in ahmedabad,
7:35 pm
and gave us his assessment of its final meaningful instalment. there were glimpses of an improvement and i think they fielded well. at least they showed a bit of character in that regard. but again, it was a total they should have knocked off and that is really been the case throughout this world cup, and they have been very confused. the messaging has been very confused about how they go about playing, you have heard this mantra about going harder, going harder, going harder, sort of message from the bazball stuff in the test series. they have come into their kind of one—day game as well, where it is in fact, there have been times in this world cup where rather than going harder, they should have played more carefully and thoughtfully and had more common sense. that thankfully hasn't been the case throughout this world cup, which is why they are bottom and extraordinarily, believe it or not, they are in a situation where they have to try to beat the netherlands, and their net run rate, in order to qualify for the champions trophy in two
7:36 pm
years* time, and no one in their wildest dreams i don't think would ever imagine that would be the case. now, it's not often you score more than 400 in a one—day game and don't win. but that's what happened to new zealand in the day's other game at the cricket world cup. the rain—affected match in bengaluru was won by pakistan, a result that keeps them in the semi—final hunt. new zealand smashed a huge a01 for 6 from their 50 overs. rachin ravindra making a century in bengaluru. it left pakistan needing a world cup record chase to stay in the tournament. but fakhar zaman raced to a hundred of his own, hitting ii sixes before the rain came twice. pakistan's fast start was crucial, because it put them ahead of the rate. they win via the dls method and move onto 8 points. manchester united have ended a week of two defeats and some unwelcome scrutiny with a crucial premier league victory, provided by an injury time winner. joe lynskey watched their 1—0 victory at fulham. he is the latest man to wonder how to turn this club around.
7:37 pm
manchester united are once more a team out of form with a coach under pressure. and forced to speak out on a player who in defeat, went to a nightclub. this time, at fulham, they could briefly let loose. united had the ball in early, but it went to var. they are checking whether he impacts the passage of plav _ harry maguire had not touched the ball but was stood off side. the referee checked whether he was in play and more than three minutes later, it went back to 0—0. for long spells, it looked set to end that way. fulham were twice kept out by the acrobatics of andre 0nana, and his team looked for the goal that would turn down the focus. 90 minutes were on the clock when bruno fernandes found a way. it is manchester united's sixth win of the season and they're still not at their best. but if erik ten hag is to turn this club around, he will hope this is the breakthrough.
7:38 pm
well, erik ten hag gave a robust defence of his team, its style and spirit at his press conference yesterday, and insists the win at craven cottage today reflected that. we had to improve and i waited for a reaction and i think it was clear today that we have seen a reaction, this is the attitude, you have to play it. i think we played a solid game and we saw a good result. i'm very happy with it. the day's other feature game also finished i—0, with newcastle beating arsenal at stjames park. the only goal of the game came in the second half — anthony gordon bundling in from close range. it survived a lengthy var check for, among other things, a potentialfoul byjoe lintonjust before gordon's tap in. a huge win for newcastle as they move up to sixth, three points off the top four. arsenal's unbeaten premier league record is brought to an end. arsenal's defeat means manchester city are clear at the top of the table after thumping bournemouth 6—1.
7:39 pm
jeremy doku scored the first and then assisted four of the other goals. two of which came from bernardo silva. remarkably, none were provided by erling haaland, who was replaced at half time because of an ankle injury. but it was doku's performance that provided the talking point for pep guardiola. if you ask me, if you see how he is playing, he is quick. it is notjust today. all the games he has played have been really good. we are really pleased. they were the last team remaining in the top four divisions yet to win this season, but sheffield united have beaten wolves 2—1 to get their first three points of the premier league campaign at their 11th attempt since being promoted. and the full time celebrations hinted at the significance for a team that do remain bottom of the table, but got the victory with a 100th minute penalty scored by oliver norwood. they'd led 1—0 but had conceded an equaliser in the 89th minute
7:40 pm
before the dramatic ending. brentford's good recent run goes on. their 3—2 win over west ham was their third in a row. nathan collins got the crucial goal after the home side came back from 2—1 down to go above their opponents into ninth. everton led for a long time at goodison park, but a late ashley young own goal gave brighton a 1—1 draw. brighton are sixth, but haven't won for five games in the premier league. crystal palace moved into the top ten with a 2—0 win at burnley, who become the first team in english top flight history to lose their first six home games of a season. they're second from bottom, now level on points with sheffield united. eleven non—league teams have so far secured a place in the draw for the second round of the fa cup. today's first round ties saw two teams score seven, including aldershot from the national league who beat swindon of league two 7—4.
