of fashion, their clowns falling out of fashion, their make—up is said to be too scary for children. that's all ahead on bbc news. now on bbc news it's time for sportsday. hello and welcome to sportsday — i'm hugh woozencroft. our main headlines this evening. more heart break at the winter olympics for elise christie as she crashes out of the 500 metres speed skating final in pyeongchang. tottenham travel to turin looking for more magic in this season's champions league against italian giantsjuventus. and england cricketer ben stokes prepares to fly out to new zealand after appearing in court earlier today. good evening. we'll look ahead to tonight's champions league action in a few minutes.
6:31 pm
but we'll start with the winter olympics action from pyeongyang where lightning unfortunately struck twice for elise christie. four years ago she was disqualified in each of her three events in sochi. this morning it was the 500 metres short—track speed skating final. our correspondent david ornstein reports from south korea. elise christie arrived in pyeongchang with high hopes of redemption following triple disqualification from sochi four yea rs disqualification from sochi four years ago and now a triple champion. the world record holder in this event the 500 metres. she sailed through the heat and the quarterfinal earlier today, the semifinal presented warning signs, a scrappy semifinal presented warning signs, a scrappy race and she finished second and then disaster struck in the final. not a great start and then on the penultimate lap with her in third place she slipped off, she said that she was pushed into the

hoardings and left on the ice. afterwards she spoke to the bbc and she was devastated.” afterwards she spoke to the bbc and she was devastated. i was knocked over you know, i did not follow my own. five people in the final, it does not give you any benefit when someone does not give you any benefit when someone gets a penalty. it is just tough, i worked so hard for the 500. it has just been taken away from me. even the semifinal, i got crashed and then ended up in lane four. i know it is short track and i'm supposed to be prepared for this, but it still hurts. elise christie must pikus a stuff up immediately because on saturday she is racing in the 1500 metres and then next thursday her favourite event, the 1000 metres. for britain they are still awaiting their first medal of any description in this pyeongchang winter olympics. elise christie
6:33 pm
presenting one of the highest hopes of helping them towards the medal target of four, 210 medal. she had to atone in the 1500 metres or 1000 metres but for today it is bitter disappointment. so more disappointment for elise christie... earlier i spoke to two—time winter olympian, ben kilner and asked him how she would recover from yet another major setback. it is really hard, straight after an event, we saw her interview and she was clearly upset. it is one of those things where you just have to let it sink in, reflect on it and look at maybe some of the mistakes. and then move on. you have got to put it behind you. the 1000 and the 1500 metres to come. she has been skating very quickly indeed, of course to olympic records on the weight of the final. does she take those positives into the next events or will it weigh heavily on her mind, the disappointment? she can
6:34 pm
any —— she can only look at the positives as any good athlete will do. she has had hiccups in the past which play on her mind a bit but during a race you never think about that. you need to be in the kind of gladiator circle. and then outside of it you think about these things but once she gets onto the start gate i think everything will go. the mindset critically important and we saw how emotional she was four years ago. the emotion today very clear once again. of course before you build up, do think part of her will think she mightjust have an olympic voodoo? she has so much support behind and the whole country really feel for her right now. and they can only provide support. i think obviously she had some horrible stories from the past with death threats and things. and she speaks
6:35 pm
about those openly. but now that is all past i think everyone feels for her. we are all supporting elise christie. you mentioned that support. plenty of the fans in her hometown club cheering her on and really disappointing for them but she will spend the next day off with herfamily, maybe she will spend the next day off with her family, maybe reflecting she will spend the next day off with herfamily, maybe reflecting on that day and also during the positives from the support she has a round. yes i think during the race it was, someone yes i think during the race it was, someonejust yes i think during the race it was, someone just clicked hand and knocked onto her. but it was just extremely u nfortu nate knocked onto her. but it was just extremely unfortunate for her. well these are the thoughts of team gb chef de mission, mike hay. going into the final i think she knew she had to do something. she put everything out there to try to get the gold medal. she was not going for anything else. that is the nature of the sport and crashes u nfortu nately nature of the sport and crashes
6:36 pm
unfortunately do happen. she is a different athlete, she has been a world champion in between times, so two more races to go and i think she will come out fighting again. what a day it was for this 17—year—old american snowboard sensation chloe kim who produced a brilliant performance to take the gold medal in the halfpipe. a score of 98 point 25 under final one and a 17—year—old was a big hit with the home fans due to her south korean pa rents. home fans due to her south korean parents. she mentioned ice cream yesterday and spoke about food again today saying i wish i'd finished my brea kfast today saying i wish i'd finished my breakfast sandwich but i decided not to and now i'm getting hungry. but she did get straight the ice cream after becoming champion. she did get straight the ice cream after becoming championlj she did get straight the ice cream after becoming champion. i was getting really hungry and my stomach was rumbling. i was thinking i should hold it because i will get
6:37 pm
drug should hold it because i will get d rug tested should hold it because i will get drug tested but i could not do it. i think ijust drug tested but i could not do it. i think i just transferred drug tested but i could not do it. i think ijust transferred all that angerfrom me having an empty stomach into my third round and it worked! well she is not the only one left smiling today, the german daja na left smiling today, the german dajana eitberger also taking to social media to share herjoy after taking the silver medal in the loose. and actually her team—mate was celebrating, natalie geisenberger took gold with a brilliant performance. she was leading going into the final run. and she kept her advantage throughout winning by more than three tenths of a second. she retained the title that she had won back in sochi. alex gough was third of the canadian. a fantastic day at pyeongchang with eight medals in all decided. more details on the bbc sport website. and also coming up in the programme.

