uniting across borders to speed up the development of tests, treatments, and of vaccine keeping you up to date with what's happening on the ground in the world and in the lab. now, more than ever, the world needs w h l, making a healthier world for you. everywhere ah, the world's richest man, ellen musk reaches a deal to buy twitter and he's promising absolute free speech. ah, i'm so robin watching over there like my headquarters here in denver. also coming up. russia hits rail lines of fuel depos, attempting to hinder ukrainian supplies from reaching the eastern front blinds.
2:01 am
ah, ah, cried from human rights groups after turkish activist osmond caballo is sentenced to life in prison. and to pilot attempt to create aviation history by swapping planes, mid air, when we'll look at how well it went. ah welcome to the pagan twitches board has unanimously decided to sell the company to ellen musk in a deal worth around $44000000000.00. that if the deal goes through, shareholders will be paid more than $54.00 per share. the share price rose almost 6 percent on news of the deal, but questions remain as to how the billionaire will reform the social media giant. the company's chief executive, toll staff, the future direction of the platform isn't clear at this stage. almost completed.
2:02 am
yes, in a response to the sale, an attachment to the tweet said he wants to unlock twitches, extraordinary potential, a, make it a platform for free speech around the world. public opinion has been split towns to whether mosques, takeover is a good idea. i just don't think it would be good if you like control and just because a lot of money doesn't get all of our capitalism. this is america. and i'll be frankly honest, which i wish the best of luck. i think he'll turn it for better. giving people more freedom of speech, maybe bringing my man trump back the twitter. i think that would be nice. i like to hear what he has to say. i don't think that the one person to that full control at the platform. i think the people who have their own voice to be able to see how they feel. well, let's take a look what led to this deal between the richest man in the world and his social networking giant, ill must became twitter larger shareholder in early april. when he increased his stake in the company to 9.2 percent,
2:03 am
10 days later he offered to buy the entire company in any $44000000000.00 at a price of $54.20 per share. at the time he said he changed twitter from a public to a private business. well, with his board of directors adopted them and even known as a poison pill, following the hostile takeover that was aimed at essentially preventing musk from accumulating more of its stalk. the 50 year old 1000000000 updated his proposal last week, outlining how he could finance the cash purchase through loans. well gabriel alexanders following this rather interesting story from new york gabriel from an offer to a done deal. i mean, a lot has changed in 10 days for shareholders and for the board to sell. what did it well, essentially, even mosque came up with the financing. that's what happened. i mean, it was 10 days ago. he made an all cash offer of $44000000000.00
2:04 am
a to buy twitter. most people on wall street did not take that too seriously. and this is why, because even for a long musk who's worth more than 4 times that $44000000000.00, it would have been nearly impossible for him simply to write a check for $44000000000.00. and people on wall street knew that not impossible, but quite difficult what he needed was financing. and in the last week or so, he has been quietly behind the scenes working with morgan stanley, the big bank to gather that financing. and he finally did it. i gathered several banks, lead by morgan stanley that are kicking in about $25000000000.00 of financing in various different forms of loans and other sort of financing won't get into all the details. and then about $21000000000.00 that must himself is kicking in in equity financing. bottom line here is that once musk people went to twitter and came to
2:05 am
them with this, the more details of this offer that's when reportedly the twitter board sat down on sunday late into the night sunday night into monday morning with musk officials and basically agreed to this deal because they knew there was the money there. the big question now is what happens with twitter? what happens with the user experience for twitter? what kind of changes does must wanna make to it. but then also big picture with free speech as you lead to. lot of people worried about this social media platform with more than 200000000 users around the world. will it necessarily be better run by simply one man and his version of free speech? and that's really the questions moving forward now. after really shocking sales you correctly mentioned went from being an offer to being a done deal. one that many people did not think would get done. and just 10 days later, now you want must got what he want it, not only to be a twitter user and
2:06 am
a super user with over 80000000 followers, but now simply own twitter outright. gabriel, thanks to the over the let's get into this a little bit more with a freed. she's chief technology correspondent at the u. s. news website axioms choice now via skype from san francisco. nice to have you. back on the program, miss fried gabriel has given us a great overview of what's going on. certainly behind closed doors when the board room at the end of the day, it's about you, me and millions of people across the world use twitter. is this a good idea? is this a good or bad thing for 20 users? why i think there's 2 things to realize. one is we really don't know. so ellen musk himself is pretty unpredictable and it's hard to know what the combination of elan plus this big company will actually produce. so i'd say to all the people who are either cheering or hanging their heads, that we don't really know. but i do think it's important to say who's excited about
2:07 am
this and who's worried about it. the people who are excited tend to be folks on the right in particular in the u. s. so josh holly and, and marcia blackburn to a very conservative republicans, both cheering the news. i think some of the people that are worried are under represented voices that are worried about seeing the protections that twitter has offered, which themselves haven't been perfect, rolled back. so i think people representing groups that deal with women, people of color l g b, t q issues, voices that tend to be harassed and subject to harassment more. and i'm going to say that goes beyond us borders, to minority voices everywhere. i think there's a great deal of concern that free speech could actually be opening the door to a lot of harassment in terms of then free speech. i mean, how soon do you think we could see these changes in terms of a timeline from what we're hearing now from elam musk of the board of twitter?
2:08 am
so i don't think things will change immediately in part. this deal won't close until later this year. and i also don't think it's gonna come in the form of giant dictates, in general, even though ellen has laid out this big free speech thing, it turns out to be really hard to remove protections, even some of the organizations and social media that have tried to rival twitter and say were in favor of free speech, find that free speech without rules is just chaos. so i think a lot of the rules will stay. i think that will probably see things start to shift more subtly though both as elan has influence. but also i think people who strongly oppose that will start to leave twitter. other people will come in, who are more in favor of it. so i expect a subtle shift as starting when the deal closes as suddenly we might shift happen in the us 1st. but you alluded to the fact that protections are not just about protections created in the us. but there are national sovereign governments around
2:09 am
the world that all have their own legislation around social media. a quite a you might say mine feel to navigate full a new bold uncertainty for ela, musk when he has to deal with the e. u. china, india, australia. the list goes on and he has said that he's gonna follow the law. obviously twitter has to, in the countries that operate. so certainly twitter isn't going to do anything that's against the law as they say, and just understanding and complying with those. as you point out is difficult, i think the real question comes in protections above and beyond what the law requires on. but what it requires, what it takes to have a decent conversation, tends to be protections that go above and beyond what the law might dictate in a fleet. always good to have your insights on these sorts of topics. thanks for joining us from the us. happy to do it. for me, as president donald trump has been held in contempt for failing to turn over