7:41 pm
while saturday's shock came from the south east corner of the country. ben croucher starts his story of the day with eighth tier ramsgate*s 2—1 win over woking. what do you need for the first round of the fa cup? home—made art project? a few loud and hopeful fans? 0nes who will support the team come rain or even heavier rain. and a giant—killing. the rams will smash it. they are the lowest ranked side left in the draw, and when they went behind to woking, 62 league places above them, it could have been curtains. but for a side who have won all their own matches this season, ramsgate weren't going anywhere.
7:42 pm
and he has scored! ramsgate are level! the club sold 5000 tickets for the day, and the majority of those fans will be happy with what happened next. ramsgate have gone ahead! they had never reached the second round before. they have now. another coastal town, another shock on the cards when scarborough athletic led to forest green until the 92nd minute, until the national league outfit were denied a famous win. marine hosted tottenham two years ago, and when chris doyle equalised against lee to harrogate town, dreams of another run were on. but the runs of sam fullerin would be their undoing, first as marine*s keeper went walkies, and then as their defence went missing to put the game beyond them. they eventually lost five to one. the same happened with stockport county where kyle wilson grabbed four goals all to himself.
7:43 pm
this was a day for the goliaths rather than the david's. hereford were beaten 2—1 by gillingham. whilst bracknell town pulled one back late against cambridge united in the 88th minute, they couldn't force a replay. we were guaranteed non—league success in somerset. re mac murphy cuts inside, shoots, and scores — gateshead were beaten 3—0, meaning they reached round two for the third time in four years. after more than a decade in charge, emma hayes will leave chelsea at the end of the season. her 13 major trophies so far at the wsl club have included two doubles and a treble. and she'll depart as one of the most successful managers in women's football. chelsea say hayes will depart for a position *outside club football* and she*s a strong candidate for the vacant usa women*s national team job. chelsea chairman todd boehly and co—controlling owner
7:44 pm
behdad eghbali said: while the club*s co—sporting directors added: former england international farah williams gave her reaction to the news on this afternoon*s final score. shocked. first i*ve heard of it. she has done a fantasticjob with chelsea and she has been given so much time, and they had patience in the early seasons with her, and she has built a phenomenal team at chelsea that compete on all levels. the question is who will they get to replace her? it is such a difficult job to replace her at chelsea. they will be sad that she is going and leaving chelsea, and leaving the wsl, and for me, what is next for her? it as a big question. the roll of honour, six women
7:45 pm
super league titles, five women's fa cups, two women's fa league cups, one spring series trophy, and one women's community shield. unbelievable. it will be difficult to replace her, and what she built at chelsea, and as i said, she will definitely be missed from the women*s game, if she is to leave it. that announcement came after chelsea extended their unbeaten start to the wsl season with a dominant 6—0 win over aston villa which takes them three points clear at the top of the table. frank kirby*s first chelsea goal since returning from long—term injury helped put them in control at half—time. johanna rytting kaneryd*s solo effort was the first of the four that came for chelsea in the second period, while the rout was ended by niamh charles. it leaves aston villa bottom of the table without a point. celtic have moved eight points clear at the top of the scottish premiership after beating ten—man ross county 3-0. a 10th consecutive win for celtic over county in all competitions wasn*t in doubt afterjames brown was sent off
7:46 pm

7:48 pm
and then, it was down to business. from the off, england were explosive, alex matthews with the pick and go to get them off to the perfect start, which stretched to three unanswered tries. england were cruising. before new zealand finally found a hole in their defence. after the break, they struck again and the comeback was on. england aren*t used to being under pressure, and tempers started to fray. but they were able to reset, and by the time zoe allcroft touched down, it was all over. england were wxv champions, a night to remember that cemented their place as the world*s number one. so while the team prospered, wo too did one of its individuals,
7:49 pm
because after the game, england captain marlie packer was named world player of the year. it is a game of rugby. you win it or you lose it, and sometimes losing a game of rugby makes you a better person and you learn from that, and beating new zealand in their own back yard, there is no betterfeeling, but you have to grow from that. that is hopefully what the squad will grow from tonight, and hopefully that will trickle down in twickenham further down the year. wales rugby legends alun wynjones, justin tipuric and leigh halfpenny bid their farewell to the international game at the principality stadium as wales beat barbarians by 49—26. tipuric and jones lined up for the baa baas. jones ends his career as the world*s most capped player and bowed out with the invitational side*s third try and the man of the match award. kieran hardy completed the victory for wales with his second try in as many minutes right at the end of the game in cardiff. in domestic rugby, harlequins have gone top of the premiership after beating newcastle 40—12.

