a 1000000 city assaults on drops. that would be an unbearable escalation, killing thousands, smart tvs, millions and forcing and the thousands, the fleet, the and the police and to police a crackdown and protesting demonstrated against georgia. so cool, fine influence. so the we begin in the united states, we university protests against, as well as one, gaza, a continuing students at campuses from the east to the west coast, a bound to state and cat until the moms of met earlier at the university of north carolina, chapel hill peoples took down the american flag and raised the palestinian, the fag on top of the building. police moved in to clear the encampment and can be seen using half a spray to dispose students at columbia university in new york. students occupying

hamilton who will have barricaded themselves inside the building. this is also the university's management set. it had begun suspending students refusing to meet a deadline to abandon their and confident thousands. a cooling for the academic institutions to cut ties with israel and urging an end to us military aid. we have correspondence covering the story at u. c. l. a in los angeles at the travis county jail and austin, and at columbia university in new york. from where we begin with today's a book and today's of people to, to process that just by the university suspending students from the university right across the world. paul is located. this is a building that were to pass on monday evening via google just

or they said that they are changing the name of it because of a 6 year old girl that was killed. apartment is ready. military guys are 3 main people that you're seeing right outside are many of them are the versity. they have comedy or they should remain inside. they're saying that they're not alone. and because they think of right now is essential, the students that are leaving inside remaining payment they are. but what you're seeing right now are the students that are side columbia university. they are saying that they're under speech, the university is trying to apply to the counselors. they don't know why that they're going to be a big kid. there are left so never will receive some of this other students are side and reaching out to them. the 3rd another so that they can remain

inside the campus of the university saying right now that those who remained inside the deadline on monday that day of the suspect in the hall. it's the building to be expelled inside off. but the people are saying that they'll remain here supporting the site for now, but they're not going anywhere until the who are expecting more people to come come to columbia to support those who are already there, especially inside that who behind you because the crowd is marching through new york city planning to end that much where you are most certainly we just so are the people just marketing where we, where they're going around with the whole university. i'm coming back to where we