help is at hand — it's a third successive t20 defeat for england — this time against new zealand. we'll have the latest on the ben stokes situation as he prepares to fly to new zealand for a first international appearing in overfour months. but first it's that time of the year that all football fans look forward to — the business end of the champions league. the opening matches of the knock out stage of match. they are tonight with two british clu bs they are tonight with two british clubs in action. manchester city starting at huge favourites against basel. but the big game for the english side is tottenham taking on juventus. john murray looks ahead to that. this tie is quite a prospect. both sides are very much in form. juventus almost all conquering at the moment. a superb defensive record. tottenham have played really
6:39 pm
well against some of the best sides in the premier league. tottenham a little bit naive at this level of foot ball little bit naive at this level of football to be honest. juventus have done it, they know how to handle a big occasion and that could go against tottenham tonight. they had never been in this situation before. hopefully they will not freeze but they have big players and they're full of confidence. but the totte n ha m full of confidence. but the tottenham manager mauricio pochettino was making this comparison between the relative sizes and achievements of the clubs in the build—up to the game. sizes and achievements of the clubs in the build-up to the game. think juventus is a massive club, a massive club. we can compare with juventus, juventus is winning everything in the last three seasons. and tottenham, we are a young team, and we are building a very nice project. how much does that actually matter, juventus have
6:40 pm
got the big—game experience in the champions league and they've played into the last three finals. totte n ha m into the last three finals. tottenham are quite a young team in comparison. how much does it matter better not it can go two ways, experience is a wonderful thing but sometimes expectations are high and you can get uptight.|j sometimes expectations are high and you can get uptight. i would like to see tottenham play as they have been in the past 34 weeks. you just hope they do not freeze. it isjuventus, they do not freeze. it isjuventus, the atmosphere will be electric. but asa the atmosphere will be electric. but as a footballer this is what you try to achieve the games you want to in. you've seen harry kane scoring for england, no reason why they cannot turn up tonight against juventus and have a go at them. make sure they do not give away silly goals. you do not give away silly goals. you do not want to be in a tight situation. for harry kane to play against the juventus defence is a challenge.”
6:41 pm
think as a player you look at juventus and as soon as you think about juve ntus you juventus and as soon as you think about juventus you think do not concede. i've seen them play a few times recently and they are solid at the back. they have clever players, they are an excellent side. to win this, i do not know if they're good enough but you can see why they always get nearly to the end. well chris says he helped tottenham do not freeze but with the alps just over there i hope we do not either! david, a huge game for spurs. they have been much great run of late, do you think they have anything to againstjuventus? you think they have anything to against juventus? nothing to fear, i think the manager will see to that but of course juventus have but of coursejuventus have to be massively respected. in view of their tremendous progress in recent weeks. if you look at their record
6:42 pm
it is quite daunting. if tottenham can geta it is quite daunting. if tottenham can get a goal i think it would be all on. the important thing is to keep momentum going. they're on a run, they have players that now, challenging for positions. toby alderweireld is back. and when you consider the centre half, toby alderweireld, out for 20 games. and they've continue to do quite and yet missing a player who i may suggest is one of the best players they have. how big would be for the club if spurs could go through to the quarterfinals for the first time?m would be very big especially with the stadium looming, the difficulty of attracting players and trying to keep the salary is sensible. the clu b keep the salary is sensible. the club do understand income expenditure which some clubs do not. so many factors and you just have to say of course it can be a very big

result for them to get the quarterfinals. thank you for coming manchester city are the runawat premier league leaders of course and with a 16 point gap there, the focus for them will be winning a first champions league title. captain vincent kompany and his teammates begin with a match at swiss side fc basel. who have won 4 of their last 5 home games against english clubs in the competition. i think that things have changed now. if there is a time and a moment where the club is ready to feel at home in the competition, then it is now. i'm not going to say it is a matter of time because some teams never win it. but if every year were able to go with the same confidence in this competition and if not this year, eventually we will get there. i'm sure of that. alistair bruce—ball will be watching this one for bbc radio 5 live. well it has not been a happy hunting

6:49 pm
during the hearing, the england all—rounder was asked to stand up behind a sheet of glass and asked how he would be pleading to a single charge of affray. he answered, "not guilty." two men charged alongside him — ryan hale and ryan ali, both in their 20s and from bristol — also charged with affray, they said they too would plead not guilty to the same charge. the men were told by the judge they would all three go to trial at bristol crown court with an initial hearing in the middle of next month, march 12th. however, just moments after ben stokes left, the england and wales cricket board issued a statement saying they had been told he would not have to attend that next hearing in person, he does not have to be in court in the middle of march, so tomorrow he will fly to new zealand tojoin his england team—mates. we are told initially it will be for training, there are no plans at the moment for him to play in the twenty20 tri—series, but the decision will be up to the england management. ben stokes himself left this court, made no comment to the press