7:51 pm
yes, we have seen the first two instalments of this much anticipated international triple—header in leeds this weekend. the men*s team completing a series clean sweep over tonga in this historic series, the first pacific island to come to england for a full test series. of course, being 2—0 up going into the series, there was still plenty to play for. there was a big rivalry between the two coaches. and there was a war of words between those two erupting over recent weeks. england were two tries in the first half, and ben curry finishing off a really classy incisive passing move before matty ashton, the wolve*s flying winner went over in the corner. an excellent england break eventually finding its way to elliot whitehead, who announced this would be his final match for
7:52 pm
england yesterday, a fitting way to end a super international career, and then with the game already won, the free—flowing england moves, space down the left, it was caution to the wind stuff, and excellent crossfield kick somehow ending up in the hands of leeds star harry newman. this headingley crowd up on theirfeet, 26 points to four, a really pleasing way to finish what has been a very good series win for sean wayne*s side. earlier here at headingley, in the first of the triple—header, england*s women playing a really comfortable victory over their welsh counterparts. 0nly england*s second game since last year*s world cup. an england side that features georgia roach, whojust a couple of weeks ago won the nrlw down under.
7:53 pm
a welsh side, you will remember formed only four orfive years ago, so this would always be a tough task, made all that up after amy hardcastle*s early two tries. into the second half, they were really unlucky not to get back into it before half—time, that was, i*m afraid it*s for wales. 11 tries in total, including a magnificent solo effort for roach, showing why she is considered one of the best players in the women*s game right now. 60—0, it finished to england*s women. the final instalment is where attention turns tomorrow, just down from the arena here in leeds, and hopefully it*ll be warmer and drier inside there. what a match we have to look forward to, a replay of last year*s wheelchair world cup final, england against france, by far the best two sides in the world right now. there is a huge rivalry between the two and it is live on the bbc and it is certainly not to be missed. adam wild at headingley.

given how wet it has been for quite some time, flooding will still be a concern over the days ahead. we have had some rain around today, some heavy showers here in sussex also affecting hampshire and also kent. a few thunderstorms and some gusty winds too. there are more showers coming in at the moment, following this area of low pressure that has dominated the weather. that has brought some more persistent rain in northern england and north wales. still some wet weather here around now but that rain will slowly tend to ease off overnight. out to the west, some clearer skies, the odd shower. chilly start first thing tomorrow in northern ireland and scotland, one or two mist and fog patches in the morning. those will lift. we start quite cloudy tomorrow in eastern scotland and england. still a bit of rain left from overnight, that should move away. a little cheer—up, sunshine coming through. out to the west, already some sunshine, a few showers through the day, bumping into the far west of scotland, one or two for northern ireland.
7:57 pm
bulk of the showers arriving across western parts of england and wales. if anything, those temperatures could be a shade higher than they were today. a bit like today, for northern parts of the uk, the winds should be fairly light and again like today, stronger winds will be in the far south. the far south—west of england, through the english channel and again, unfortunately, the channel islands will have some strong and gusty winds and some rather rough seas as well. those showers will continue into bonfire night, showers for many western areas, clearer skies out towards the east. that*s going to be the story over the next couple of days. still got low pressure essentially dominating the weather into the start of the new week so again, it*s still looking rather unsettled. close to that area of low pressure, some wetter weather in the far west of scotland. again, the odd shower for northern ireland, some showers for england and wales and maybe during the afternoon, a few more of those will get into eastern areas as well. but some sunshine around as well. temperatures — 11 to 13 degrees, those numbers not really changing very much over the week ahead. it*s probably not until the middle part of the week that we see our first spell of organised rain.
7:58 pm
this weather front pushing in from the atlantic with somewhat stronger winds, but it*s certainly not going to be a stormy week ahead. it is not going to be as windy, as wet as it has been and before the rain, in the middle part of the week, it*s a case of sunshine but also a few showers.