are right now. there was some tension with that please. however, we were able to hear the police say to the fact that they do not want any type of confrontation. for now, let's not forget what happened here. on april 18 were over a 100 more detained. that was here in the space where we are recording. sorry there's people are because we were able to speak. is that the time the days for now trying to detain people here, which is the i've been seeing another university in other parts of the country. however, that was the press conference, the new york police department, where they said they had been employed created by out of this increases the danger and the space be for inside people here data, those are, excuse me, stuff. this protest has not been infiltrated. what they want right now is to shed
2:06 am
light to what is happening and goes out today. so thank you so much for that. today's of our joining us live from columbia university. new york is go to austin, texas. now heidi joe cars, acosta. is that correspondent the students being charged with trespassing, as is the case and all the universities, heidi, tell us about the charges on what's happening way. well, that's right, elizabeth. this is actually outside the travis county jail where 79 protesters were taken after police broke up and in cameron on the you t austin campus that's close by. and throughout this afternoon we've seen a trickle of those arrested protesters now be released from this jail. there's been a vigil held here that was overnight and they're still waiting. these are other students, faculty, community members, saying that they are going to wait here till the very last of those arrested
2:07 am
protesters is released. and someone who just walked out of that building is with me now. this is sam la, a graduate student at you t austin. tell me about how you were arrested in what your experience was like in the jail. yeah, i'm a jewish american and graduate student that you t austin and i, yesterday i went to, there was a, the faculty hosted a scholastic aside teaching. and so i went to hear about the faculty, talking about the destruction of universities and gaza. and around $1245.00, a group of people started setting up tense. and so i ran to where they were setting up 10 site linked arms of people to defend the tense. and we saw last wednesday, our president of the university sent in miller tries police people where it with long guns and riot gear and forces. and so when i ran to it, i knew that that's what was going to happen. but as a jewish american, as, as someone who's part of this community, i needed to be strong and say that, you know, this, this is, this cannot happen in my name when i hear stories from children and guys that who
2:08 am
have lost their parents, who the hospitals are, have collapsed, all the universities have been raised. um i knew i needed to do something and the i have a right to free speech on my campus. and so i was there. um. we were in circled. it took them several hours to pull people away. one by one of the but there was a strong sense of solidarity of resolve among the students and community members. i wasn't the only do they were people wearing keep us in and uh yeah, um, once we are arrested we were. busy were uh you know, taken to a big room on campus before they could transfer us to the jail and, and i would say that there is, but the thing that they try and do is they trying to find us, right. they try and divide americans from the people of palestine. they try and divide the students from the non students. they try and lock us up and separate us and all through this we have powerful solidarity step solid are the students with palestine. but once we were arrested, as my band was being moved,
2:09 am
we saw people linking arms and trying to stop the band being moved. and then once we were being held together in this university hallway, there was solid already among the rest of these we were singing songs. you know, we're americans. so maybe we don't know like really powerful movement songs from palestine. but we were singing, hey jude and songs by like the beatles smashed mouse. you know, whatever we knew to keep the spirits up. and then when someone ended up he, we were chant, let them p until the police force were forced to sort of let them p. um there were some people who are pretty badly injured. um i saw people who really couldn't walk because they injured their ankle. uh, someone covered in blood, people having asthma attacks, people having diabetic crises, we saw several people be mesa as well. um yeah, there were, there were people with like tears running down their face with maddox, putting sailing solution, their eyes help wash it out. but actually throughout the night, people's like, while we are just, once you're arrested, it's a long, bureaucratic slow process of way edings. and as we are waiting people's pepper
2:10 am
spray would get reactivated. and there's nothing really they could do other than uh, sort of lie there. and so, i mean that's so it's very hard for those students to sam after 24 hours later, you're back, you have your freedom. people were chanting all night here. let them go, let them go. you saw that swelling of community support when you were led away. how do you feel knowing that people are doing this for you and you're drawing more attention to this cause i think that it's really important that right now all the eyes of the world are on gods and the genocide that's ongoing there. and that everyone, wherever they are, can stand up and try and take action. and maybe the action doesn't mean getting arrested, but maybe it means coming out to a jail visual. maybe it means dropping off food with students. maybe it means asking your local religious organizations all different ways that i this is another person be released now from the jail. and you, this is, this is what we hear every single time a. another person is released,
2:11 am
the drums kick in the people slab. they come out some of the fellow protesters shields in because some come out not wanting immediately, all the the media attention of them. so they're asked whether or not they want to be filmed to be for those protective umbrellas and blankets are dropped at sam, thank you. so much for your time and for talking out 0. so again, this is sam who is just released from the travis county jail, one of the where the 70 protesters mostly students, were arrested on the you t austin campus on monday. hardy. thank you so much for bringing us a picture from the hydro castro and live in austin, texas. about corresponding to the university of california in los angeles as rentals involved there was tension skirmishes between baba protests. there were a few days ago. but it sounds like things are peaceful now a yes, elizabeth of your right. and i think that that shows that there is another way to
2:12 am
deal with protests and preserved students the ability to express themselves and yet allow the campus to function. unlike in the case of o austin were heidi was reporting from or other a college campuses, police have not stormed the encampment, which you can see behind me of the there have been no arrest. no students have been aghast or pepper sprayed or, or beaten. and in fact uh the only real disruptions and tense moments came when counter protestors pro israel. pro sign is counter protestors who come primarily from off campus in the larger los angeles community have come here to use e away. and in some cases, attempted to breach the barrier surrounding the protest camp. so let's get some
2:13 am
perspective on this from one of the members of the u. c. l. a community i'm joined now by professor robin kelly, who is a professor of american contemporary 20th century american history. and as such, professor kelly as a history professor is history being made here and across the united states right now? well absolutely, i mean i've been a part of the anti apartheid moving and 19 eighties. and i've never seen anything like this just in terms of the mobilization of students that commitment to do with a real emergency or a genocide and gaza and the discipline that they've got to get. i mean, it's really an amazing site. it's unlike anything nape also under much more direct and we were in the 1980s back in the 1980s. the anti apartheid in south africa movement did result in changing some public opinion and changing some political policies in this country. do you think the same thing is possible now?
2:14 am
it has to be possible, otherwise people will die. but it's far more difficult because there wasn't a huge south african lobby pushing us policy. there wasn't a bunch of south africans storming on campus fighting us as kind of as protesters. and also to ask is really big. i mean, universities, all these institutions have had investments in israel and the occupied territories for many years. us foreign policy hasn't shifted. so what they're demanding is huge . they're making a huge, huge claim, both on the universities and on the united states as well. you mentioned the counter protestors who have created some tense moments here. what, what, what more can you tell us about that, from your experience and what you for? sure. um, uh, over the weekend there was something like 800, maybe a 1000 counter protesters. and they came with very, you know,
2:15 am
file language violence. they, they breached the, the security divides barricades, and on top of that, you know, at night they were amazing. students is always trying to think that we're breaking into their encampment. so it's been violent. but what i'm but they mazing thing is how discipline and non violent far students had been in our faculty. they held the barricades, they held on the escalated every time. and that's the only reason why the l a. p d didn't didn't come in. yeah, it really was lined up on sunday, but because they were able to de escalate, but they weren't necessary yet. so i is given that this is going on all over the country and given that this is a focus of media and popular tension now, and politicians denouncing the student system sort of agent,
2:16 am
provocative tours in 3rd, 5th columnists and so on. but the students that i've talked to said that they're not the store. right, right. right. so what the express that to us, the story is $34000.00 people killed. the story is 70 plus 1000 people injured. the story is the occupation of guys that in the west bank and the violence has been going on. and the story is it, us, uh, financial support makes this happen. in addition to the kind of investments that universities have in weapons, manufacturers and other companies that do business with this real um, the other thing that i think is really important is that in this slide, so thankful for alex vera, the reporting has been terrible. you would get the impression that there's nothing but anti semites, roaming around here, brittany says you violence. but in fact, if you look at the cam, it's peaceful. it's a lot of learning taking place, study thoughtful discussion debate,
2:17 am
and also trying to convince the university to do the right thing to take a moral stance. as opposed to thinking about this is pocketbooks. has the learning and education of the students who are not in active protest mode at the moment. has that been completely disrupted? nobody's able to get the class. nobody can take a test, nobody can do their homework. that is not true. people are taking, taking go into class, they're doing a mid terms. i teach class and they, they go to my classroom and then they come out here to participate. but more importantly, this encampment in this struggle is education. this is the best education. they can never get in terms of understanding the u. s. foreign policy investments, divestment up essicks morals. just basic philosophy of what is the difference between vide involved, um, even understanding the, the, the level of violence. you're all learning, you know,
2:18 am
all learning how to be non violent in trying to learn how to change this world. and that's what, that's our job to help them understand that very good points. thank you, professor kelly. i appreciate that very much. that was professor robin kelly. who teaches history here on a campus where history is being made and it's renee into elizabeth and get his insights around. thank you so much. well, reynolds joining us live from u. c. l. a in los angeles to the head on knowledge of 0. we've was, is it makes shift comp and kenya, southern has a 180000 people from the the as hello that we've seen some very strong and destructive tornadoes across parts of

the us over the past few days. and as we look at the weather across north america, in the days ahead, we all likely to see more of those. we've got some storms developing across the midwest. and also in the deep south, we need some very heavy rain, strong winds, and some hail as well, with the potential for further tornadoes know ahead of that across the east coast. we think lots of sunshine with above average temperatures for the likes of washington d. c. we'll see that where's the weather start to creep it's way further east, across eastern parts of canada and some very nasty storms to come across. central pots of the us is quiet. so behind that still wintery mix working across the northern plains is event development of wintery weather for central parts of canada, as well as oregon. but for the south of that full california, lots of sunshine and quiet conditions. and those continue a cool central america and the caribbean, full the likes of mexico will see temperatures pick up not only in the north,
